About Conor
I'm originally from Ireland, now based in Kingston. I studied Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research at Queen's University Belfast, graduating with an MSci (2.1) in 2018. Since then I've been running my own business where I use maths and statistics every day, so the subject hasn't gathered any dust.
I've been teaching in one form or another for years - I taught uilleann pipes and tin whistle to kids aged 8 to 18 at the Armagh Pipers Club, both one-to-one and in groups. I also volunteered as a mentor in Vancouver helping primary school children with their homework through a Big Brother programme. Between those two things I've got a decent feel for how to work with young people at different ages and confidence levels.
I'm a father of two, and I also have a brother with special needs, so I have a personal understanding of how teaching needs to be adapted for different learners, including those with autism. I know that what works for one student won't necessarily work for another, and I'm comfortable adjusting my approach to fit.
Outside of maths I play uilleann pipes professionally and I'm into sport, so I tend to get on well with students who need someone they can actually have a conversation with rather than just another teacher talking at them.

Sessions are typically 60 minutes. I start each one by checking in on what's been covered at school that week and where things aren't clicking, then we dig into it together. I don't just work through textbook examples - I try to find the specific point where a student is getting lost and build from there. I use a lot of diagrams and visual explanations, especially for things like trigonometry, graphs, and geometry where seeing it makes everything click. For algebra and problem-solving, I break things into small steps and ask questions rather than just showing the method - I want the student to figure it out with a bit of guidance, not just copy what I do. I cover KS2 and KS3 (including SATs prep), GCSE Foundation and Higher, A-Level Maths, and Further Maths. For exam preparation I work with past papers and mark schemes so students learn what the examiners are actually looking for - things like showing working, using correct notation, and knowing when a question wants proof rather than just an answer. I'm happy to work on whatever the student needs - weekly support alongside school, targeted help on a specific weak topic, or intensive revision before exams.
