Did you know that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation - UNESCO, the same organisation that promotes World Heritage sites has a branch called the Creative Cities Network? Within that network is a program called City of Music, which recognises extraordinary musical activity and creation, such as hosting music festivals and structures for music education, including orchestras and choirs.

Wouldn't you know it? Adelaide tops their list of Cities of Music. Granted, that might be due to alphabetical order, at least in part. Auckland also features on that list, five spaces down. Still, there's no denying Adelaide's rich musical culture, from wave-making bands like Double Dragon to our many festivals.

Even if you have no intention of participating in the Adelaide music scene other than as a spectator, you can still benefit from taking singing lessons. Read on to discover how.

Take Singing Lessons in a Music School

Did you know that there are teachers in music schools, not just giving but taking lessons? Politicians, CEOs and other public speakers also take singing lessons. Not because they harbour a secret desire to set the world on fire with their vocal stylings but because singing lessons help you develop the skills that make you an effective public speaker.

Here is where you can find out about the best singing lessons in Sydney.

Whether speaking to an audience or singing to them, you have to know how to modulate your voice, control your breath and project your vocals strongly enough that people in the back of the room can hear you. Microphones help with that to an extent, of course, but if your voice squeaks or breaks as you talk, your speech won't have the authority needed to make your message believable.

People all over Australia take singing lessons whether they plan on a career as a public speaker or just want to hedge their bets that, at some point, they might be called on to address an audience. Either way, it's best to be prepared so let's explore the finest facilities to learn how to sing in Adelaide.

Novar Music Learning Centre

Singing is not something best learned in a group setting; it would be far too easy for bolder students to drown out the shier ones. Or for more talented singers to feel held back while the rest of the group struggles to hit the notes they reach with ease. That's why Novar offers only one-on-one singing lessons to students from age nine.

For the youngest students and beginners, lessons are only 30 minutes long. During that time, your singing coach will guide you through exercises to strengthen your larynx and teach you proper breathing techniques. As you progress, your time in class may stretch up to 45 minutes. Note that lessons won't last more than one hour; it's not a good idea to stress your vocal cords.

The cost of singing lessons depends on the student's age, the length of the lesson, level of training already achieved and where you take lessons, whether online or any of the five Novar Centre locations throughout the city.

Singing Lessons With Learning Through Music

Learning Through Music or LTM is a unique initiative that brings music education to Adelaide schools and teaches singing from its five studios in the city. If you were looking for singing lessons for your school-aged child, you might enquire if the LTM program is available as a part of their curriculum; if it isn't, you could petition for it.

However, if you wanted singing lessons for yourself or someone not in school, you could take lessons at an LTM studio, where students as young as four years old are accepted. Once on solid technical footing - breathing, posture, knowing when to use head voice and so on, students are encouraged to select their favourite music genres to continue honing their singing skills.

Such stylings include:

  • jazz vocalising
  • contemporary singing
  • pop vocals
  • classical singing
  • voice coaching through singing
  • exam preparation for the Australian Music Exam Board
  • voice theory

Studio lessons are generally only 30 minutes long but can be extended on request. You may take lessons in small groups so, if you and a couple of your mates want to have a go together, that would be perfectly fine. The cost of lessons with LTM depends on which studio you take your lessons at; obviously, lessons given in school are free.

Your voice coach will also consider how advanced you are and how much training you've already had, as well as how many lessons per week you'd like and how long you prefer each lesson to last before quoting a per-lesson price. However, you might enjoy their free trial lesson before you sign anything.

How much would you bet that singing studios in Melbourne have a similar taster lesson offer?

Learn How to Sing with a Choir

In this article's introduction, we noted that Adelaide is a UNESCO City of Music in part because of its many choirs. If you've already mastered singing fundamentals, why not continue developing your singing skills with one of our city's choirs?

You might find your singing brethren among the Adelaide Harmony Choir, whose website specifies that one of their aims is to provide a place for singers to participate in performances. You might not yet feel up to performing but this group's conviviality virtually guarantees that you won't feel awkward among them for long.

And besides, how 0ff-putting can that group be when their third stated aim is to encourage people to sing?

Adelaide has so many active choirs that we need two groups to track them: Choir Central and the Adelaide Choral Network. Directing yourself to either (or both!) of their webpages treats you to an expansive directory of singing groups that embrace all types of music, from acapella to women-only choirs. Naturally, there are men-only choirs in Adelaide, too.

After the last couple of years we've endured, we need community and fellowship more than ever. People from here to Perth are joining choirs; the music is uplifting but communing with those who share our passion for harmony helps us move on from the isolation we've lived under for far too long.

Singing Courses Online

Plenty of people turn to YouTube to search for tutorials on just about anything from plumbing to, yes, even singing. The best part is that such education doesn't cost a thing but the downside is that you get no personalised instruction or feedback on your progress. How would you know that you're doing the breathing exercises right or singing your way through vocal scales without anyone there to tell you?

And worst of all: how do you know you're not harming your vocal cords while trying to hit notes that are out of your vocal range?

The bottom line is that if you want to learn how to sing, you need guidance. If you'd rather (or you have to) take singing lessons at home, taking singing courses online is one of your two options.

Skillshare offers one of the least expensive beginner singing courses. For $16, you can learn warm-up exercises and how to protect your voice, how to breathe and use your breath to deliver powerful notes and how to control your voice. Granted, this is an instructional video, much in the same vein that you could key into on no-cost video platforms but this 17-lesson course sponsored by the award-winning GB Voice Academy segues into a more expansive (and more costly) lesson series.

You could also locate a private singing coach to give you lessons online, like my mate in Brisbane did.

Develop Your Singing Voice with a Private Singing Coach

As you've noted throughout this article, most voice coaches prefer one-on-one lessons so they can focus on their pupils' efforts without anyone being drowned out. In a sense, then, many of the singing lessons highlighted are private lessons but we want to talk about the type of singing coach that will come to your house as well as invite you into their studio.

Private singing coaches do not follow any school or academy's guidelines. They work more on instinct; quickly tapping into each pupil's capabilities and starting lessons from there instead of rehashing the basics. Along the way, they boost budding singers' confidence levels, inspiring them to take their voices to different genres and ranges.

Superprof's eight Adelaide singing coaches excel at all of that and more. You might enjoy singing lessons with Kayler, a professional musician who teaches singing to all ages and at all levels or Michael, who is a member of the Australian Association of Teachers (singing). You could even take beatboxing lessons with Isuru, either at yours or his, or online.

Adelaide, our favourite City of Music, offers you many ways to become the singer you always knew you could be. Even if you don't want to sing before an audience, Adelaide singing teachers can help you find your self-confidence - and your voice. But you should also find out where aspiring singers go for singing lessons in Sydney.
