Richard Clement - Experienced Teacher - General & Business English - IELTS - FCE - CAE - PTE - TOEFL

Methodology

~ My Lessons and Teaching Style ~

I believe it is important for the student to get the most out of their lesson time. Therefore, I encourage my students to do most of the speaking and try to limit myself to asking questions/facilitating conversation or providing corrections where necessary.

For correction, I try to provide feedback immediately for grammar, vocabulary of pronunciation mistakes. I feel this is one of the best ways a student can learn and improve.

I regularly receive feedback from students that I am extremely patient and that I am an excellent teacher.

One of our best tutors! High-quality profile, qualified and response guaranteed.
Richard will plan your first lesson with care.

Background

Do you need to improve your IELTS speaking score? Do you need to attend meetings, write email/reports, or speak to colleagues at work in English?

If so, I can help you.

~ My Background ~

I’ve been teaching general English at all levels, including business and academic English for 6 years.

After you have scheduled a lesson with me, I will ask your English learning goals. During your first few lessons, we will work together to create a study plan that you can take with you, even if you decide not to continue lessons with me. This means you will be able to continue to improve your English on your own!

I have a CELTA certificate in teaching English, as well as a Bachelor of Computer Science. I worked in the Information Technology field for over 18 years, at many corporations such as Rothschild, Siemens, KPMG, Westinghouse and Australia Post.

7 years ago, I decided to change career and follow my passion which is teaching!!

I have also taught juggling for about 20 years and I love seeing the joy on someone’s face when they learn something new. It’s amazing to watch someone improve their skills over time.

I am also a life/business coach and very focused on helping my students achieve their English, life, and business goals.

~ Me as a Teacher ~

I feel that I am extremely empathetic and always try to ensure that my clients are getting the most out of their learning experience, regardless of whether they are in a classroom or one on one situation. I try to constantly improve myself as a teacher by using continuous improvement techniques to re-assess how each teaching session went.

Having good rapport with my students is vital - I realise that learning a language can be a very difficult process and I always try to support students by being aware of their needs and also how much/little feedback they should be receiving in each situation.

~ I am experienced teaching the following ESL topics ~

+ General English: Beginner > Advanced
+ Academic exam preparation: IELTS, FCE, CAE, TOEFL, PTE, etc.
+ Business English: meetings, interviews, presentations, resumes, job applications, email/report writing, and general communication with work colleagues.

~ Testimonial ~

I have taken English lessons from several teachers but Richard is definitely the best. He tries to understand your needs to organize a tailor-made lesson for you.

If you want to learn English or improve your language level learnding with Richard is the right choice!

Fabrizia Noro (biomedical researcher - Italy)

~ My Vision Statement ~
Help my students achieve their personal & career goals, while improving their English language.

~ My Ethos ~
+ Authenticity
+ Integrity
+ Continuous self-improvement of myself & clients
+ Passion for helping students
+ Be grateful to be a part of your journey
+ Humility within all interactions

~ My Core Goals ~
Help my students:
+ Create & achieve their English learning goals
+ Improve their confidence
+ Discover & release their passion for learning languages
+ Secure a satisfying career
+ Find inspiration within themselves
+ Improve personal & professional time & project management skills
+ With their professional writing needs - theses, papers, assignments & resumes
+ Constantly challenge myself & my clients while using humility

I greatly look forward to meeting you online so that we can create your tailor-made lesson and study plan.

Perfect! I highly recommend Richard. I like his teaching style and method and he finds always a way to motivate you when times are not easy - simply the very best!!

Perfect! Everyone can teach English, but the ways Richard has guided me are not what every teacher can do. Not only has he helped me to create a study plan that suits me, but has also supported me along the way by giving suggestions and recommendations about how I can improve my skills during my own free time.

Besides, his teaching approach of using positive reinforcements and encouraging me to correct my own English has boosted my self-esteem. The skills he has taught me are not only about English, but also the techniques to improve it myself. This has further increased my confidence in writing and speaking.

After the few lessons I had with Richard, I can clearly see my improvements in writing, listening, and speaking. I have also become more aware of how I construct, sound out, and write sentences. Therefore, I see Richard as an amazing, optimistic, and professional English tutor.

I've known Richard for years as an exceptional teacher and friend. I met him when I was a newcomer to Australia, and he was one of the first people to make me feel truly welcome. He has a fantastic ability to break down complex topics and always provides plenty of encouragement. I'd recommend him to anyone who wants to better themselves and achieve their goals.

Richard not only possesses the aptitude in teaching and tutoring, he also dsiplays the personality, thoughtfulness, and hardwork ethic that is required in this profession, I cannot think of a better person able to to connect properly with his students whilst providing the learning experience that is expected in Australia. Highly recommended!

