These days, it seems India is everywhere in the news. First, it was the highly-anticipated BRICS summit in South Africa. India, a founding member of the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa partnership is helping usher in a new era of economic development and cooperation.

Chandrayaan's moon landing overshadowed the BRICS summit, momentous as it was. India's space program achieved a feat that only three other nations had managed before. Indeed, the media was particularly gleeful in posing India's lunar success against Russia's rocket blunder. Who knows how far India's space program will go?

As I write this, India is hosting the 2023 Group of 20 (G20) summit. The G20 represents the world's largest and/or most productive economies. They tout their mission as being the primary venue for international economic and financial cooperation. But so far, the biggest news from this summit is India's possible name change.

Whether we continue to call this nation India or its historic name, Bharat, there's no denying this country's on the move. That's why savvy language learners across Australia are doing the smart thing: begging their browsers for "Hindi lessons near me". Just in time, Superprof delivers this guide to the best Hindi lessons in Australia's major cities.

Learn Hindi in Sydney

A boy wearing a blue ballcap, opened blue checked shirt over a white tee-shirt and dark trousers has a red and black backpack slung over his shoulder as he walks through a green area, smiling.

For decades, as families immigrated to Australia, native Hindi speakers despaired over their children's lack of opportunity. They wanted their heirs to know the language, customs and traditions of their homeland. Such education was not available in Sydney, so these enterprising mothers started their own Hindi school.

In 1987, the Indo-Aust Bal Bharathi Vidyalaya-Hindi School (IABBV) welcomed its first students. Today, this school teaches children and adults how to speak, read and write in Hindi. IABBV teachers also tutor Hindi after hours and on weekends.

IABBV is not the only chance you have to learn Hindi in Sydney. The South Asian Australian Association (SAAA) also teaches adults and children how to speak Hindi. This group initially focused on promoting cultural aspects such as dance, music and art. But it didn't take long for them to establish Hindi language courses.

So popular are Hindi classes in Sydney that even the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) has developed a Hindi course of study for public schools. Each lesson is structured like any other curriculum subject. Students are held to the same standards as any other NESA-authority course, even though these Hindi classes take place outside of the standard school framework.

Learning how to speak, read and write in Hindi is your best introduction to this ancient culture. More than that, studying Hindi broadens your worldview and opens areas of opportunity you might not otherwise have access to. Sydneysiders are lucky; they have the broadest access to Hindi language classes of all the cities in Australia.

Hindi Classes Near Me In Brisbane

You might wonder how speaking Hindi will give you more access to opportunities. After all, native English speakers have a global advantage. English is the lingua franca of business, science, aviation and many other fields. Around the world, you'll never be lost if you can speak English.

Across India, English is present even at snack time. Note these treats from a corner shop in India, for example. Why else would snacks in India all have English writing on them?

An array of brightly coloured packages of snacks hangs in a shop by the entrance.

Those snacks may come in traditional Indian flavours but noshing on them hardly delivers an authentic Indian experience. It's like watching a slick Bollywood production but missing half the action because you're limited to reading subtitles. And how much of the story are you losing in those translations?

You won't have to wonder about that if you took Hindi classes near me in Brisbane. The Queensland Association of Hindustani Language School, Culture and Welfare throws its doors open to Hindi language learners of all ages. Like the IABBV in Sydney, this Hindi Language School's curriculum has official approval.

Queensland is remarkable for another aspect of Hindi learning, as well. The University of Queensland is one of the very few institutional outlets for Hindi lessons. Across Australia, other universities offer non-degree courses in French, German and other 'popular' languages; not Hindi. Our investigation concludes that the University of Queensland's Hindi learning program is one of the best sources for learning Hindi in Brisbane.

Learn Hindi Online Melbourne

A boy wearing a white sleeveless knit vest with blue trim over a dark blue shirt and dark trousers walks arm in arm with a smaller boy who wears a bright red shirt and dark trousers.

As the Indian diaspora frets over the 'westernisation' of its youth, two international language concerns with offices in Melbourne strive to make Hindi lessons available to all.

