Methodology

This is Jimmy who attempts to teach maths students from Year 1-Year 12. Maths is a subject for which it requires large pratices. Each lesson I intend to focus on homework difficulties and fallible questions I discovered prior to introducing any new concepts each session.

My Teaching Philosophy:
When I teach languages (English/Chinese), I prefer to make theoretical concepts and skills become specific and practical. For example, when I teach oral presentation, I persuade the students that the purpose of doing presentations is not simply attempting to pass exam; yet in real life, “clear voice and confident eye contact when talking/arguing with others can make you powerful”. When I teach language analysis in VCE curriculum, I tell them the importance of interpreting author’s purpose and possible response from audience by suggesting how crucial it is to achieve “transpositional consideration” when writing, for which this skill is obtained through the training of emotional intelligence. I believe that teaching is not just talking about all details in textbooks repetitively, rather it is a process to make students realise everything they have learnt can be applied to their real life.

Background

I had worked as a tutor in Jerry school (a training institution in Beijing) and mainly helped Year 7 (middle school) students with their written and oral abilities in English subject during 5 months working period in 2018. Assisting teachers to discipline the class, giving feedback to students’ assignments as well as communicating to parents in terms of individual’s difficulties were major parts of my job. I also had previous informal tutoring experience to my friends and ultimately witnessed significant improvement on their School Assessed Coursework.

In Adelaide, I have personally tutored 3 students so far. All these 3 students have completely different personalities, habits on their learning and different levels of foundation. I am now proud to see that though I met a great deal of obstacles and difficulties, I used my passion to activate their determination to be the best they could be. For the first student she was in university and I tutored her Chinese (second language), surprisingly she received 97% as the final grade of her course. For the second (high school) and third (university) students, I mainly helped them on English (second language) subject and both of them formed a deeper basis of understanding on this language and generally copied well in exams. Additionally, due to the fact that I am currently studying Teaching in university, I also completed my first year school placement——for this component of my degree I mainly observed the teaching strategies of the teacher and classroom management approaches.

Reflecting upon all my experiences, no matter in Beijing or in Adelaide, I have appreciated whom I have met and hardships I have encountered. My students appraised me as a “knowledgeable teacher” and the one has “passion and love to pass on what he knows”. For sure, I am confident that my past experiences and deep understanding of my specialized subjects are my advantages. As far as I am concerned, if I tutor a new student, it can be more effective to help him/her succeed if I get to know his/her academic progress and level and identify any areas yet to be primarily improved before we start our first tutoring session. After experiencing the journeys of past tutoring, I have also realized how crucial it is to activate the prior knowledge of a student in order to construct high-order understanding. In addition, tutoring is sometimes more than mechanically infusing knowledge and skills, it actually involves strong two-way communication and perceptual development of having interest in a subject. Therefore, caring about students themselves should be prioritized instead of making them become the robot of learning tools. Tutoring can be more brilliant if I actively connect a better relationship network between me and my students in order to let my students emotionally embrace me as a tutor before coming to understand any subject matter.
