I assess each student on their methods of learning then create some text and real-life material for them to learn so it is applicable for them as much as possible. I draw on fun games and also Chinese cartoons and movies to make our lessons (and homework) as fun as possible. I make sure each student walks away from my lessons finding Chinese more and more interesting not only as a language but also as a culture. In group sessions and conditions permitting, I will also teach mahjong and take students to Chinese meals as little excursions from the textbook material.
During my undergrad years at Waterloo, I started off in Environmental Studies but after a co-op term in Shanghai changed my perspective, I switched into Humanities and focused on my East Asia Studies Minor. My forte is in the socio-political scope of China. Hong Kong and South Korea currently interest me the most, as I am always thinking about what the future holds for Asia in the future generations to come. Though I am a locally born and raised Chinese Canadian, my Cantonese and Chinese writing skills is flawless thanks to the continuous years of Chinese school up til my graduation at Waterloo. I have lots of experience with kids as I was a summer camp counselor for ten years.
