Based on my education, training, and experience I have developed an approach that can be summarized in four rules. 1. The notes and the music are not the same thing. 2. Technique and interpretation are the same thing. 3. Practicing is practical and 100% goal oriented. 4. Hard work is never in vain.
This approach is flexible and works with all ages and levels. I also stress good habits of learning and body use to give you the most rapid progress possible and to help you love and enjoy music all your life.
I am a piano instructor with 30 years experience. I have a BA in Piano performance from the U. of Minnesota and a MM in Collaborative Piano from Northwestern U, Evanston, IL. I played the trumpet and soloed with my high school orchestra in a Vivaldi trumpet concerto. From ages 12 - 18 I studied piano at MacPhail School of Music and soloed with the MacPhail Orchestra in Anton Rubinstein's Concerto in D Minor. While at the U of M I worked at the Minnesota Dance Theater and School as an accompanist for modern dance and ballet. I have accompanied singers professionally and played a lot of chamber music because I love it.
I also studied Critical Theory for three years. During that time I studied in Germany on a DAAD scholarship. I went into business rather than try to persue an academic career, and owned and ran a trade show management company.
Attended a pre-school for gifted children for three years run by the Dept. of Child Development, U of MN.

David is an amazing piano teacher. He is very nice and has an amazing amount of patience. David has really helped me advance in piano.
- Myles, age 13
Our two sons have been taking piano lessons with David Holland for many years. He is very good with kids, teens, and of course parents.
He provides special attention and feedback of physical technique for playing specific types and styles of pieces. He emphasizes musicality and provides especially good feedback. I can hear what a big difference this makes for to students both in enthusiasm and results.
He uses and explains in proper musical terminology, not talking down to his students. He is well versed in all styles of music of interest to our sons. We also appreciate his answers to questions of music theory and historical background details he provides.
As a special bonus, his piano sounds great!
David is an exceptional teacher. My 7 year old son is unique and needed a teacher that would understand him as both a student and a child. David is very communicative. I attend every lesson with my son and David speaks to us both so we have a clear understanding of what needs to be worked on. Having a teacher who cares and gets to know his students as well as David does is exactly what we were looking for. David keeps my son challenged, yet at the same time, he knows when to pull back so that my son doesn’t feel overwhelmed. It takes an experienced teacher to have such awareness. I couldn’t be more impressed and happy to have a teacher like David.
