There are so many benefits to learning biology. Described as the 'science of life', biology is a natural science that studies life and all living things. What could be more engrossing? Studying biology can also offer you access to a wide range of fascinating careers.

If you would like to study biology at a high level, you must first obtain your Certification of Education (or Higher School Certificate for those in NSW) with a good ATAR score in science subjects. Or, if you’ve chosen to study the International Baccalaureate, a good IB score. Discover how biology tutors can assist you with this here.

Then you can expand your knowledge and skillset by undertaking tertiary education.

When You Should Consider Extra Tuition

People tend to assume that academic tutoring is only for students who are struggling with their education. But even students who find subjects like biology easy might still want supplemental instruction.

Students may seek supplementary academic support to improve their comprehension of concepts, help them obtain a higher grade than they might have otherwise, and maintain these grades. Academic achievement means you can then pursue your dream career.

Unfortunately, the reality is that these days a good education usually requires money. Private schools usually have entry tests or exams to make sure their students are academically gifted enough to attend the school.

But the fact these schools achieve top results every year demonstrates that a private education does often result in students obtaining better qualifications than those at public schools or state schools (though of course this is not always the case).

As a result, many parents desire school tutoring for their children, to make sure that they are accepted into, or offered a scholarship for, a highly rated private school and achieve academic success. Tuition will help students get into university and obtain the degree required to have a good career.

Tutors are becoming more commonplace as they provide individualised support. Whether its calculus, algebra, or trigonometry, tutors focus on the student’s individual needs, their strengths and weaknesses, and are able to fill any gaps that classroom teachers are unable to address.

A tutor might provide homework help, assist students with assignments if they need help, improve their study skills and assist with test preparation and test-taking.

When we think of tutoring we tend to think of private tutoring and home tutoring. And while tutoring is usually one-on-one and face-to-face, with the advancement of technology there is also online tutoring, and you can also get tutors who work with small groups of pupils. Private tutors may be more expensive than group tutors, and home tutors may be more expensive than online tutors.

Before you start looking for a tutor, you need to decide what learning environment is best for you. Would you prefer a private tutor who can provide one-on-one tutoring or do you think you would benefit from small group tutoring?

Online tutoring services have become more popular due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. An online tutor might also be a good idea for pupils who live in regional or remote areas, where tutoring services may be limited.

And even when you reach university, tuition doesn’t have to stop there. In addition to high school tutors, you can also get a university tutor. There’s nothing to be ashamed about if you need extra tutoring, you’re never too old to enhance your academic skills!

What To Avoid When Looking For A Tutor

Firstly, your classmate, friend, or sibling with their ATAR is not advanced or qualified enough to be a tutor. They will not have the required knowledge of the subject being taught.

Secondly, someone who has no idea about your course structure and assessment is not going to be very helpful to you. They won’t know what to teach you in order for you to get the grades you need.

Thirdly, someone with no proven teaching experience is also a risk. They won’t know how to teach you concepts and ensure you understand.

Some tutors may only be in it for the money. Try to avoid tutors who are monotonous or seem bored. This will not help you learn.

And finally, don’t choose a tutor based on their gender, age, or appearance. Your tutor is there to teach you, not to be your friend!

What To Look For In A Biology Tutor

The best tutors have tertiary education in the field that you need help with. They have knowledge of the subject and are familiar with the syllabus being taught. This ensures they can teach you concepts that will improve your academic performance.

Many tutors are often past or existing educators with experience in tutoring. You should look for someone who has proven teaching experience. You could use someone who has been personally recommended to you, or find someone with excellent testimonials or reviews.

Try to find someone who is passionate about teaching. Tutoring can also be a form of mentoring, so it’s important to find someone who motivates you to be a better student.

Professional tutors typically become licensed and join tutoring companies or agencies where it's easier to be placed with students. By going through a company or agency, all parties can be assured that relevant checks have been made in relation to the individual’s background, qualifications, and training (including a current Working With Children Check).

Tutors can be any gender, young or old, experienced or recently-qualified, but for tutoring to be successful, you should look for someone that you believe you can work well with. Getting along with your private tutor will make your after school tutoring lessons more enjoyable but you don’t have to be best friends.

Don’t judge a book by its cover, think about what you could learn from this person and if they are a suitable match for your individual tutoring needs. You might consider interviewing candidates, accompanied by a parent or guardian, so you can see if they are an appropriate choice.

Where Can You Find A Biology Tutor?

You could ask your science school teacher to find out if they know any biology tutors, or your peers and their parents. If you’re at university, you could consult student services. Getting a personal recommendation by word of mouth is the best way to start.

You could ask someone you know to be your personal tutor, but do ensure they are suitably qualified. An unqualified and unmotivated person could cost you both your time, money and grades!

If you’re unable get a personal recommendation, and you decide to use the Internet to find a biology tutor, ensure that you only browse genuine websites with people who have the required skills.

Superprof boasts a long list of qualified science tutors covering a wide variety of subjects, including Biology and its different subcategories (for example, Marine Biology, Zoology, Ecology).

A Recap: 5 Pieces of Advice For Finding A Biology Tutor

1. Don’t forget that you don’t have to be failing in biology to make use of a tutor. Tutors are trained to be capable of teaching both the basic principles of biology, and the harder concepts. A tutor can prevent you from failing biology, but they can also ensure student success.

Biology tutors are especially useful if you are studying the science for your ATAR and want to ensure that you achieve a high score in order to secure your first choice of university and course.

2. Do not pay a friend, classmate or sibling, to provide tutoring, unless they are a fully-qualified teacher. Tutors usually help you with one or two subjects, so you should make sure they are appropriately qualified in these fields. It sounds obvious but if you need help with chemistry, find a chemistry tutor, if you need help with physics, find a physics tutor.

3. Don’t judge a tutor by their gender, age or appearance – and don’t forget that they are supposed to be your teacher and you the learner. Research as much as you can about the individual, including their background, interests and qualifications, to see if they would be an appropriate fit for you. The best way to do this is via interviews, and most professional tutors will be accustomed to attending meetings like these.

4. Try and obtain a personal recommendation, as if they’ve succeeded with someone you know then it’s more likely you will achieve success too.

5. Do try a tutoring agency when hiring a science tutor. An agency assures you that the tutor has the appropriate credentials and has undergone checks to make sure they can work with students of your age.

If you need help with how to study biology, don’t hesitate to get tutoring!
