Mun Ye-bong (also written Moon Ye-bong) was a very famous Korean actress in the Japanese colonial era of Korea’s history. She is a controversial figure since she starred in several pro-Japanese films. Many of her roles revolved around contemporary ideas of womanhood under the occupation, called the “New Woman.” She often portrayed the daughter of a rural family or a self-sacrificing heroine in drama films. Her performances made her popular among Koreans as a representation of societal sentiment. However, after independence, she migrated to North Korea and became a famous actress in propaganda, eventually becoming a “people’s actress” in 1980.

Known as the “forever girl,” Kim Shin-jae (also written Kim Sin-jae) was celebrated for her innocent and elegant performances in late-colonial and early post-liberation films. Kim became the foundation for the “good wife, wise mother” archetype in mid-20th-century Korean drama. Kim's characters might feel outdated by today’s standards, but at the time, she served the important role of representing the emotional centre of family-centred stories.

Beyond acting, she married director Choi In-kyu, and the two became an influential couple in the South Korean movie industry.

3. Kim Ji‑mee (김지미)

Top Works:

  • The Sea Knows (1961) – Han Kyung-hee
  • Promise of the Flesh (1975) – Sook-young
  • Yumo (1971) – Lee Jeong-ok

In her youth, Kim Ji-mee earned a reputation as “the Elizabeth Taylor of Korea” due to her glamorous image and work in melodramas and romances. Kim became a film star in the 1960s as a top box-office draw, effectively creating pop culture in society with her roles. Like others in the Madame Freedom era of Korean film, Kim’s roles usually saw her as a woman caught between tradition and modernity, struggling to reconcile her beliefs and desires. Anyone interested in the history of Korean film and culture should watch Kim Ji-mee’s melodramatic storytelling in the golden age.

Choi Eun-hee was hands down one of the most influential actresses in the 1950s-1960s golden age of Korean cinema. She often collaborated with famous director and husband Shin Sang-ok. A master of drama, her characters were not limited to one archetype. Instead, she portrayed all kinds of women, from prostitutes among foreign soldiers to grieving widows to loving mothers.

She and Shin were famously kidnapped by North Korea in the late 1970s and were forced to make propaganda films. They luckily managed to escape, and now their story is the subject of its own film, The Lovers & the Despot (2016). Choi is a pivotal actress both for her influence on screen and in cinema, and as a historical figure.

Yoon (also spelled Yun Jeong-hie) was known as one of the “troika” (the three main actresses in the 1960s), along with Moon Hee and Nam Jeong-im.
