I teach Suzuki method, which involves learning to play by ear, before learning to read music. This is the method I was taught at the beginning and I recommend it. This will particularly help students to play styles such as jazz and blues, which involve improvisation.
I am a new violin teacher. I have been playing violin for 19-20 years and was in the Secondary Schools String Symphony for 3 years, rising to the position of lead violinist. I also have a Diploma of Music and learnt to play a variety of styles.