I've known Richard for about 12 years. Over that time we have shared a lot of ideas and knowledge with each other - he even taught me juggling and Diabolo. Over those years Richard has always proven to be very attentive and amazingly patient when teaching. Your learning becomes his personal goal - and he does not stop until it is achieved!

I'm a student from Italy. I've been having classes with Richard and I must confess that he is the best English teacher I have ever had! Besides being well prepared with IELTS exams, he also has a solid historical and cultural background. He is equipped with useful teaching material and his lessons are carefully prepared according to my needs and goals. Once the lesson is over, he regularly sends me notes and corrections from the lesson. In short, I don't think it's possible to have better teacher than him. Super approved !!
Thank you Richard!

I highly recommend Richard as an English teacher. He is a great teacher who encourages students to study or practice outside the lessons. I consider him a disciplined person because he has always shared his notes with me and tracks my progress while learning English. I also recommend Richard to Spanish native speakers since he has large experience correcting the common pronunciation mistakes we usually make.

Richard is an awesome teacher. He is patient, thorough and obviously loves what he does. He has helped me a great deal!

C

Richard has taught me a great deal about juggling and prop manipulation. Richard has tutored me in Diablo and 3 ball Juggling. Richard is a great teacher, he has a great sense of what my next step should be. I recommend Richard as he is able to break things down into small increments, which makes learning really enjoyable.

Interview with Richard

QUESTION 01 | 07
Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?
Richard — I was born in Hobart, Australia and have lived in different parts of Australia, Europe, and England. I have spoken English all my life.
QUESTION 02 | 07
2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
Richard — The English language is used by people in so many different countries around the world. There are many different cultures that have adopted this language and influenced its evolution over time. Therefore, it’s difficult to identify one specific person who would be represent of it.

That said, one of my favourite authors is J. K. Rowling and the Harry Potter series is an excellent example of beautiful language. I often recommend this book series to my students as it has a wide range of descriptive words, while still being relative easy to comprehend.

QUESTION 03 | 07
3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?
Richard — ‘Plough through the rough.’

This means to move forwards and turn soil, usually with a machine or tool for farming.

My mother is Hungarian and had some difficulties with the pronunciation of the English language when she first arrived in Australia. She explained to me that English wasn’t a phonetic language and used this phrase to prove her point.

Plough - British spelling of ‘plow’

Through – pronounced similar to ‘threw’
Rough - pronounced similar to ‘ruff’
QUESTION 04 | 07
4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?
Richard — It’s imperative that I can speak this language, as I am currently living in Melbourne, where English is the main language spoken. Also, it’s important for me, because I am an English teacher :)
QUESTION 05 | 07
5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
Richard — English is a relatively easy language to start learning. The grammar structure is fairly simple and uses the ‘subject + verb + object’ form. Also, speakers of Latin-based languages like French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian, have the advantage that there are a lot of similar words.

However, it does become a lot more complicated and intricate, once a student moves into the intermediate-advanced levels. Some of the grammar is very specific and can be confusing when learning it for the first time – for example: passive voice, 2nd and 3rd conditional, or relative clauses. Any grammar structure, if practiced enough, can be successfully integrated into one’s vocabulary. So, with enough dedicated practice, it is possible to master most, if not all, of these more difficult forms.

Pronunciation will always be difficult for students because English isn’t phonetic. However, it’s relatively simple to improve the way you pronounce sounds and words if you regularly practice the drilling exercises that are available.

The areas that seem to be the most difficult for students at higher levels are prepositions, phrasal verbs, and idioms. Some teachers will spend time in their lessons teaching specific examples of these, however, there are SO many to cover that I think that this is something a student can study on their own, via the internet or YouTube videos. For me, I think it is more important to teach grammar structure, study techniques and concepts, so each student has the tools to learn and grow with the language on their own.
QUESTION 06 | 07
6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
Richard — Students don’t generally learn much grammar in school. I do remember briefly looking at adjectives when I was 13 years old, but the majority of my grammar/language knowledge came to me after I became an English teacher. An interesting fact is that English learners often have more grammar knowledge than the average native speaker!

I do remember having great difficulty understanding the present perfect simple grammar tense, while I was studying my CELTA degree. It seemed completely crazy to me that we could have a grammar tense that was almost completely interchangeable with the simple past tense in certain situations. I asked both CELTA instructors for an explanation, but neither could help me understand when to use it. Luckily, there is a lot of English grammar information in the internet and I have since watched countless grammar videos and studied this grammar tense enough to be able to teach it adequately. :)
QUESTION 07 | 07
7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
Richard — I wouldn’t say that travelling has helped me increase my knowledge of English that much. It has helped me understand how different cultures use the language though. Also, I have been really impressed with the high level of English skill and knowledge in most European countries. These days, it’s relatively easy to travel in Europe and speak to almost anyone in English.
