I would begin tutorials by asking if there are any specific questions or problems that the student has from previous tutorial or school content. I like to encourage the student to direct the structure and content of tutorials as I believe that each student has different needs. I will try to accommodate the structure and content of the lesson to the interests and liking of the individual student.
For teaching English (as a second language), I would encourage students to speak as much as possible. I will build their confidence in speaking English and be non-judgemental when they make mistakes. I will bring students' attention to their grammatical/syntactical and pronunciation mistakes without diminishing their confidence. I'll be very careful as to approaching their mistakes and correcting them whilst allowing the room to make them.
I am a student at ANU studying Music and Maths. I've marked primary level schoolwork and worked as an assistant at private tutoring centres. I am confident in tutoring high school level maths, chemistry, music, english as a second language. I speak Cantonese, Mandarin, and English.
- Teaching assistant at private tutoring centre (marking student work and filing documents)
- private tutoring and homework assistant
- I've also volunteered as an oral translator (Mandarin to English) for an international year 1 student. Her grasp of English vocabulary was very little if any at all in the beginning. I translated all her thoughts and questions to the teacher and vice versa.
