This depends on how much knowledge the student has of Spanish. They may have heard some words in films or in songs that have resonated and if that is the case we can play with that. I want the students to learn a few basic expressions early on e.g "¿Como se dice?" (How do you say) and such things as hello and goodbye and pleased to meet you etc Most students in Australia are wanting to learn to speak and understand so my main focus is on conversation. The Spanish pronunciation of the 5 vowels is an absolute must, but it's fun to learn and we do it in a playful way.
I taught English to Hispanics and Spanish to foreigners for 5 years in Mexico. I have a Bachelor's degree in Languages specializing in Spanish. I am at present doing a research project on the effects on language development of children living in multilingual families.
