Economics can be really tricky. While it's a really fascinating subject, there are so many abstract concepts, different schools of thought, and mathematics that it's hardly surprising that some people decide a private economics tutor could help them.

You don't need to be on an economics course to work with a private economics tutor, though, as anyone who wants to learn more about economics can hire one.

In Brisbane, and across Australia, there are tutors who can help students in a variety of subjects such as history, biology, maths, English, chemistry, physics, engineering, business studies, and even economics. They can help students with their WACE exams, university classes, or even just professionals who need more education in economics for their own professional development.

Private economics tutors aren't free, however, and before you start working with one, you'll need to work out whether you really need one, what you'll need your tutor for, find suitable tutors, and ultimately, choose the tutor that's right for you.

Work Out Whether You Need a Private Tutor or Not

If you don't need a private tutor, then you shouldn't hire one. Before you make that decision, there are a few things you need to consider.

These are the two main things to think about before you start looking for private economics tutors.

What Are Your Goals?

Ask yourself what you want to learn about economics, what you need to learn, and why you'd want a private tutor to help you.
What do you need to learn about economics to achieve your goals?

What Are You Looking for in a Private Economics Tutor?

Are you taking classes in economics and need a tutor to help you study or will your private tutor be the only one teaching you about economics?

The kind of tutoring you get will depend on what you're getting a tutor for. Are you trying to catch up with your other economics lessons, preparing for an exam, learning new skills for your career, or just learning about economics for fun?

Make a note of your overall goals and your learning objectives before you start speaking to tutors because these will be the kinds of things they ask you.

What to Look for in a Private Economics Tutor

Before you start searching for your private economics tutor, you need to know what you're looking for in a tutor.

Every person will have their own criteria and prioritise said criteria in their own way, but for us, these are some of the things you should be looking for when searching for your private economics tutor.

Expertise

With any private tutor, you'll need them to be an expert in their field or at least know more about it than you.

If you're learning basic economics, you won't need somebody with lots of expertise, but how much expertise they have is an important consideration.

Qualifications

Not every private tutor will need qualifications for what they do and even in the case of economics, a private tutor mightn't need any formal qualifications, especially if they have real-world experience.

However, qualifications are a quick and easy way to check that any potential private economics tutor has the expertise that you're looking for.

Experience

The more experience a tutor has, the more they'll likely charge for their services. While experience will affect the price, it'll also affect how effectively they teach their students.

Experienced tutors will likely have seen it all and know exactly the best ways to help each of their students. Inexperienced tutors are available for students on a budget, but don't be surprised if they're still figuring some things out.

You'll also need tutors with specific experience. There's no point in hiring a private economics tutor who's taught in Melbourne and is familiar with the VCE exams but not the WACE exams, for example. They should be familiar with what's taught as part of secondary education in Brisbane or Queensland.

Specialisation

If there's something very specific you need to learn or are focusing on a particular area of economics, you'll need a private tutor that specialises in that area, too.

Most tutors that specialise in a particular area will likely mention it on their profiles, but make sure you ask them before you hire them.

Track Record

For any student looking for a private tutor to help them with an economics course or economics exams and assessments, the tutor's track record is massively important.

Ask potential tutors how their other students did on their exams, especially those that did the exams that you'll be doing. Private economics tutors from Sydney won't necessarily teach the same stuff.

Reputation

A private economics tutor's track record isn't everything as their reputation is also hugely important. Find out what their other students thought of them and whether they felt they got value out of their private tuition with them.

Most tutoring websites allow students to rate their tutors and leave a review so make sure you read them. Just remember that there are two sides to every story and a bad review or two doesn't mean they're an awful tutor.

Teaching Approach

You know how you like to learn and your private economics tutor should teach you in that way as that's really what you're paying for.
Ask them about their teaching approaches, how they like to work with students, and the kinds of activities and resources they use in their sessions.

Not only should tutors adjust their teaching approach to each student, but they need to make sure their approaches are suitable for the age of the student. A university student won't learn the same way as a secondary school student and the materials and approaches each tutor uses should reflect the student that they're teaching.

Availability

There's no point in hiring a private economics tutor that you can never arrange a session with. Make sure you check the availability of potential tutors before you start taking lessons with them.

Private tutoring becomes less effective if you have to learn at awkward times because your tutor isn't available at the ideal time.

Cost

For many, this is the most important criterion for hiring a private tutor. While cheaper tutors can be tempting, be careful of the false economy of hiring a cheap tutor that will ultimately cost more to hire because you'll need to spend more sessions with them.

Conversely, you could end up wasting a lot of money if you opt for a tutor that's too expensive and have to stop your lessons because you can no longer afford them.

Be sure to create a budget for private tutoring before you start talking to potential tutors.

Communication

For your private tutoring to be successful, communication is essential both in and out of your sessions. You'll need a tutor that communicates effectively when teaching you, but also a tutor that communicates outside of sessions so you can arrange your tutoring, know what you need to prepare for each session, etc.

Trial Sessions

Trial sessions or free sessions are a huge bonus for any private tutor. You can use these free sessions to check almost everything else we've just mentioned.

Always try out a few tutors before choosing the right one for you.

How to Find Private Economics Tutors in Brisbane

Now that you know what you're looking for, you can start your search for a private economics tutor. Here are some of the best places to start looking.

Tutoring Agencies

Tutoring agencies are businesses that provide tutors to students. Look for local and national tutoring agencies and let them know what you're looking for.

With tutoring agencies, however, you mightn't always get a choice of tutor and may just have to work with the tutor they send you.

Some agencies will let you specify what you're looking for and match you with a tutor whereas others may just allocate you a tutor regardless of what you asked for.

Universities

It's quite common for students at universities to offer tutoring. While these are often fairly inexperienced tutors (due to their age), they also tend to charge very little.

You can also visit university economics departments, especially if you're a student at said university and ask if they know tutors, offer extra tutoring, or have a bulletin board where tutors can post ads for their services.

Online Tutoring Platforms

Online tutoring platforms such as ours are great places to find tutors because that's exactly what they're for.

You can search for economics tutors in Brisbane, Queensland, or across Australia and around the world, browse their profiles, shortlist some of your favourites, and start getting in touch with them to arrange a session.

You can also see how much they charge, what their other students have to say about them, and lots of other information about them and their tutoring service.

Local Classifieds and Bulletin Boards

This is a more retro approach to finding goods and services, but local businesses sometimes still have bulletin boards for the community.

Have a look at them and if you can't see anyone offering private economics tutoring, you can always put up an announcement saying that you're looking for tutoring.

You can also pay for classified ads in local newspapers, magazines, etc.

Recommendations and Word of Mouth

Tell everyone you know that you're looking for a tutor and if it ever comes up in conversation, they'll be sure to mention you.
Word of mouth might be a classic approach, but it's incredibly effective.

Social Media, Forums, and Groups

Use your social media to spread the word and let friends, followers, and connections know you need a private economics tutor.
You can also join tutoring or economics groups and forums and post announcements there or search for tutors.
