About Umar

Previous Experience
- I have many years of experience teaching a diverse audience; ranging from GCSE/IB/A Level students to medical students and doctors.
- I am currently the lead instructor at an online medical admissions course for A Level students to help them with their Personal Statement, UKCAT, BMAT and Interview. I deliver this course online through video teaching software.
- I have taught in a variety of settings, including 1 on 1 tutoring, webinars, small group and larger lecture formats (up to 1000 people).
- My teaching experience spans not only academic skills, but practical skills in the fields of medicine and surgery.
- My profession has given me the great privilege of being able to work with people from diverse backgrounds and with different learning needs.

About the lesson

Hello, I am a London based medical doctor with an immense passion for teaching the sciences and maths at GCSE, A Level and IB. My specialty subject is Biology, where I particularly excel and have taught the most hours.

My Story
I was born and raised in Leeds (UK) and attended Bradford Grammar School (2005 to 2010), where I completed my GCSE and A Levels in the sciences and mathematics. I then went on to attend medical school at Imperial College London (2010 to 2016), where I received my undergraduate education, passing all examinations with distinction and merit. I am currently working as a doctor at a busy teaching hospital in London.

GCSE/A Level/IB
- It was not so long ago that I was sitting these exams in my school auditorium; I know how it feels to be in your shoes!
- I am intimately familiar with the current curriculum and up to date with the latest developments in Science and Mathematics for the major exam boards including AQA, Edexcel and OCR.
- My expertise lies in the Triple Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths. I am particularly proficient in teaching Biology due to my medical background.
- I will help you or your child achieve a broad understanding of the subject, refine their approach with targeted examination style practice and regularly track progress. (more about my unique teaching style below).

Medical School Applications and Interviews
- If you or your child are preparing for medical school applications or interviews, I can give you the ‘inside scoop’ on what makes a good application and interview.
- I can help refine and prune your personal statement, or get you ready or help you crack th, BMAT, UKCAT or Interview.
- I am currently a lead instructor at a popular online medical admissions course which prepares A Level students for medical school applications.

Teaching Style:
As a student, I absolutely hated (and still hate) being lectured to like a brick wall. My aim is to provide my students a wholesome and thorough understanding of the subject at hand.

Here is what you can expect from my teaching style:
1. First Session: During our first lesson I will ask you some questions about your current situation, knowledge gaps, goals, concerns and expectations. This helps me work with you to chart a plan for our future course. I am fluid and flexible; accommodating your needs is my primary concern. *I am happy to offer this lesson at a reduced rate.
2. Prior Preparation: Before each session, I will send you a breakdown of what we are going to cover in the form of a coherent lesson plan. This gives you a chance to chop or change anything, so that you gain maximum benefit within the time we have together.
3. Interaction and Engagement: Our lessons will be fun, engaging and interactive. I like encouraging you to arrive at solutions and join the dots through your own intuition. Our teaching sessions will incorporate both lecture style and Socratic methods.
4. Bite Size: I like to break down each concept into bite sized portions; ensuring that you understand each part of the puzzle before building the bigger picture.
5. Examination Style: If your focus is preparing for a particular exam, then we will pepper our sessions with regular examination style questions and practice. I will help you get up to speed in no time!
6. Regular Assessment: I hope that you will take part in monitoring my performance as we go along. Providing my students and parents the utmost value is very important to me and the best way I can do this is by receiving regular feedback.
7. Teamwork: Teamwork is essential to our success; I look forward to working closely with yourself and your parents to accomplish the goals we set out during our first session.
