My teaching method is very flexible and developed based on the needs of each individual student. It involves always making everything easier to understand and cementing the foundations, before tackling more complex challenges via the use of visual aids, flow charts and consistently quizzing the student to keep them practicing and revising their topics, and to ensure they have understood what is going on.
I always aim to relate my teachings to examples in the real world so the information taught is consolidated. Thus my aim is for the student to understand everything being taught rather than memorising for the sake of memorising. Psychological evidence shows that information is better retained if it is semantically retained - I.e. the information is not memorised but rather understood and this type of information is retained for longer periods in the brain than rote learnt information.
I always additionally give general advice regarding tactics and methods on how to effectively study at home to improve performance in all subjects, and not just the subject I am tutoring. I aim to teach my students how to independently improve their own learning.
Lesson structure involves a question period, a teaching period and finishes off with a quizzing period.
I am a 6th year dental student studying Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Melbourne. I have been giving private lessons in year 7-10 English, Maths and Science since 2014 and additionally tutor for ITAS (Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme) at the University of Melbourne. I am flexible with my times and am happy to travel to the student’s house or meet in a mutual location.
