The history of the ARIA music awards in Australia

Like with any other competition or cultural event, if you want to learn more about the ARIA music awards and understand why it's among the best and most prestigious music awards in Australia now, it can be useful to have a look at its history.

First of all, the ARIA awards is an event put on by ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) in Sydney. ARIA is a trade association that represents the interests of the recording industry in Australia.

It was established by six important record companies in the 1970s, namely  EMI, Festival, CBS, RCA, WEA and Universal, and is now an essential player in the field of music in the country.

The ARIA music awards were put in place by ARIA in 1987 and have been handed out every year to the best artists in Australia since then.

Of course, ARIA was not the first organisation to create a music award in Australia. In fact, another influential award ceremony in the 1980s was Countdown Music and Video Awards and it was even produced in collaboration with ARIA.

However, ARIA stopped that partnership in 1986 after a fight broke out between music fans at the Countdown event. It was at that point that ARIA decided to hold its own Australian music award ceremony and their project quickly became very successful.

Nowadays, getting an ARIA award for an original album can be of huge importance for an artist's career. ARIA winners and nominees' sales increase very quickly and they are likely to release numerous other CDs in Australia in the future.

ARIA music charts

Aside from the ARIA music awards given each year to Australian artists, ARIA is also famous for its music charts. They are the most important music charts in the country that show the best-selling musical artists of the moment.

ARIA updates its music charts every week and they become the basis of the awards by end of the year.

Getting an album on the ARIA charts upon its release is the dream of any original artist, group or orchestra in the music industry in Australia, and the charts can be a great source of information to discover talented Australian artists alongside the end-of-year awards.

How are the ARIA awards nominees and winners selected?

Of course, the most important condition to get be nominated for an ARIA award in Sydney is to be a good original artist, group or orchestra able to release a noteworthy music album. However, just that is not enough.

One of the strictest requirements for ARIA awards nominees is to have released their album within a specified period of the year. If the release came out earlier or later, the album will not be eligible for the ARIA music awards of that year.

Another tough requirement has to do with Australian citizenship. In fact, all ARIA awards nominees and winners, whether it's an individual or a group, must be Australian citizens or have permanent resident status in the country.

In addition to the aforementioned ones, there are also requirements for each award that have to be met. For example, to become the Album of the year, an album release must have been listed on the ARIA chart for a certain period during the year.

The eligibility requirements are not easy to meet for numerous artists from the Australian music industry, so making it to the nominee list is an achievement of its own.

Peer-voting selection system

Once the nominee list has been drawn up, ARIA kicks off a voting process, whose goal is to determine the best artist and album release in each award category.

The particularity of the ARIA awards is that the winners are selected by the ARIA Board with representatives from the Australian music industry and not the general public.

As a result, to win an ARIA award, an artist needs to deliver a truly remarkable album release of high technical quality and artistic value.
