You will find all the answers to any questions regarding learning English in Perth in this edition of the Superprof blog.
Perth is a fine city when it comes to education.
It boasts some of the best universities in the world, as well as a highly regarded public education school system.
Students in schools study a variety of subjects including the core subjects like English and mathematics, and also sciences (biology, chemistry, physics), history, literature, and physical education to name a few. As English is not a subject that everyone finds easy, sometimes we need a bit of extra help.
Let's take a look at your options for finding tutors, classes and resources to take your English skills to the next level.
At Primary and Secondary Level
English is regarded all around the country as perhaps the most important subject alongside maths.
There is a strong English program in Australia, naturally, as it is our official language! In Perth, it is no exception.
The state curriculum dictates that maths and English must be taught throughout all of primary school and secondary school to children and teens.
This even includes WACE, the Western Australian Certificate of Education, where you must achieve a C grade or higher in English.
To meet the breadth and depth requirements, students must study at least 20 units, including 10 units of Year 12 courses; four units of English at a post-Year 10 level (i.e. across years 11 and 12), including a pair of units at Year 12 level; and a pair of Year 12 units from both List A, which consists of humanities subjects and List B, made up of STEM subjects. - Government of Western Australia
In primary school, English is taught to children from Prep to Grade 6. Children start learning the alphabet, basic reading and handwriting skills and by the end of grade 6 students can read short novels and write book reviews and short essays.
Of course, it doesn't matter at which point your child runs into some hurdles, help will always be available.
In Perth, you have many options to aid your child in English, to give them that extra help outside their classroom.
If your child is having difficulty in the early stages of learning English, such as reading and writing, consider enrolling them into an extra-curricular school.
- Ace Tutoring - Located in West Perth. Ace Tutoring has both small group sessions (three to six students) and also individual tutoring. Unlike others, they are not lecture-based. Their groups are run by experienced, dynamic tutors whose students commonly increase their initial marks by 20 – 40%. They work on what you are doing in class first, assisting you to prepare for upcoming tests and essays.
- My Academy - Located in Claremont. My Academy offers weekly small group tuition for Primary students. The groups are limited to no more than 8 students enabling the qualified teacher to give each student individual attention and differentiate to suit each students abilities. The group tutoring covers both maths and English as well as specialist GATE groups.
- Progressive Home Tutors - Located in Murdoch. They are a company specialised in delivering quality teachers to your doorstep. Yes, that's right, you can have the tutor come to your home to teach your child! Handy! A whole afternoon of writing texts, reciting poems, or reading stories can get a little dull for young learners. To make English studies more fun, and to foster creativity, they encourage interaction and conduct small activities during study sessions.
In high school, the amount of work increases across all subjects and across years as students are working towards their ATAR exams, with English being no exception.
It is important that you or your child stay up to date with class and don't risk falling behind, as it becomes demotivating very quickly to not achieve good results.
If you feel like your teacher doesn't explain things well, or you don't get enough help in class, why not consider finding another teacher to boost your confidence and knowledge?
In Perth, the market for English tutoring for secondary students across all years is currently well established.
Many tutoring companies will provide you with trained tutors, or experts in the field to give you that extra edge for your next exam.
You may also want to consider looking for an English club or group program inside of the school as these are often available in public or private schools, but you may have to sacrifice a few lunchtimes. Your time at high school are some of the most important years of your life, so make sure to take it seriously!

At University Level
By the time you reach university level, English is of course not compulsory, but for many courses, it lays a foundation in first or second-year courses, and for the inevitable jobs hunt later down the road.
Many bachelor degrees, such as Literature, Linguistics, Teaching and of course English studies will have many courses in English.
To obtain a bachelor degree in Australia is not easy, you will face many challenges while studying.
If you are currently starting out you may want to consider finding extra private tuition. Many students with high WACE scores can still struggle to adapt to studying at university level and finding jobs, but luckily there is a lot of help out there for a student in your situation.
For cost-effective help for your bachelor degree or masters, first look into any study groups or resources available at your university library, or any student organisations and clubs that might be running.

Choosing a tutoring agency online
Several businesses around Perth offer tutoring online too.

he advantage of choosing an agency is that the companies provide background checks and teachers go through an interview process to ensure skills, qualifications and experience, so there is quality control.
The flip-side however is cost. With agencies usually offering lessons for $50+. Tutoring agencies usually offer other academic subjects like methods, chemistry, physics, biology and maths.
Just because half the working world shifted online in the year 2020, it doesn't mean you have to learn English online too!
Offline learning is particularly great if you or your child works better in small group situations. Some people need other learners around them to be motivated to learn.
