I am passionate about tutoring, and enjoy building a rapport with students. I'm a very relaxed person who is easy to talk to and will provide support outside of tutoring sessions. I think I am able to help students to improve their academic abilities, while also helping them to feel empowered and confident. It's important to me to engage students in discussion and help them to comprehend the material on their own terms. For students who are struggling with essay writing — particularly in year 12 — I often teach a specific method to follow which allows students to structure their writing with ease. I often focus on helping students to assess their mistakes in past exams and assignments to identify areas to focus on improving.
I have 3+ years of experience tutoring English to students of all ages. In the past I have assisted students with many aspects of their English studies, including grammar, general reading comprehension, test and exam preparation, and writing, in both 1-on-1 and class settings (of up to 20+ students). I am particularly experienced with helping students improve their ability to write structured essays: including pieces that analyse texts, article analysis, philosophical essays amongst other types. As well as teaching students from year 7-9 (can potentially negotiate teaching younger students), I can offer extensive support to students doing VCE English, EAL, and Literature at both 1/2 and 3/4 levels.
In addition, I have a lot of experience teaching students for whom english is a second language, particularly students whose first language is Chinese. As well as teaching privately, to the present I have worked for a number of companies including: The Intuition Centre, Meridian One, St Vincents Institute of Education, The Elite Education and Migration Centre. One of my best teaching experiences was with ISA Australia, tutoring small groups students at junior and senior high schools in urban and also rural Japan. These classes were discussion-based, focused on critical thinking and empowerment skills. It was an great opportunity for cross-cultural learning, and I found it interesting to understand the perspectives of young people growing up in Japan.
I am in my last semester of a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Melbourne, majoring in Psychology and Philosophy, as well as doing a concurrent Language Diploma in Japanese. In the future I hope to go on to become a Psychological researcher, so next year I plan to do Honours in Psychology.
