English is a co-official language in India so many language learners wonder why they should take Hindi classes. Besides the obvious answer - to learn how to speak Hindi, this language has a lot going for it. More than six million people speak Hindi or a closely related language; it's the fourth most spoken language in the world. If we add Urdu speakers, Hindi unseats Spanish as the third most-spoken language.

Why should we add Urdu - the language of Pakistan, a country in the so-called Hindi Belt. This Belt comprises 11 regions across northern India where populations speak roughly the same language. The main difference between Urdu and Hindi is how it's written. Hindi uses the Devanagari script and Urdu adopted the Nastaliq style of writing.

Written Hindi alone poses a challenge. The Devanagari script is elegant and flowing, with 14 vowels and 34 consonants. One hundred and twenty languages use this script; it's the fourth most widely used writing system in the world.

These are just a few of the reasons you might have to study Hindi. We could cite many others, ranging from the benefits of being multilingual to the joys of Bollywood without subtitles. We'd rather hear your reasons for wanting to learn Hindi, though. Won't you tell us in the comments section?

To help you start on your Hindi learning journey, we scoured Adelaide and surrounding areas for the best Hindi lessons. Lucky you, living in Adelaide! You have more access to Hindi lessons than language students in Perth.

Hindi Classes for Kids

Those in the know realise that being bilingual delivers a wealth of cognitive benefits. Speaking more than one language also helps you expand your worldview and understand their own language better. As the English writer, Geoffrey Willans once said: "You can never understand one language until you understand at least two.".

Campuses across Australia take this philosophy to heart. It's why the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) offers school-leaving exams in multiple languages, Hindi included. It's also why we find independent Hind classes across Australia.

Adelaide is extra lucky in this regard. This city is home to the Saraswati Community School, which offers Hindi classes to children at no charge. The director, Ms. Dayawata Pandey, holds Hindi classes at the Goodwood Primary School on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. You may also register your child for Sanskrit lessons; classes are on Sundays, from 11am to 1pm.

But the Saraswati Community School doesn't just break out the books and begin pronunciation drills. These classes teach about Indian culture and history, too. Each learning session starts with 30 minutes of yoga, meditation and contemplation. Study time includes all aspects of language learning: reading and writing, speaking and listening.

This community-based learning initiative is an outgrowth of the Vishva Hindu Parishad of Australia, with support from the World Hindu Council. Besides hosting Hindi classes for children, they sponsor many community activities to introduce Adelaideans to the richness of Indian culture. When you attend their next event, you might ask if they can help you find a Hindi tutor for adult Hindi learners.

Find a Hindi Teacher in a Language School

Some people believe that it's easier for kids to pick up a new language because their brains are in 'learning mode'. Millions of adult language learners would beg to differ. If you only knew how many students were taking Hindi classes in Sydney alone, you too would call that 'theory' bunk. We found far more than one busy Hindi teacher in Adelaide, which further quashes that rumour.

Across Australia, Listen and Learn outlets promote language learning for students of all ages. This global educational concern got its start just over 80 years ago, when it reprinted and distributed older textbooks for self-study initiatives. Since then, their strategies have evolved to include one-to-one and online teaching.

Your Listen & Learn Hindi tutor will first cover the basics, what's known as 'survival' Hindi. These language skills are just enough to get you by if your trip to India is imminent. You'll then move beyond basic phrases to develop your Hindi vocabulary and grammar, which is similar to English grammar.

You may have a special purpose for learning Hindi. For instance, you might embark on a business venture in northern India, Pakistan or Bangladesh. You could take Business Hindi with Listen & Learn, one-to-one or with a small group of colleagues. Your Hindi for Business tutor may even come to your office for group lessons.

Or you might need a bit of coaching to help you prepare for your Hindi proficiency exam. Listen & Learn can help you hone your language skills ahead of your Avant STAMP ordeal. They have all the latest revision materials and long experience mentoring test takers like you.

Learn with a Private Hindi Teacher

A language company like Listen & Learn has nothing on learning Hindi with a private Hindi tutor. Indeed, it makes little sense to contract with a Melbourne-based Hindi teacher when Adelaide has such a vibrant Hindu community. Singh, a website for the Indian business community in Australia, lists nine Hindi teachers in and around Adelaide.

Mrs. Manju offers Hindi classes at all levels of ability from Beginner Hindi to Advanced. She has 10 years of tutoring experience and a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She pegs her tuition fees at $20, no matter what the level of instruction is.

Mrs. Manju's offer is standard for the Hindi teachers who advertise on the Singh Business page. What's more, getting involved in the Adelaide Hindu community allows you to immerse yourself in the culture and language of India. Tutors like Mrs. Manju will likely keep you up to date on the community's events and celebrations.

Unfortunately, the Singh Business page is rather limited in its information about their Hindi teachers. By contrast, the website Amazing Talker gives each Hindi tutor a full page to build their profile. This site's welcome page presents snapshots of each tutor, along with a short biography and what each tutor charges per lesson. Should any tutor's profile interest you, you may click on their name to read all about them.

This site works a lot like the Superprof tutoring platform. Superprof allots each tutor a full page to describe their education and experience teaching Hindi. You will also see, at a glance, how many students each Superprof tutor has mentored and their star rating. Superprof encourages students to provide feedback on their tutors to help other students choose the best tutor for them.

In Adelaide, Superprof has three tutors ready to give Hindi lessons face-to-face or online. They charge an average of $15 per lesson and all three Superprof Hindi tutors in Adelaide offer their first lesson free. All three Superprof Hindi tutors in Adelaide are native Hindi speakers, too. So you're more likely to pick up 'street' Hindi - as opposed to what Hindi textbooks and formal language courses teach.

If you're looking for Hindi lessons in Brisbane you can take lessons with native speakers on Superprof here.

Take Hindi Classes Online

As long as you're considering Hindi classes online, why not connect with a Hindi teacher in India, Pakistan or Bangladesh? The technology we have at our disposal lets us reach across the world. You may connect with a Hindi tutor in Los Angeles just as well as with a mentor in Australia.

In the internet's early days, dial-up connections made voice-over-internet protocols (VoIP) useful but unreliable. As broadband grew widely available, the internet became more functional and video chat became the new standard. It didn't take long for enterprising souls to see that online tutoring could give millions of people access to learning.

Superprof is a pioneer of such an enterprise, meeting the demand for online lessons that many other platforms couldn't keep up with. Italki is another platform that stood the test of time and demand. This learning initiative also lets students choose their lesson format and the tutors they want lessons with.

Taking Hindi classes online offers you several advantages besides learning Hindi from teachers around the world. Video conferencing platforms like Skype and Zoom have screen-sharing capabilities; you can show your tutor your work and they can show you worksheets and images.

Zoom has a whiteboard built into its platform so you or your tutor can write on-screen during your lessons. Best of all, you can record your online learning sessions and play them back as you revise for your next session.

Your Hindi tutor online will use various media to keep your Hindi classes engaging. For instance, you might watch clips of Bollywood films and talk about them or discover Hindi music. You may study Indian cuisine from your online Hindi teacher, too. That way, you can master the Hindi names of all the ingredients while you learn how to make those dishes.

But only if that's the direction you want or need your lessons to take. Hindi Superprofs in Adelaide are ready to tailor their lessons to your learning needs, using textbooks to guide your studies. But why limit yourself to Hindi tutors in Adelaide? Superprof has Hindi tutors all over Australia.
