Blender and Maya artist gives lessons in fully creating 3D digital assets to prospective students.

Methodology

My approach to teaching and lesson planning is customisation. Every lesson is tailored to the individual student or group, whatever their current skill level and experience is in Blender 2.8+, Autodesk Maya, and/or Unity. From no prior knowledge to advanced but in need of refreshing, the structure of every lesson will be from the ground up, configured by the students' needs.
My teaching philosophy is patience and prudence in all things, that no one is a failure for not understanding something, and that help is to be always given when asked for.

One of our best tutors! High-quality profile, qualified and response guaranteed. Joshua will plan your first lesson with care.

Background

I graduated from JMC Academy a year ago, with a Bachelor of Creative Arts in Game Design and have spent the last three or so years mastering the entire production pipeline (modelling, sculpting, grooming, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, animation, VFX, lighting, rendering, compositing, and programming) in Maya and Unity for not only myself, but to volunteer in assisting my fellow classmates and other undergraduates along the way. Solving problems and troubleshooting became something I did for anyone and everyone who needed help, and teaching while doing so simply came naturally thereon. Over the past six months or so, I've also been deep diving into Blender 2.8 and up, in order to thoroughly acquaint myself with its rather extensive pipeline.

Perfect! Joshua is kind and helpful

Joshua's response

Joe's two boys are attentive, eager, and quick learners. They'll both go far with Blender.

S
Sienna

Perfect! Needed someone to get me up to speed with the changes between Blender 2.79 and 2.8.

Joshua is always on time and knows his stuff! Only took me a few sessions to find my feet and I learnt a whole bunch of Blender quality of life tips along the way.

A+ would recommend!

Joshua's response

Sienna both learns and works incredibly fast. Within just a few lessons over a week, she had several well sculpted characters in place, including one remarkably detailed demon/monster. Sienna has all the makings of a diligent and talented 3D artist.

Simplethingssaid

Perfect! Josh really cares about how students learn and passionate about 3D animation! I really appreciate his patience.

Joshua's response

Tim is clearly a dedicated 2D artist who wants to expand his horizons into 3D, which, with a little personal discipline, he is more than capable of doing. Good things await him.

P
Peter

Perfect! Really thorough tutor and easy to get along with. Knows his stuff quite well too. He was super keen to help with my project for uni. Looking forward to more lessons with him!

Joshua's response

Dedicated, organised, and thoroughly prepared, Peter has every single hallmark of being not only an excellent student, but exceptional 3D artist.

J
Justin

Perfect! Great Tutor and expert 3D artist. Very professional, incredibly insightful and versatile. Highly recommend.

Joshua's response

Justin is diligent, dedicated, and keen to learn. He does not shy away from adversity and commits to the task he sets himself with absolute determination. He is going to go far.

M
Michael

Perfect! Joshua, saved my life. he's a very nice person always willing to help and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend if you need help.

Joshua's response

Michael learns at extraordinary speed, pushing himself harder to master Maya's idiosyncrasies faster than anyone I've ever seen. My only real advice is patience. Maya can be, and often is, a frustrating program, but Rome also wasn't built in a day.

Anjy

Perfect! So far so good. Very friendly and he ensures i understand what i am doing.
I will leave a further feedback on completion of the assignment

Joshua's response

Plenty of potential here, is just a matter of building confidence in herself and her abilities and practising with the tools over and over.

M
Maria

Perfect! Joshua has been such a great help! I'd been struggling with Maya at uni and was about to throw the towel in! Thanks goodness for Joshua! He has helped me get to grips with all the basics and I am now much more confident and definitely not afraid of Maya anymore. If you are having trouble with Maya, don't give up - get in touch with Joshua! He'll show you how to solve problems and teach you some really handy shortcuts! Thank you!

Joshua's response

A quick study and keen to learn, Maria is an enthusiastic and determined student who has a bright future in animation ahead of her.

M
MATTHEW

Perfect! Very deep knowledge of the software. Always has an answer and an experience for everything. Feels like I can learn anything from him.

Joshua's response

Excellent foundational knowledge with the propensity to go far, providing maintained consistency in ambition.

I've studied and worked with Josh in the past. Joshua is well versed with rigging and modelling.

He also has a very strong work ethic. No matter how hard the task is, he's willing to get things done.

The work that he produces is of a high standard, and I endorse others to learn from him.

I studied with Josh in university and throughout he has been a great help to me and other classmates with 3d modelling, rigging, animating. I've worked with him on only one project but the rigging and animated were spot on and professional. I think he would be a great teacher cause he loves helping people solve problems and showing them new and interesting ways todo things

As a lecturer myself I can confidently say Josh has the knowledge to help you with any 3D lesson.
He is a great all rounder and has a fantastic work ethic.
Josh strives to problem solve and has always been able to find his way around a problem, as demonstrated in classes where he was always there to lend a hand to fellow students.

