« I have known Hans for over twenty years. I knew him first when we were at the same institution where we both completed doctorial degrees. Since then I worked with him at the same University. He is an outstanding teacher who is very dedicated. He is friendly and patient, and can explain difficult concepts in physics in a clear way. I have seen very positive assessments by students in their feedback on lecturing staff. I would thoroughly recommend him in capacity as a tutor. »

Retired Charles Sturt University physics lecturer (33 years teaching experience) gives physics tutorials to HSC and university physics students in Wagga Wagga, NSW.

Methodology

I have always enjoyed passing on my passion for physics to my students. I use a tutorial style during my teaching, asking questions as I proceed to see whether students are following my arguments. I discuss the concepts involved and then do tutorial examples to consolidate student understanding. When students have difficulty with particular concepts, I patiently work through the material again or use different methods, and examples to explain. I also provide exercises for the student to do prior to his/her following tutorial. I may also refer students to relevant you-tube videos to watch.

Background

I have taught physics at Charles Sturt University (CSU) for 33 years, and prior to that, to technology students in the RAAF. I have taught all aspects of physics at HSC level, undergraduate and at postgraduate level. I have also taught medical physics such as MRI and Ultrasound physics and technology. Physics is an amazing discipline, and I am passionate at tutoring students to succeed in their study.

Details

I will charge in blocks, payment up-front for 5 tutorials within a 2 month period. If a student cancels a tutorial, he/she can use the cancelled tutorial later within the two month period (if my schedule permits), but cancelling too much will not allow make-up tutorials. Students could buy multiple blocks to lengthen the time for cancellations to expire (i.e. to allow make-up tutorials).

BSc (Hons) in Physics and PhD in Physics, both from University of New England (UNE), NSW Australia.

Academic experience:
Awards received as undergraduate at UNE -
(i) Peel-Cunningham County Council Prize for best 2nd year student in undergraduate physics at UNE.
(ii) Commonwealth Postgraduate Scholarship awarded to undertake a PhD in physics at UNE.

Employment experience:
(1) Education Officer, Royal Australian Air Force, teaching physics and mathematics to technologist apprentices for 3 years.
(2) Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in physics at Charles Sturt University (CSU) (and its predecessor institutes) for 31 years.
(3) Online teaching of a post-graduate ultrasound physics subject to two separate universities for 3 years.

CSU Teaching experience:
I have taught a variety of undergraduate physics subjects in several courses at CSU. I mainly focused on teaching (a) all aspects of first year physics at different academic levels, and (b) atomic, nuclear and quantum physics at second and third year level.

I also designed an undergraduate ultrasound physics subject for medical imaging students studying at CSU, and later a postgraduate ultrasound physics and instrumentation subject for Medical Ultrasound Masters students. I have taught these subjects for many years, and have also been on sabbatical leave, researching in ultrasound technology. In addition, I have also taught magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) physics and research methodology (including basic statistics).

Student evaluations:
I have always had very good student evaluations on my teaching style, and on my interest in their success in the subjects I have taught them.

Other information:
I am married, and enjoy mountain-bike riding and swimming as sporting activities.

I have been a colleague of Hans Swan for a number of years. Hans has always been a dedicated teacher and was always available to help students. Students have really appreciated the way Hans was willing to help them through difficult content. I would highly recommend Hans to any student learning physics.
