Frech language learning is as popular as ever, and internet resources have risen to meet the demand to make French learning as convenient and engaging as possible!

There are now hundreds of language learning apps available to download on your iPhone or iPad, democratising access to French language learning basics.

Are you ready to pick up a new language and broaden your cultural horizons? These great apps may well be for you.

On the other hand, there are some things a machine simply cannot teach, and some automated language learning apps have content provided by native speakers but not professional teachers.

These apps can support and enrich your French learning experience but are best used in conjunction with face-to-face classes, ideally with a qualified French teacher who has experience in guiding students towards French fluency.

On an Internet filled with automated chatbots and programmes, how do you go about seeking out a great French teacher or conversation partner?

Let Superprof help you narrow down your search and find the best French teacher for your individual needs.

French Courses Online: Establishing Your Needs and Goals

So, first thing's first, are you setting out on your French journey alone? Or will you be learning alongside a spouse, family member, friend, your child...

Or are you in the market for an online tutor for your school-age child(ren)?

What are your goals in French? Do you need French to advance in your career or are you making the move to France for work? Or perhaps you've simply fallen in love with the culture and language and dream of travelling there one day.

Other people might be learning French to communicate with family they've discovered in Switzerland, Belgium, or another French-speaking country.

Yet others want to reap the many intellectual and social benefits to learning French and becoming bilingual.

You'll need to take all of these criteria into account when you formulate your personal approach to French learning. Any teacher worth their pay will likely ask you some or all of these questions before tailoring a lesson plan to your needs.

And one final question; do you need to learn French in person, or would you be open to having your French lesson via webcam?

Once you know your goals and needs, onwards with your search for the right French teacher!

Finding A Teacher for French Lessons via Italki

Italki is a marketplace for language teachers and hosts more 5000 teacher profiles, offering over 100 different languages!

As with many of the best language learning sites, you'll need to register. This is free and allows you to explore a vast library of introductory videos uploaded by different French teachers. Take your time doing this, and find someone who piques your interest.

You'll also be able to read through reviews from teachers' previous students.

Then, get in touch and coordinate schedules to find a time that suits you both! Italki has a calendar and booking function, you only need to book in for a date and time offered on the appointment page and you're one step closer to your first French lesson together!

Every teacher signed up with Italki is certified and has uploaded their teaching and language credentials.

Italki follows a student-centric teaching philosophy, and teachers will adapt lessons to suit your needs.

You can plan out your own curriculum in consultation with your new teacher. Simply let them know about your background and French goals, and together you can come up with a lesson path to follow.

So how much does this all cost?

With Italki, you pay nothing up front, only for the lessons you actually have.

Another great feature offered by the Italki platform is the wider learning community you can join and chat with.

Within this forum, you can read blog articles by experienced teachers and students, or find language exchange partners to chat with and improve your conversational French. You'll be able to share your struggles with language learning in a group of people who face the same challenges or pose questions you've always had about French grammar.

Take An Online French Class with Lingoda

Lingonda offers two different experiences for the keen learner of French; you can choose to take one on one lessons, or group classes in the form of a "MOOC" (Massive Open Online Course)

With the MOOC format, several stduents will usually be online at the same time, tuning into the same teacher's class and interacting with the teacher during this time.

Like with all the language learning services we've mentioned, you need to start by declaring your current level of French - be it beginner, intermediate, or advanced. You'll then be put in an appropriate class with students who are a roughly similar level to you.

The group classes usually run for one hour, and the ratio is one teacher to no more than five students at once.

You also have the option of one-on-one sessions where you interact via Skype.

If you're preparing for your HSC or VCE French exams, you may need to invest in individualised tuition to perfect your accent or master your verb tenses.

The one-on-one classes provide a true French immersion experience. Tutors will track and mark your progress in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CERFL), which give clear guidelines on your level.

Unlike Italki, Lingoda is a subscription-based service, so you pay a monthly fee upfront and choose your class at a day and time that suits you. Your subscription is charged at the same rate, whether or not you miss a lesson.

Lingonda provides all of your learning materials, which are offered for download before your class time. You'll be able to save and even print these if you need, so you could feasibly carry around a vocabulary list or test yourself with some of their flashcards during a work break.

There isn't a wider learning community associated with Lingonda, but if you decide to take group lessons, you can stay in touch with your classmates outside your official lesson time to practice pronunciation together or have conversations in French.

Where Else Can You Take French Classes?

One-on-one classes are a great place to perfect your French, but if you want a truly personalised experience, you may like to check out Learn 4 Good.

You start by creating your own profile and including your language learning goals.

Learn 4 Good then submits this profile to a few different teachers listed in their database, who can then get in touch if they think their approach will suit your needs.

All of the teachers listed on Learn 4 Good are certified, all are native speakers, and they all hold previous experience teaching French to intermediate and beginner levels.

No matter your focus - be it listening comprehension or French pronunciation, Learn 4 Good will have a teacher to suit your needs.

This programme can work very well, but the final decision on which French teacher to choose is out of your hands.

Make sure your new teacher really does align with your French learning goals - the last thing you need is a teacher who insists on grammar drills when you need help with your vocabulary exam preparation!

Depending on your situation, you'll be looking to acquire different language skills.

When planning out your online French courses, make sure you listen carefully to any advice given by experienced teachers, whilst also stating your own needs.

Throughout Australia and online, Alliance Française offers classes on French language and culture led by native French teachers

Check to see if you have an Alliance nearby, but if not, why not take a look at their website? If you're a beginner, their online Basic French curriculum might be a good place to start.

No matter where you source your lessons, we can guarantee that learning with a real teacher will improve your French progress tenfold!

Find A French Tutor Online - with Superprof!

You're ready to take your French to the next level by engaging a personal tutor and finally mastering all those tricky French phrases. But perhaps you're still about where the best place to find a tutor might be?

Many people gravitate to free online sites like Gumtree or Free Ads, or go old-school by reading the classifieds in the local paper. There will certainly be some certified teachers here, but it's hard to filter them quickly for quality and suitability.

The major downside with these avenues is that you don't have many unbiased reviews or feedback to turn to ascertain the reliability or quality of instruction offered by your tutor.

That's where Superprof comes in!

On the other hand, Superprof tutors are required to give their credentials before being listed as a certified tutor with our platform. When you look at their profiles, you'll also need feedback from any former students displayed front and centre.

Find teachers for french lessons online.

You'll be able to tell in advance whether the tutor is a native French speaker, or if they are simply passionate about foreign language learning and have spent years perfecting their French. It will also be listed whether classes are in-person, or if you can learn French online with them.

You can choose an online tutor from anywhere in the world, and may even be able to Skype with a real Parisian from the City of Lights!

Even better, some tutors offer a free consultation so you can see if they are right for you.

Don't just dream about fluency any longer - perfect your French with Superprof!
