Small, flexible Pottery and Sculpture classes, by highly qualified and very experienced tutor with an architect designed light filled professional artist studio located in middle of inner city Park.

Methodology

These small and highly flexible classes have run in their present form for more than twenty years, under your expert tutor. He has nine years of post secondary training in ceramics and over two decades experience in teaching absolute beginners, through to art educators & professional artists. As indicative of excellence he has received 20 awards, honours and grants from his peers, published over a dozen expert ceramic journal articles and had his work collected by public collections in six countries. Because of this deep reserve of expertise and the small size of the classes, a blend of new (no more than two in any class) and ongoing students, a very high level of customised instruction is provided:

After a brief tour of the studio at the beginning of the first lesson, there will be a short consultation to assess the individual student’s level of experience, ability and aspirations, and the student will be assisted in selecting, or even design a realistic project to immediately start. At the end of the first 2.5 hour lesson, the student will be invited to assess their own experience and progress and decide if they wish to continue or not.

The classes are held within an architect designed, light-filled, open plan inner-city studio, established by six professional artists in 2000. There is a short refreshing tea and coffee break at the middle of the lesson to enable all students to socialise with the other students and any artists working in the studio at that time.

Background

Your tutor has been a “clay-aholic” since a teenage. Formally trained as an art teacher (predominately ceramics), then completed a BA (Visual Arts) at ECU and BA (Fine Arts) first class hours at Curtin University, both majoring in ceramics and sculpture. Currently undertaking a practice led PhD part time at Curtin University on artists networks. Taught these classes privately in the studio for 20 years, and as well as been invited to give over 300 workshops in a dozen counties within 60 primary and secondary schools, 12 universities, and 90 art educator and professional ceramic art groups. As indicative of expertise and standing in the field, led symposia and conferences in Europe and the US, invited to write over 20 technical articles published in half a dozen counties, and be an external assessor of a ceramic based PhD at ANU. As a professional artist he has exhibited in a over 200 exhibitions in a dozen countries, participated in half a dozen biennale, including during the 2017 Venice Biennale. As well as winning many prizes, his work has been acquired by public collections in half a dozen counties, including the Art Gallery of WA and WA state library. His work and techniques feature in dozens of ceramic textbooks. He is a long standing member of West Australian, national and international professional ceramic associations, formally accredited by the Teacher Registration Board of WA and an elected member of the Académie Internationale de la Céramique, Geneva.
