I have deeply enjoyed history and historiography from high school, where I received top marks, through university, where we studied history from Australia, the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, to the present, where I still read and learn history on a regular basis. In recent years, I have particularly tried to focus on history retold from the perspective of those left out of the traditional view, which is really just anyone who isn't a white, upper-class, European male. This broader and more complex view of history leads to a more nuanced understanding of the past, particularly from a social perspective.
I try to bring this knowledge to the classroom, to help the student understand history contextually and how it is shaped through an interplay of individual personalities and social, economic and political trends. I work to include as much primary evidence as possible and always encourage students to approach both primary and secondary sources critically, considering the bias and intention of the source. If I'm not familiar enough with the particular aspect of history the student is studying, I will do the necessary research to be able to help them competently. I really enjoy history and try to bring my enthusiasm, knowledge and experience to every class I teach.
