Want to start watching The Masked Singer, but not sure what to expect?
The Masked Singer Australia is a popular celebrity talent competition show where famous people don elaborate, full-body costumes and masks to conceal their identities. Each week, the masked celebrities take the stage and perform songs, with the judges and audience trying to guess who is behind the mask through clues and vocal performances. It's an exciting guessing game that keeps viewers engaged as they try to figure out which celebrities are singing on stage. The show features an element of mystery combined with incredible visual and vocal performance entertainment, making it a fun event for everyone involved!
In this guide to understanding the premise and intricacies of The Masked Singer Australia, you’ll be introduced to what you need to know about this exciting reality talent competition so you can keep up with what’s going on and enjoy with your friends!
How Does The Masked Singer Australia Work?
The premise of The Masked Singer is based on the original South Korean television programme called King of Mask Singer. In the Australian version, 12 or 13 celebrities wear themed costumes that completely disguise their identities so that neither the audience nor the judges or staff on set including the host know who they are until it’s time for the reveal. Their voices are even altered (when they aren’t singing) to disguise their identity!
Security around guarding the identities of the masked singers is airtight, involving non-disclosure agreements, clearing the set of all non-essential personnel while the celebrities mask up and de-mask, magnetic pouches for audience members’ phones (to prevent them from taking photos and video or posting online), and security by former ASIO officials.

The entire contest is filmed in front of a live studio audience, but the episodes are filmed in advance; the show is not broadcast live. This way, the secret identities of the celebrities are maintained until the big reveal when the episode is broadcast.
When the singers are revealed, the audience and non-essential staff are removed to avoid spoilers until the episode premieres. Only the judges, the host, and a few stage members are around to see who is under the mask in real time. (Notice that the audience is not shown once the mask comes off!)
In the first few episodes, the contestants are introduced with a video interview - in their costumes with altered voices of course! They give cryptic hints about their true identity in the pre-recorded video, before coming out to perform their version of a popular song. After the performance, the 4 judges are able to ask questions to try to get one more hint at the singer’s identity. Then they guess who the singer might be, just for fun.
The rest of the masked singers in the round/episode perform, and the studio audience and guessing panel will vote for their favourite performance. The singer with the least votes is made to reveal themselves (to a near-empty studio). Everyone, apart from the judges and host, finds out who the masked singer is once the episode premiers on television; it's a nationwide revelation!

The point of the show is to provide fun entertainment that gets people talking and hypothesizing with each other; who do you think the masked singer is?
