I like to define my teaching method as " the new method", since it is completely different from what I was taught when going to school as a child.
The way I teach is based on the introduction of the topic we are going to cover , but instead of going straight to the point, we are going to chat (or do a little game) about a few images.
Shortly after, I'm going to explain whatever the student need to know about it (grammar, the correct way to use it, pronunciation).
It follows with the assisted practice where I either provide exercises with blank spaces to complete, little fun games to do together, and so on. Let's say that I'm providing the tools to "install" the new language in your head.
We end up the lesson with the free production part where the student is asked to use the new language on his own by writing a short story based on a given assignment or either start a discussion activity together .
Last but not least, homework!
I am a certified TEFL teacher with a diploma in foreign languages, and CAE qualified.
Last year, I volunteered for an association in London (ACAA) that works closely with people from the Middle East who struggle to live in an English speaking country. After only a few months, my students were able to communicate with basic sentences, understand what they were asked, and do their daily chores on their own (go to the post office, applying for jobs, etc...)
I also taught 1 to 1 classes for about six months before leaving the UK, and, I have to say, that the results could be seen a lot quicker (being my focus on one student!) - I would still follow the same teaching method I mentioned above so that student had to reach to the meaning and correct use of the topic instead of me speaking and him/her copying.
The results were just astonishing! People who were not able to speak fluently when saying a simple sentence, were, after only a few lessons, capable of chatting with minimal flaws!
