In the first lesson, I like to gauge where the student is currently at. This includes understanding the subject overview for the year (ie which topics are covered in which weeks).
Once that is noted, I ask the student what difficulties they're currently facing - whether it is challenging teaching styles, difficult content, etc.
From this, there are many approaches to choose from:
1) Student brings in work from class each week and go through it together
2) Student brings assignment/test outline for upcoming assessments
3) Review content based on the weeks stated in subject outline (resources can be provided)
Or anything which the student feels is more important.
Originally from Perth WA, I am currently in Townsville QLD studying a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery at James Cook University.
I have been tutoring for 3 years, and have seen students gain confidence in their learning, resulting in obtaining higher marks.
