Even people who have never been to Melbourne have an idea of how rich and diverse the area's music culture is. It gave the world Men At Work, Kylie Minogue and Dame Olivia Newton-John, among other international artists. The list of songs about Melbourne is long, and songs with 'Melbourne' in the title number in the double digits.
Brisbane, a city filled with studios where one can learn to sing, is known for its punk music heritage. Melbourne is famous for electronic dance music (EDM). Neither genre does much to showcase the soaring vocals of someone who spent years learning how to sing. That's the type of singing you can learn at these studios and music schools:

Epiphany Vocal Studio

At this studio, coaches personalise their classes to their clients' needs. Let's say that you just landed a public relations job with one of Melbourne's largest corporations. Public speakers take singing lessons to improve their pronunciation and rate of speech. As well as learning to project their voice and developing good posture, these lessons are great confidence boosters.
Those are a few benefits you get from learning how to sing. Lisa, Epiphany's singing coach, teaches beginner singers how to find their voice, and shows advanced singers how to sing better.
Also, Epiphany hosts workshops to discuss the challenges singers face. She limits her student pool to adults who have some singing experience.

AML Golden Voice Studios
Antonio Maria Lancuba, this studio's AML, teaches people how to sing using the Natural Vocal Technique. This technique expands singers' vocal abilities by teaching them how their body - breath, larynx and mouth, creates music. Each vocalist will first learn about vocal mechanics, before embarking on voice training.
Because this studio's teachings are so technical, AML contends they're not suitable for children under eight.

However, he's happy to welcome dedicated child singers, as well as teens and adults. He prefers teaching students who are serious about their art, much like the Sydney voice coaches we've met.

The House of Voice
AML is rather adamant that his school is not for teaching 'karaoke vocals'. By contrast, the House of Voice head coach, Alisha Gartland, maintains that it's your voice, and you can sing where and what you like. Here, you can learn how to sing jazz and showtunes, as well as rock and pop.
This singing school has developed an entire program for children as young as eight to begin singing. If your young vocalist plans to undergo the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) ordeal, House of Voice can help them prepare. They have no upper age limit, either, much like the singing lessons on Superprof.

Melbourne Voiceworks

You likely know who Lisa Flynn is. She represented Australia at the 2017 World Championship of Performing Arts, in Los Angeles. You may also have heard her recordings, or caught her in a live performance. Now, she directs the Melbourne Voiceworks singing program.
Voiceworks offers lessons to kids, teens and adults. Like the best singing lessons Brisbane we reviewed, Lisa makes sure to blend music theory lessons with vocal training. She does so in the right measures, so that her youngest pupils don't get bored or frustrated with their lessons.
Recently, Voiceworks added group lessons for kids to their curriculum, to make learning how to sing more engaging for them.

Armstrong's School of Singing
Located in the heart of the Melbourne Central Business District, Armstrong invites teens 13 and older on a journey of discovery. This school will treat them to a deep understanding of how their bodies work when they sing. And then, it will teach them how to access their full vocal range, to sing the songs they like the most.
They do the same for adults, especially for absolute beginners. If you have any singing experience, they will make sure you're following the best vocal practices before building on the skills you have.

Since opening in 2012, head singing teacher Adam Wood has made it his mission to guide his students to the joys of singing. He invites you to join him on his quest.

RockAbility Vocal Studio
Singing classes as far away as Perth do not offer the fun and excitement learning to sing at RockAbility offers. As this studio's name suggests, students can learn how to sing rock and pop music. More importantly, students learn singing and vocal health fundamentals. Those include warmup exercises, breathing techniques, and how to connect head and chest voice.
Katherine Dolphin, RockAbility's lead vocal coach, has more than 20 years experience in the music industry. The studio opened its doors 20 years ago, and has refined its teachings to produce the ultimate in rock singing education. RockAbility welcomes aspiring singers aged 16 and older, from absolute beginners to experienced rockers.

Vox Singing Academy

You might think this academy merely hit on a great name for a vocal studio, as 'vox' is Latin for 'voice'. But that's not the case. This singing school takes its name from its founder and director, Peter Vox - a well-named voice instructor, if ever there was one. Peter opened his Academy in 1993, after a successful career as a singer.
Today, Peter and his crew of singing teachers guide children, teens and adults to the voice results they aim for. They coach beginner singers, as well as established vocal artists who want to expand their musical range.
They structure their lessons around students' goals, emphasising vocal health throughout. Besides helping students learn to sing, the Academy gives them room to shine with Student Concert performances.

The Music Gym
By the sounds of things, singing students here are in for a workout. That's true, but only in the most fun and engaging ways. The Music Gym founders, all musicians themselves, created a community where people can share their passion for music and artistic expression.
The Gym's singing courses are open to adults only. These coaches welcome any adult, from absolute beginner to seasoned stage veterans. Here, you'll find an eight-week course where you'll singing learn fundamentals.

Those include breathing and posture, of course. But also, you'll learn vocal placements, tone and vocal onsets, and various expressive techniques.

Melbourne Voice Therapy
All of the singing schools we've featured so far focus on learning how to learn to sing. Most of them include vocal health instruction, to some degree. But, where does one go if their voice needs more than basic exercises to return it to health? That's Melbourne Voice Therapy's niche.
If you have issues with your voice, you must address them before you can begin to sing. Rebecca Lewis Fox, this centre's director, will first assess your voice, and then work with you to 'fix' it. She will then teach you how to use your instrument - your voice, safely and effectively. She welcomes professional and aspiring singers, as well as public speakers suffering from voice strain.

Total Voice Studio

Singing teacher Darren Wicks has 30 years of experience in music. He plays jazz piano and sings, and he's a choir director, too. He's taught music in high schools and universities, and worked on community music projects - theatre, choirs, and amateur groups. He's a lot like a singing teacher we met in Adelaide, totally dedicated to music.
Anyone wondering how to learn singing would find themselves well-met in this studio. Darren presents an "Are you a good fit?" decision tree. If you are over 14 years old, want to sing pop, jazz or other contemporary music styles, and are passionate about singing, you're a good fit.
Likewise, if you have singing experience but want to learn how to sing better, this studio is for you.
