The only solid piece of scientific truth about which I feel totally confident is that we are profoundly ignorant about nature.
~ Lewis Thomas ~
When I was in primary school, I feared high school science. I don't know why, though I suspect it was something to do with my mother often telling me how much she disliked her science teacher, particularly his chemistry lessons, although biology lessons were okay. I never really asked her why and just assumed that it was because chemistry lessons were hard and biology lessons were easy.
As it turned out, as I was progressing through my high school years, I too disliked chemistry (and physics) but really enjoyed biology — but, in my experience, it most certainly wasn't easy.
The thing is, with any science subject, including physics and chemistry, there is going to be a mixture of theory lessons and practical application. Many students are hard-wired to be either kinesthetic learners (do-ers) or logical learners (thinkers), so needing both learning styles to function in biology is naturally going to make one component tougher than the other.
Knowing this doesn't mean students have to put up with it, saying 'Oh, it's just me. I've never been good at ...'
If you're keen to continue your science education, whether it be chemistry, physics or biology, at university and forge a career in your chosen field, Years 11 and 12 will be a crucial turning point — and is certainly the time to seriously consider whether you need to find a biology tutor in Perth, regional Western Australia or a tutor from anywhere in Australia to bring you up to speed.
What is Covered in the Year 11 and Year 12 Biology Curriculum?
The Australian Curriculum started being rewritten into its current form in 2009. It wasn't until 2014 that it started being implemented by Sydney (NSW), followed in succession by the other states, including Perth, Western Australia, in 2015.
Each education jurisdiction, controlled by individual states, uses the curriculum as the basis from which teaching occurs, although states also implement their own modifications. Western Australia is no different.
The senior secondary school curriculum is slightly different in that it is written from a unit of work perspective as opposed to the outcomes-based model for P–10, however, there are still clear guidelines regarding content and skills to be covered across Australia in Year 11 and Year 12 biology.
Across the two years, to achieve a major in biology, students must complete four units, two in Year 11 and two in Year 12:
- Biodiversity and the interconnectedness of life
- Cells and multicellular organisms
- Heredity and continuity of life
- Maintaining the internal environment
Throughout each unit of work, students are required to demonstrate the key science inquiry skills, including research, investigation, data analysis and representation, and communication, as well as theoretical and practical knowledge of the primary concepts.
The jump from high school biology to Year 11 and Year 12 biology in terms of expectations and independence can be staggering. This is where tutors come in handy; not only to teach and review key concepts but also for teaching essential study skills such as time management and exam techniques.
The pressures faced by students in Perth are no different to those faced by biology students in Canberra, Melbourne or Adelaide and all are encouraged to find a tutor who will help them get their education and learning back on track.
Getting Help Outside of Biology Class Hours
Help can come in many forms — friends, older students, a trusted teacher, counsellor, student services and tutors.
Tutors fall into three categories:
- senior students, university students or recent biology graduates
- a teacher with extensive teaching experience and qualifications in biology
- a biologist who may currently work part time in the field or simply enjoys tutoring on the side.
Whether online or face-to-face, a biology tutor in Perth will bring their own experience, knowledge and expertise to the tutoring lessons, along with people skills to help build rapport with the student and mutual trust. All are essential elements to build student confidence, which is a large proportion of the battle.
The other bonus to engaging a private tutor to work with you on a regular basis is the flexibility. A teacher will only be available during school hours, whereas private tutors can usually accommodate the time needs of their students, and are often happy to work in the evening or on weekends to fit in with the schedule of the student.
The Advantages of Hiring a Private Tutor
There are certainly many reasons for hiring a private tutor for Year 12 biology, not the least of which is to help students get ahead and prepare themselves for university studies.
In the not-so-distant past, tutoring used to be reserved for students with rich parents who wished for their children to be accepted into an elite school. Or tutoring was only accessed for the student with education difficulties or illness who had fallen far behind their peers.
These days, tutoring is becoming increasingly popular in Australia, perhaps because of the rapid pace of the current curriculum. The demand for tutoring in all subjects has been met by a significant rise in supply — tutoring agencies, online tutoring platforms and freelance tutors.
The general public in Australia are definitely embracing the benefits of accessing tutoring:
- A private learning experience may be exactly what the student needs to fully understand key concepts that they didn't comprehend when in a room with twenty other students.
- Lessons tailored to the needs of the student mean that the student is able to go over a difficult lesson or skill until the process becomes automatic.
- Hints and tips from tutors who have had the same experience as their student can often be invaluable as a memory aid or just an alternative process.
- Reignite interest and confidence, both of which can be quickly lost when the student finds they are falling behind.
- Improved outcomes and an increase in grades are always the goals and mostly achievable.
Where to Access Biology Tutoring
Whether you need to brush up on your skills prior to the exam period, are seriously behind and need help to catch up or you're struggling just with one particular lesson concept — there will be a private biology tutor in Perth who can help you achieve your education goals.
By all means, check university and high school noticeboards, ask your friends or your teacher, or check the ads on Gumtree from potential tutors. However, sometimes a shortlist of tutors and tutoring agencies can be appreciated, so we are happy to help with that.
This small tutoring agency offers help with maths, engineering and science, including the 'big 3' — chemistry, physics and biology — for students in high school and university. Pricing is based on the experience of the tutors, with an expert tutor (a current university undergraduate or postgraduate) available for tutoring at $50 an hour; and a degree-qualified premium tutor who charges $60 an hour. All lessons are private and take place either in the home of the student or in the public library.
Described by the founder as a bespoke tutoring agency, My Tutor uses a consultancy system to match a student with a tutor who has the experience and qualifications to meet the needs of the student. My Tutor specialised in maths and science (chemistry, physics and biology) tutoring for primary school, high school and university students. Private tutoring lessons take place fact-to-face in a location chosen by the student.
While there is certainly an abundance of tutors offering face-to-face private tutoring in the city of Perth, other towns in Western Australia are widespread and not necessarily easy to travel to and from, meaning online tutoring is essential. This is where Superprof steps in. With over 80,000 biology tutors on the Superprof platform throughout Australia, it doesn't matter where you live, it will be easy to find the right tutor for your needs.
If you'd really prefer in-person tutoring, most Superprof tutors offer that method as well and there is a growing number of biology tutors who actually live in Perth, or within travelling distance.
Why was the marine biology student so happy?
He found his porpoise.
We hope you achieve your goals and find your porpoise in the fascinating world of biology too. Good luck.