Language Trainers and Listen & Learn offer the chance to learn Hindi online across Australia. However, in Melbourne, these businesses have brick-and-mortar facilities. Hindi learners may sign up for one-to-one or two-to-one private lessons at either facility.

These two commercial ventures have a winning formula. They tailor their Hindi lessons to their students' needs and goals. For instance, let's say a Melbourne-based industry just established ties with a firm in Jaipur. The Melbourne company might contact Language trainers for a Business Hindi course before sending a delegation to India to formalise relations.

These language learning concerns can also help university students. Imagine such a Hindi speaker preparing for graduate studies at the university in Agra. They might need help preparing for their Avant STAMP, the Hindi language certification exam. This is another of Listen & Learn's specialities.

But these commercial outlets are not the only opportunities to learn Hindi in Melbourne. The Council of Adult Education has an excellent program for grownups to learn Hindi. And if you want your child to learn the language of northern India, you might enrol them in The Grange, which boasts a Prep-12 Hindi learning program.

Learn Hindi in Adelaide

Rambling across Australia in search of Hindi lessons, we encountered the same phenomenon everywhere. Newly arrived members of Hindu communities despaired over their children's Hindi education. These parents want their children to know their roots.

In Adelaide, the Saraswati Community School addresses that concern. Like Hindi schools in other Australian cities, the founders conceived Saraswati as a way to connect Hindu children to their heritage. Thus, classes start with yoga and traditional prayers. And then, the books come out.

Three young students sit in colourful plastic chairs, bent over a low table as they do schoolwork. At the end of the row of tables, the teacher sits, talking with the last student in the row.

The Saraswati School is tailored to the Hindu community's needs but these teachers welcome all students interested in Hindu language and culture. Indeed, Saraswati partners with the Hindu community to bring cultural events to Adelaideans. So if you're looking for quality Hindi lessons, you might catch their next event and ask if they can help you find a qualified Hindi tutor.

Adelaide's Hindu community is particularly rich, as evidenced by the Singh Business Page. This website advertises Hindu business interests of all types, including private Hindi teachers. You might learn Hindi online with any of the nine Hindi tutors who advertise on the Singh page.

Compared to the Australian cities we've toured so far, language learners looking for "Hindi lessons near me" in Adelaide will find meagre results. That doesn't mean you have no place to learn Hindi in this city though. We discovered many ways language students have found Hindi lessons in Adelaide.

Learn Hindi Online in Perth

Two young children, both dressed in bright red clothing with blue and white accents, pose and smile at the camera.

Of all the major Australian cities, Perth offers the least amount of possibilities to learn Hindi. We were hard-pressed to find any Hindi language schools for children or adults. Likewise, we found no Hindi offerings in public schools; not even at the University of Western Australia.

For all that, Perth is home to a vibrant Hindu community. The Perth Hindu Temple is a lovely facility and, at times, a hive of activity. That occasional hubbub deepens the mystery of minimal places to learn Hindi in this city. Still, we found ways around that.

Because of the lack of formal Hindi classes in Perth, language students are better served when they learn Hindi online. They may choose a Hindi learning program from the Melbourne-based concerns described above. Or they might choose a Hindi tutor from among the listings on Amazing Talker or Preply.

Both of those platforms help learners find private online tutors that can teach them Hindi reading, writing and speaking. There is also Italki, which provides a similar platform but with more of a sense of community, where students help each other learn their native languages.

We must confess our bias, though. The Superprof Hindi tutor community is nearly 16,000 strong; we have Hindi tutors all over the world - even in Perth. Our two Perthling Hindi Superprofs are available for lessons face-to-face or online. Following the Superprof model, they will tailor their lessons to your needs and learning goals.

Around the world, Superprof Hindi tutors help language students master Hindi speech and the elegant Devanagari writing system. They infuse their lessons with cultural insights and pave the way towards your bilingual future.

You may have a dearth of formal Hindi lessons in Perth but you don't lack access to Hindi lessons online. Thus, we conclude that it's not hard to find Hindi lessons in Perth; your new Hindi teacher is as close as your phone!
