Learning languages is a difficult road that comes with its own challenges, from improving your writing level through constant reading and practice, to finding a teacher or tutor who speaks to you in a way you can easily understand.

While it's true that studying languages isn't easy, it doesn't have to be a trial for students. The best way to make your learning more effective is to choose a teaching setting that works best for you as a student.

There are plenty of options when it comes to studying a second language. The main options are:

  • Self-study options using apps like Duolingo;
  • A group course at a private language school;
  • Classes at university, possibly as part of a diploma or other certificate; or
  • Private tutoring with an experienced and professional teacher.

Each pupil will learn to speak, read, write and more using their own method, or maybe even a mix of those we've listed above. Apps might be useful for reviews of vocabulary studied in a group course, or tutors can help with specific skills like reading or writing.

No matter whether you want to try a group class, hire a teacher for private tutoring or use books and apps to create your own study program, Superprof can help you understand where to look and what to look for.

Take Classes With Other Students at a Language School or University

Unfortunately, most schools in Australia don't usually offer Hindi as one of the language subjects available to study, whether at the high school or university level. In fact, the Australian National University (ANU) South Asia Research Institute is actually calling for this to change.

There are plenty of work opportunities

The Institute believes Hindi is a priority Asian language that educators should be teaching across the country. This is mostly due to the important trade relationship between Australia and India that can only be improved by teaching more students the Hindi language.

In fact, the Institute aims to promote contact with the Hindi language through workshops for education providers and language specialists on subjects from creating a national curriculum to the creation of CLIL materials in Hindi for other subjects like science and maths.

While this Institute and other organisations are slowly changing the curriculum over the years, a learner who wants to trial Hindi classes still has to spend hours searching for Hindi classes.

We've saved you a little bit of time by looking for the most popular ways to study Hindi in Australia...

Teaching At Adult Education Centres

If you're looking for experienced and professional educators to teach you the skills you need to speak, read and write in Hindi, then specialist schools are a great idea. The teachers usually have plenty of experience and are used to spending hours teaching all types of students.

If you're not sure where to look, start with an online search for language schools or try your local TAFE. Here are some options to view:

  • Centre for Adult Education (CAE), Melbourne: This school offers courses both in-person and online, mostly at a more elementary level. Each lesson runs for two hours, with 1 lesson a week for 9 weeks. The course aims to teach not only Hindi language skills but also introduces students to cultural aspects.
  • IABBV Hindi School, Sydney: This school offers classes for all students, young and old. There are classes at every level, from beginner to advanced, and get involved in the range of community events they organise.

Learn Hindi at the University Level

If you want to use your skills as a native English speaker, plus your hours and years of Hindi studies to work in fields like international trade, interpreting and translating and more, you might need a more official Hindi qualification.

This could take different forms, such as including Hindi classes as elective subjects in your degree, or a qualification specifically for Hindi education. Some options for Australian students are:

  • Hindi as part of your degree: In some university degrees, especially those in Arts or Social Science fields, languages are considered an important area of study. In some degrees, such as the Bachelor of Asian Studies offered by ANU, you can major in the language. Otherwise, you may use your elective or breadth options.
  • Diploma of Languages: Some universities offer language studies as a separate qualification, which generally last for two years. La Trobe in Melbourne and ANU in Canberra are just a couple that offer this option.

Don't forget there are also Hindi self-study options if you don't have time to attend a course.

Find A Private Tutor to Teach You Key Hindi Language Skills

There are many reasons why a student might prefer to trial one-on-one tuition rather than lesson after lesson in a group. This might be because you feel you need extra help with reading or writing, or you want to learn vocabulary related to specific subjects like science or law.

Potential students might think that, again, their only option is to spend hours reading online profiles, tutor reviews and more, however, this isn't quite the case. There are actually a few different methods for finding a great professional to provide Hindi tuition.

Local Hindi Cultural Organisations

Most cities in Australia are home to a large number of native Hindi speakers, because of the huge Indian diaspora. These groups have created associations that allow them to feel a sense of connection with India, or even their specific region, even at a distance.

While these cultural organisations generally provide services to those in the local Indian community, they're also a great resource. One phone call to a local organisation can help you find an experienced, native-speaking teacher who is well respected in their community.

They can also be a great resource when it comes to cultural materials for learning Hindi like books, films, magazines and more. The Australian Hindi Indian Association is a good place to start searching for your local organisation.

Contact A School or University

As we listed before, there is a range of higher education options for adult students looking to trial group classes. If this isn't quite the right method of teaching for you, and you want to trial some hours of private tuition, schools and universities can still be good resources.

You can contact a tutor privately and ask if they would consider taking you on as a private student, or if they know any other teachers who offer one-on-one tuition. This way, you're guaranteed to find a professional educator who's been teaching for years.

The only downside to this method is that the price of a one-on-one lesson with a teacher of this level might be a little higher than you're willing to spend.

Online Options

If you've exhausted these options to no avail or would prefer to spend time searching online for a private tutor, then are a few options that you could try out.

First, you never know who knows you in your community of friends. You might know someone who knows someone who speaks native-level Hindi and even tutors students. Write a post on a site like Facebook or Instagram to see if you have any connections already.

If this doesn't work, it's time to turn to other online platforms to find tutors. There are plenty of options, but the best place to start (and probably end your search) is Superprof!

Superprof exists exactly for this purpose, to connect students with potential tutors in different areas of learning, from economic science to art history. Just fill in your subject and area of Australia, and you will quickly be presented with a long list of great, professional tutors.
