While sports fans are celebrating the football World Cup in Qatar this November, which is a huge global event, music fans also have a reason for joy. The end of November is the date of the Aria Music Awards.

Of course, unlike football world cups that happen once every four years, we can listen to music in mp3 or on Spotify at any moment. Yet, learning about a good new album release or artist is not always easy.

Lots of music records come out every day and unless you are a music critic, keeping pace with the Australian music industry can be a huge challenge. Music awards given to the best artists of the year can, thus, be very convenient.

Even if you are not a music fan but just one to find out what music is popular right now, you can simply open the ARIA awards lists of nominees and winners and get that information immediately.

What's more, the winners of the ARIA Music Awards are voted by professionals from the music industry who can really spot original and high-quality records in Australia.

To make your search for good musicians and songs even easier, we at Superprof have decided to also have a look at the winners and nominees of this year's ARIA music awards and share our thoughts with you.

So, let's find out together who the best Australian musicians of 2022 are. You can also read more about music awards in our article.

Let's go

What is new in the ARIA music awards this year?

The ARIA Music Awards were first established by ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) in 1987 and have been given to the best artists every year since then. However, given that the Australian music industry is constantly evolving, the awards don't remain exactly the same over time either.

Namely, the names of several music awards can change through time and that also happened this year. Best Artist became Best Solo Artist, Best Dance/Electronic Release is now used instead of Best Dance Release, Mix Engineer – Best Mixed Album replaced Engineer of the Year and the category Producer of the Year is now called Producer – Best Produced Album.

Following these changes can be especially useful to those who have been watching the ARIA Music Awards in Australia for several years as seeing an award that didn't exist previously may sometimes be confusing.

Another difference from last year was the place where the awards ceremony took place. Even though it still took place in Sydney, it moved from the Taronga Zoo to Hordern Pavillion. Like last year, it was broadcast on Youtube and also by Nine Network on TV.

The show was to be hosted by Natalie Imbruglia and Lewis Capaldi but the latter had finally to withdraw because of schedule issues and was later replaced by G Flip and Ruel. As the Pre-Show, it was hosted by Brooke Boney who also gave out 15 trophies.

Aside from those small modifications, the ARIA Awards ceremony this year was the same wonderful celebration of music as always, so if you didn't watch it on 24 November, we strongly recommend that you look for a recording of it to see all its beauty with your own eyes.

Otherwise, you can also find out more about how the awards ceremony unfolded in our article.

Who won the most ARIA awards this year?

What makes the ARIA awards really important for the Australian music industry is that they cover a whole range of music genres, so whether you want to find the best classical musician, rap artist, pop singer or even jazz or world music group, the awards will help you.

The rule about the number of awards is that there is only one best artist in each award category per year but nothing prevents an artist or a group in Australia from getting several awards in different categories for an album release or a song.

In fact, that's even what often happens in the allocation of the ARIA awards when an artist delivers a particularly outstanding album release. Did anything like that happen this year? Absolutely yes.

The artist who had the most success in obtaining ARIA awards this year was Baker Boy, being recognised as the best artist in 5 different nominations out of six, including Album of the Year, Best Solo Artist and Best Hip-Hip/Rap release.

So, if you are looking for influential records in Australia this year, we definitely recommend to you Baker Boy's album Gela released by the Island Australia record company and Universal Australia.

Who had the most ARIA nominations?

Getting to the ARIA nominee list in any award category is a huge achievement in itself for any artist. But some talented and original performers, like Baker Boy, can be nominated for several awards at the same time.

Baker Boy was lucky enough to win most of the awards he was nominated for this year. Another group, Rüfüs Du Sol was less so, even if it had more nominations.

Out of the seven nominations Rüfüs Du Sol had, the group actually won only one, Producer – Best Produced Album.

That might have been a bit frustrating for the group but still, we all know that Rüfüs Du Sol is one of the best alternative Dance artists here in Australia, so you should definitely check out their songs if you haven't done so yet.

You can go for their new album release Surrender, which is a truly original work of musical art or you can pick an older release, such as Solace or Bloom. We are sure you will enjoy those records.

Award winners

So far, we have only talked about musicians who were nominated for numerous ARIA awards simultaneously. That doesn't mean that the winners of just one award aren't worth knowing.

Of course, ARIA gives awards to many categories of music artists, so we will not be able to describe every award-winning album in detail but we would still like to mention several original musicians from the winners' list who attracted our attention.

Best Group

The best group award this year was given to a very original group from Australia called Amyl and the Sniffers who play punk rock music.

Having a punk group among the award winners is not a very common thing, so even that is enough to stir curiosity. What's more, Amyl and the Sniffers had very serious competitors, including Rüfüs Du Sol who make very decent music.

When we listened to a couple of songs by Amyl and the Sniffers, we were certainly not disappointed. This group makes very catchy songs with creative lyrics, so you will never get bored listening to them and watching their videos.

By the way, Amyl and the Sniffers also won the Best Rock Album award while being nominated for four others, which is a pretty good result, so you should by no means pass by this group.

Michael Gudinski breakthrough artist

As the very name of this award indicates, it is only given to creative and original artists in Australia, so it's not one you can miss.

Indeed, the group that won the award this year is like no other. It is called King Stingray and describes its own music style as Yolŋu surf rock.

Aside from being another rock group to win an ARIA award this year, King Stingray is remarkable for singing some of its songs in Yolŋu Matha, a native language of the North of Australia.

Another artist using that language in his music is, by the way, no one other than Baker Boy, which is a great sign of language diversity in Australian music.

King Stingray's album which is also called King Stingray was released by the Cooking Vinyl record company and is definitely worth listening to from beginning to end.

Best Soul/R&B Release and Best Pop Release

These are two very prestigious ARIA awards as both R&B and Pop are simply the favourite music styles of a very big number of people. Something else they have in common is that this year they were allocated to very young and extremely talented artists.

The winner of the Best Soul/R&B Release award was the famous Kid Laroi, who is only 19 years old, while Best Pop Release went to Budjerah, who is 20.

Both of them were already there at the 2021 awards ceremony. For instance, the Kid Laroi was given the Best Artist award back then and Budjerah won Breakthrough artist. And we hope they will keep delighting the public with their wonderful songs.

If you still haven't heard about the Kid Laroi and Budjerah, we recommend that you look them up on YouTube or Spotify as quickly as possible.

Here were the winners of some of the ARIA Awards 2022 but if you want to discover even more outstanding records, there are plenty of more talented singers in the other categories both among the winners and on the nominee lists. Don't hesitate to check them out when you have time and we are sure you'll love them.

And if you want even more, check out other music awards, about which you can read in our article.
