It does not need to be perfect - or technically correct - to be magic.

Brisbane has a vibrant, energetic music scene. This city's musical energy yielded internationally renowned acts like the BeeGees and Savage Garden. Punk music, Brisbane's signature genre, might be passé in the rest of the world, but we still love an evening at Jolly Bridge or The Foundry.
Brisbane is also a business hub, so many people take singing lessons to improve their public speaking abilities. Learning how to sing helps you develop good posture and helps build your self-confidence. Whether those are the reasons you want singing lessons, or you're after a career in music, these singing classes have what you're looking for.

Brisbane Music Studio (BMS)

Brisbane Music Studio or BMS, as they call themselves, set up shop more than a decade ago. They promote the idea that learning (music) should be fun, and teaching should be done with a passion. In 2017, they left their former location to move into their all-new, purpose-built studio.
You (and your kids, if any) could join the ranks of BMS students. Their Studio accepts students as young as four. You can learn how to sing anything from pop songs to opera. Haven't you always dreamt of singing in Sydney, at the Opera House?

SING Studio
If you want to learn how to sing classical music like opera, jazz and standards from musical theatre, this is the studio for you. Singing coach/studio owner Melissa Gill is a classically trained singer with more than 20 years of experience on stage. She has performed at several Brisbane Jazz Festivals and soloed around the world.
Even as she pursues her Masters' Degree in Vocal Teaching at the Queensland Conservatory, Melissa gives singing lessons. She also hosts workshops about different styles of music you can learn to sing.

When we prowled Adelaide for singing lessons, we found nothing that compares! Melissa works with older teens and adults exclusively.

Sing School
You might confuse this school with the SING Studio above. It's an easy mistake, as both singing outlets are serious about helping their students learn to sing. However, Devina De Donatis and Adam O'Conner, this school's teachers, use different styles of teaching.
The are equal parts coaches and teachers. Beginner students will first learn how to build, improve, and use their voice. Then, Devina and Adam turn into vocal coaches, helping their students find their style, and build performance skills. This school prefers children 10 and older, but occasionally accepts younger singing students. Adults are always welcome.

Wee Make Music

As you might guess from this music school's name, it teaches small children about music, including how to sing. Parents may enrol children as young as three months old, up to six years of age. Taking music lessons that young helps instil and reinforce your child's natural source of rhythm, and boosts cognitive functions.
Wee Make Music opened its doors in 2007, and has been a success ever since. Today, it has three schools across Brisbane.
Each one offers parent participation sessions, for you and your child to learn and play together. For all the music classes we investigated in Western Australia, we could find no comparable classes in Perth.

The Buttery Music School
The Buttery opened its doors in 2014, on owner and drummer Jaymee Watkin's inspiration. Her initiative soon picked up steam. Now, the school offers a large selection of lessons, as well as competitions and performances. As it is a music school, you'll find a range of music lessons, from guitars and drums, to singing.
Chelle Janse van Rensburg leads the school's singing program. She has more than a decade of experience as a performer, singing jazz, Rhythm & Blues (R&B), and pop.

She takes a holistic approach to singing, and shares her mind-body-spirit musical connection with her students. She's keen to teach future vocalists eight years old and up.

GH Singing Studio
Here, you can work one-on-one with a voice coach, or join an ensemble class. If you're serious about a career in music, you might sign up for their musical theory course. Gordon Harris, GH's lead singing teacher, is a former member of the Ten Tenors, with more than 50 years of teaching experience.
This singing school is a bit more formal than some of the others we've previewed. One main difference is that it follows a 12-module program for learning to sing. It starts with a physical assessment of posture, breathing, and vocal strength, and then, moves into vocal training. GH prefers students aged eight and up, though they make exceptions for talented younger singers.

Vocal Manoeuvres Academy

This Academy makes its mission clear: "To teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony". You might know that line from a Coca Cola advert, but it's actually from a 1971 Susan Shirley song. Regardless of the phrase's roots, Vocal Manoeuvres does everything they can to fulfil their stated mission.
This team welcomes aspiring singers of all ages, and all skill levels. They strive to guide their pupils to their singing goals, be they acing Open Mike Night at their local club, or ensemble performance.
If, indeed, you wish to join a choir, this Academy can help you find your way. The choirs in Melbourne have no such partnerships to funnel members their way!

Emma Kate Wilson Voice
Many music schools have an expanded curriculum, teaching drums, guitar, and keyboards, as well as singing. Not so with this singing school. Here, you'll discover how to learn singing, and nothing more. Emma sets the course according to her experience as a teacher and performer with more than 15 years experience singing across all of Australia.

She emphasises vocal health throughout her teaching programs. Emma welcomes singers of all ages and experience levels to lessons, but specialises in teaching adults how to learn to sing. Besides singing lessons, Emma helps people recover from vocal injury. She collaborates with Speech and Language Pathologists to make sure her treatment plans stay on target.

Vincent Music
James Vincent, the founder and CEO of of this music school, is a musical being. He graduated with a double Bachelor of Arts in Music studies in 1996. After spending some time producing and creating music, he pursued his Music Teacher Association membership. His music school is relatively new to Brisbane, but he brings a wealth of experience to his classes.
In many ways, Vincent's teachings top the best singing lessons in Sydney. His school teaches basic music concepts, such as rhythm, pitch, and how posture affects singing abilities. Once students master those, they will begin to train their voice and learn to sing. These singing lessons are open to kids aged 8-11.

Even the most effective singing lessons Perth don't offer such a bonus!
However, that doesn't mean they'll turn away anyone with no singing experience. As long as you have musical goals, these voice coaches can help you reach them.
