Adelaide Uiversity student who studies Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor Teaching student offering Chinese lessons to both native and non-native Chinese speakers Chinese classes.

Methodology

This is Jimmy who offers Chinese lessons to students from Year 1-Year 12. I would split my classes into several components: phonetics, characters, sentences, meaning and Chinese culture; while the last one can be penetrated throughout the process of other components. Interest is extremely important for non-native Chinese speakers and that my job is trying to maintain their interest by introducing the charisma of Chinese characters and language, and most significantly, how interesting the colloquialism is in Chinese society. For native Chinese, I would more likely to teach them reading Chinese literature and further trainings include evaluative, persuasive, imaginative writing as well as analytical interpretation of Chinese literature.

My Teaching Philosophy:
When I teach languages (English/Chinese), I prefer to make theoretical concepts and skills become specific and practical. For example, when I teach oral presentation, I persuade the students that the purpose of doing presentations is not simply attempting to pass exam; yet in real life, “clear voice and confident eye contact when talking/arguing with others can make you powerful”. When I teach language analysis in VCE curriculum, I tell them the importance of interpreting author’s purpose and possible response from audience by suggesting how crucial it is to achieve “transpositional consideration” when writing, for which this skill is obtained through the training of emotional intelligence. I believe that teaching is not just talking about all details in textbooks repetitively, rather it is a process to make students realise everything they have learnt can be applied to their real life.

All About My Tutoring & Teaching
【My Tutoring & Teaching Traits】
I enjoy the process of teaching as the wonder of languages and its applications attract me so much. I am very adept at making complex theories simple as understandability is my principle of tutoring. In addition, motivated by my Teaching Degree, I am even active to pursue the perfect teaching outcome as I always ask my students if they need further help as well as the level of my teaching. In terms of homework feedback, I am usually objective when assessing students’ work even though everyone expects a high grade.

【My Teaching Tutoring & Philosophy】
When I teach languages (English/Chinese), I prefer to make theoretical concepts and skills become specific and practical. For example, when I teach oral presentation, I persuade the students that the purpose of doing presentations is not simply attempting to pass exam; yet in real life, “clear voice and confident eye contact when talking/arguing with others can make you powerful”. 【Things That I believe Are Significant During Tutoring/Teaching】
For me, the most significant qualities in terms of teaching can be patience, resilience and willingness to sacrifice.
(1)Value of patience: Being a tutor/teacher means I have to face a range of students whose level of study and level of understanding completely vary. On this point, only if I become patient, my students will not be reluctant to accept me.
(2)Value of resilience: Teaching is very flexible as I should be active to explore their strengths and weaknesses in order to gain an insight about how to keep their interest, ultimately, developing their great points and fill up their shortcomings.
(3) Value of willingness to sacrifice: Learning is a long process that sometimes in order to further help my students, I have to overwork and can be under overwhelming pressure. An ordinary teacher doesn’t have to work over normal working period, whereas an excellent teacher should be willing to sacrifice his/her leisure time.