Josh is a super friendly, energetic guy and his teaching style is a positive hands on approach.

If you are looking for someone who knows his stuff and is there to help you, Josh is your guy.

He seems to always know either how to fix a problem or what to look for to fix the problem, which when it comes to programs like Maya is very useful, such as when our groups director's Maya project crushed after hours worth of animation was spent on it and he managed to get us the file back with in afew minutes (this happened afew times) as well as knowing how to get the outcome you want in a faster and easier method most evident when it comes to modelling. Best of all if he doesn't know what you do you can bet he'll keep trying at it untill he gets is right! You can trust Josh!

Joshua is an excellent, patient, understanding and knowledgeable teacher. Whatever problem I have faced he has always been able to find a solution and recommend alternative methods if need be. Joshua’s knowledge of maya exceeds the knowledge of any average 3D modeller in the industry. He is open to questions and always speaks in a clear manner that is easy to understand. He is an inspirational teacher that is passionate about his industry and wants to help the next generation find their feet with a program that otherwise can be easy to get lost in. I would highly recommend him as a teacher as you would be more than equipped for the industry with Joshua as your teacher.

Interview with Joshua

QUESTION 01 | 09
When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
Joshua — I moved down to Melbourne a couple of years ago, but couldn’t really decide on what I wanted to do for the first few months, until my mother spotted an ad for Game Design at JMC Academy on the side of a tram one day. She told me about it later and said, “you’ve done nothing but play video games since you got down here – go make them.” So I enrolled, discovered that I loved it, had a knack for it that allowed me to learn the principles unusually fast, and realised that I enjoyed teaching others how to do things just as much. Tutoring, once I graduated, seemed the next logical step.
QUESTION 02 | 09
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
Joshua — The listing on Superprof is technically for 3D modeling, but I’ve specified in the lesson description that I cover all areas of the production pipeline, starting from modeling in Maya and ending at game programming in Unity. It would be more accurate to say I tutor in 3D asset creation and implementation, from crafting the initial digital mesh, to unwrapping the faces for texture painting, to rigging the mesh with a skeleton and controllers, to animating it, to adding VFX, to lighting and rendering the scene, to add to some basic C# code for programming gameplay. The topics I go through with students, depending on their current needs, revolve around keeping each of these stages in mind when creating their own 3D assets, as each stage is reliant on the last for optimal structuring and workflow.
QUESTION 03 | 09
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Joshua — All of my lecturers at JMC were invaluable one way or another during my time there and often afterward too, but one that especially stands out to me is Ms. Pinilla. There was not one single question that I asked her about any subject at any point that she could not answer. The wealth and depth of experience and knowledge found there was just surreal and beyond invaluable.
QUESTION 04 | 09
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Joshua — Patience, prudence, diligence, compassion, communicativeness, and expertise.
QUESTION 05 | 09
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
Joshua — Our course instructors told us right from the start that while coasting by on about twelve hours a week for the duration was certainly possible, it ultimately just wasted everyone’s time, especially ours. True to form, the ones that ended up succeeding the most and pretty much walking straight out into the industry upon graduation were the ones who put around sixty hours a week, every week, into the course. Into learning as much as they could whilst there.
QUESTION 06 | 09
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?
Joshua — The immediacy of the industry, in how quickly it changes and updates over time. Computer science in general is the fastest growing industry in the world, and knowledge is very quickly made obsolete by new technology. Not to mention the depth and breadth of the industry itself already. And while all computer systems are purely logic based, the premises of that logic according to each program and interface written is very much subject to human arbitrariness.
QUESTION 07 | 09
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?
Joshua — I’m a dedicated 3D generalist. Understanding the pipeline in full is something of a rarity, as most usually pick an aspect and stick to it religiously, so being able to tutor any aspect of it allows me to explain what students need to know in both a wider and narrower context overall.
QUESTION 08 | 09
Tell us what your discipline can bring to people's lives.
Joshua — Games are art. Anyone that says different has no actual appreciation for artistry. The quality of that art is certainly subjective and variable, but its worth as a cultural hallmark is without question. Now, what art as a whole brings to people’s lives is a whole other discussion.
QUESTION 09 | 09
What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?
Joshua — Aim slightly higher than your current skillset. Don’t set out to accomplish something way beyond your means that will almost certainly take the rest of your life, if you ever finish at all, because it won’t happen. Big dreams are nice, for when you’re asleep. But realistic ones get finished. Be honest about what you can do, then aim slightly higher than that. 3D is a marathon, not a sprint.
