For Those Taking HSC Maths

The biggest maths exam most people will take in their lives is undoubtedly an HSC Maths Exam.

We also realise many of our readers will be looking for a maths tutor for their child as they move into Years 11 and 12.

For these important years that set a young person up for their future career (and therefore the rest of their life!), you want to ensure whoever you're hiring is up to standard and competent in teaching the HSC curriculum.

Help your teen minimise HSC maths stress with the help of a skilled tutor who knows the curriculum inside-out.

Since maths is not compulsory at the HSC level, reports show that enrolment in HSC Maths has been declining slightly over the years, but 3 out of 4  students still take some form of maths subject.

Did you know: there is a current push to make maths education compulsory at the HSC level, to ensure each student graduates with basic numeracy skills

The most popular HSC maths subject is General Maths (a non-calculus course), with 41% of HSC students taking this subject in 2018.

The highest-level maths subject, Maths Extension 2, is only studied by around 4%-5% of students each year, but these students will need lots of extra help to pass the famously tough Extension 2 exams.

Around 11-12% of the student body studies Maths Extension 1, the next level down, whilst around a quarter of students will enrol in Mathematics.

Each of these kinds of students has very different needs and expectations around maths, which is why it's so important to find the right fit when it comes to a tutor.

Private tuition is highly recommended, and you should look for an agency or tutor specialising in the HSC syllabi, such as Cluey Learning, Capra Coaching or EIM Tuition.

If you'd like to look beyond private tutoring to help you absorb the content of the HSC syllabus, many of the Sydney universities also offer an HSC preparation course, including this one from The University of Sydney.

Maths Help For University Students

If you are a university student looking for help with maths, don't look past the free help programs available on Campus, like this one from the University of Sydney.

Sometimes this will take the form of one-on-one help, but often there is a kind of drop-in centre available - like this program at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Library. where you can get help alongside other students with similar maths-related issues or questions.

Study maths at university
Don't study alone - get help with maths at your local university library!

If you generally find it motivating to study alongside other people or you're short on cash (and honestly, which university student isn't?!), this is a great solution for you! If you don't see your university listed here, why not check out what programs are available through your university's library portal?

Don't struggle with university maths alone: check out the study groups and drop-in centres offered through your university library, and learn with other students facing the same maths-related headaches!

The Old School Method: Word of Mouth, Classifieds

Yes, you can still find ads for maths tutors in the papers! Many larger companies will still advertise there.

Obviously, most classifieds have moved onto platforms like Gumtree, but buyer beware!

There is very little quality control when hiring an independent tutor through Gumtree, so if you do find someone there, be sure to ask for references from past workplaces or past students.

Gumtree is attractive because it's a well-known, convenient platform and the tutoring prices there often look temptingly low, but with sites like Gumtree, you'll pay for what you get.

On the other hand, it is very easy to search for tutoring by location and find someone near you!

Another great way to find someone tutoring maths in your suburb is to look at your local noticeboard - you can scan for them at your local library, community centre, church or even the newsagent or local coffee shop or bookshop.

We highly recommend word of mouth for finding a local tutor - don't be shy to put up a Facebook post mentioning that you're looking for a tutor to help with your specific maths needs - be they calculus, algebra or the dreaded quadratic equation - to reach your next potential teacher through your personal network.

You can hire this person with confidence, safe in the knowledge that they come recommended by a friend!

You can also find a maths tutor in your area on your local suburb or area's Facebook group - these often act like virtual community noticeboards or the classifieds of old.

Every Sydney suburb will have its own dedicated page - if you're not already a member, simply search "My suburb" on Facebook, and it should be one of the top search results.

Online Tutoring

Whether you're a busy parent looking for lessons for your child, or a busy professional looking for lessons for yourself outside your normal work hours, it can be hard to find someone nearby who can suit your schedule.

This explains the rise in popularity of online tutoring, which can be done from the comfort of your own home.

With online tutoring, fitting some extra maths help or lessons into your busy life has never been easier!

Big names in the biz include sites such as Live Tutor Online.

You can also use the advanced search feature on Superprof to find a private tutor in Sydney who teaches online via Skype or Zoom.
