It's easy to see that within our time, the internet has brought hours upon hours of new content into our lives on a daily basis which led to great differences in the way we live our lives.

Year upon year in Australia, primary school students in Melbourne VIC, HSC students thinking about their ATAR in Sydney NSW, or university students on the Gold Coast who want help finding jobs after their advanced chemistry or maths degree have been able to start to effectively receive the extra support they need thanks to online teachers and private tutors, with just session or two per week outside of the main curriculum.

Whether you're a child or adult studying some of the main subject areas like maths or English, or if you need a combination of face-to-face and online private tuition to gain confidence in whatever jobs you might be applying for, the fact that you will be able to make online tutoring work to a schedule that fits you is what makes it so easy and enjoyable.

Thanks to these technological developments and the changing attitudes toward online learning, platforms like Superprof make learning across Australia and the world easier thanks to the option of face-to-face private tuition or online connection with tutors.

Just think about how drastically education has changed in the last couple of years with the pandemic...

If we weren't able to use our time to receive lessons or academic support and work with teachers and tutors online, all schools, HSC/VCE, and universities would have gone belly up.

Reasons People Turn to Tutoring

It's easy to term private tutoring with a dedicated teacher in the field as one of the best ways to improve confidence and focus in the learning of a student. The great extra content they can provide will leave you content with the confidence of knowing that you will be able to face the main curriculum at your school or university.

Tutoring as a concept appeared hundreds of years before the HSC, ATAR, or even Sydney was thought of by the English. It was however mostly an English innovation to have a private teacher come to your home in the 18th century to provide scholastic support beyond just the regular curriculum once education was made mandatory for all.

This started with specialised subjects for those students who came from families of some means, with subjects like maths, English, literature, classics, history, chemistry and astronomy, Latin, and French to name a few.

As more and more students joined the education system year after year, however, standardised testing became a mainstay of any school or university course.

This then spread to the United States and Australia, as well as the rest of the English-speaking world, then further afield. Coast to coast, people were involved in the education market without knowing it every time they tried to boost their academic prospects.

Consequently, extra support was deemed necessary by many either to stay up to speed with what was being taught in class or to get extra help to excel for better scores or specific exam preparation.

These reasons endure today and remain the typical justifications for students seeking tutors. There are those who simply do it for the joy of learning, but for the most part, pupils work with a tutor to "fix or enhance" something to do with education, with a view to better scores and more prospects or jobs later.

The pros of online learning are much more detailed than we can show here, so have a look at our other guide on this.

Let's dive into five reasons why online tutoring really strikes a chord with children, parents, students, and teachers alike.

Availability

We can assume that you're in a big Australian city if you're reading this, but if you're not from Sydney NSW or Melbourne VIC, this is all just as relevant since if you're cluey, you will know that term after term, there will be an online tutor who can help regardless of their location.

Private tutoring isn't just for cluey or struggling Australian students - it's also there for passionate ones too.

The Australian curriculum covers a wide range of subjects, from art to chemistry to Mandarin, even from early on in primary school. It's easy to assume then that even from term 1 of year 1, your child or children will be enthused by at least one of the subjects they're in.

But what if word of mouth or the local bulletin board isn't enough to help your child let their true artistic colours shine? You might have the next Rembrandt on your hand but not know it because the tutors in your area either don't specialise in what your child wants or simply don't work with children.

Enter online tutoring to drastically widen the catchment of tutors that you can engage with. Beyond this, children are so adept at using computers even from a young age now that keeping their attention for 30 minutes at a time will not be particularly difficult if you're engaging them in the subject they're really passionate about.

Beyond this, parents might want to keep learning too. The exposure the kids will get can show just how much and how conveniently education can take place online in a space and time frame that suits your busy schedule.

And this is just one of the great benefits of online tutoring.

Let's go

Convenience

As we just mentioned, time and place are much more flexible with online tutoring.

Imagine you're really struggling with maths at school, yet you only have 1 hour every day to really engage with concepts, yet can't ask the teacher to explain things in more depth because 25 other pupils need their attention.

You might feel too embarrassed to go and ask them for the extra support, and you might need to get to your next class anyway.

The good news is, that the internet is always open and has no fixed schedule. So, if you're needing someone to come and explain the ways you can crack Pythagoras's theorem, they can do it virtually whenever (if you're willing to work with different time zones), and you can do this all from the comfort of your bedroom thanks to your computer.

Think about the quality of what you can get too, especially when it comes to something like languages. You might not have a native French speaker who lives near you, but instead of having to commute to meet them, perfect Parisian French is at your fingertips, and you'll perhaps even be able to connect with someone who lives in-country too.

Don't be afraid to go further if you need more positive proof that online learning works.

Safety

This is more for the peace of mind of parents. What if your child had a tutor that you had never met that was coming to your home when you weren't there?

Online tutoring uses vetting principles and checks the credentials of the tutor to ensure that they are trustworthy and their education level can be vouched for. This also includes a police check to verify that they are able to work with children.

When it comes to university students and older learners, it's also worthwhile knowing that there's a screen between you and a stranger (at least for the first couple of sessions) before you get into the swing of learning together.

Technology

Disclaimer: Blended learning i.e. a mixture of online and in-person education is shown to yield the best results, so don't discount learning in real life just yet!

Learners of all ages nowadays are so adept at the technology that it might actually put them at ease to use technology in a lesson since they are familiar with how to enhance their own capabilities with this.

Beyond just the digital prowess of the digital natives today, there are so many new platforms and applications that can be used to enhance knowledge acquisition.

Just think of the kinds of revision apps that exist for language, using flashcards and visuals to increase information retention. And what about interactive whiteboards? The ideas of the student writing can be broadcast for all to see on the main screen in the Zoom classroom.

Then, let's not forget the ease of access we now have to TED talks and free lectures. Whatever subject or supplementary knowledge we have on our radar, we can seek it, write a report on it, and then share the document with others in a Google drive folder with a click of a mouse.

Have your say: why is online tutoring proving so popular?

Price

This might seem shocking given the extra workload of tutors when adapting pedagogy from in-person to digital, but given the much lower overheads, it makes sense to charge less.

Just think about:

  • zero travel costs or commute times
  • fewer supplies are needed if the student can just download them themselves
  • a whole internet to draw upon for teaching materials
  • a more competitive range of tutors to choose from

Whatever your year of school or level of education, an online tutor is highly practical and gives just the same amount of academic support as an in-person one would.
