Let's go

1. Infante Dom Pedro, Duke of Coimbra (1392–1449)

Infante Dom Pedro was a Portuguese statesman who was known as the “Soldier Prince”. He played an essential role in Portugal's early Renaissance era.

He advocated using diplomacy, education, and the arts to elevate Portugal's international status.

He was the fourth son of King John I and travelled extensively to represent Portugal in courts around Europe.

Following his travels, he brought humanist ideas back to Portugal.

He promoted education and art while encouraging Portuguese exploration.

His work would help lay the groundwork for Portugal's Age of Discovery.

2. Henry the Navigator (1394–1460)

Prince Henry, also known as Henry the Navigator, was a key figure in Portugal's Age of Discovery.

Ironically, Henry the Navigator never sailed himself and instead founded a school for navigators in the Portuguese city of Sagres.

There, sailors, cartographers, and astronomers would gather to share knowledge.

Similarly, he also sponsored several expeditions along the coast of Africa to find new trade routes to Asia and spread Christianity.

The result of his sponsorship was that Portuguese explorers mapped uncharted waters and developed techniques that would be used for later global trade routes.

Ultimately, Henry the Navigator's work helped Portugal become a very wealthy maritime power during the 15th century.

3. Bartolomeu Dias (c. 1450–1500)

As the first European to reach the southern tip of Africa, Bartolomeu Dias will be mostly remembered for naming it the Cape of Good Hope.

This was a huge breakthrough at the time as it proved that the Indian Ocean could be reached from Europe. This route would become the Cape Route and, until the Suez Canal, was easily the quickest and only feasible way to reach the Indian Ocean from Europe by sea.

The journey was hardly easy. There were dangerous seas and a near-mutiny from his crew. However, the result metaphorically paved the way for Vasco da Gama and cemented Portugal's position as a leader in global exploration, something that helped the country dominate the spice trade for decades.

4. Vasco da Gama (c. 1460–1524)

Vasco da Gama is probably one of the most famous Portuguese historical figures.

In 1948, the explorer became the first person to sail directly from Europe to India.

This opened a vital sea route connecting the East and West, bypassing traditional overland routes controlled by Middle Eastern Traders and giving Portugal direct access to spices and goods from Asia.

Da Gama was ruthless, but his tactics helped contribute to Portugal's status as a major trading empire at the time.

His voyages would influence global commerce and Portugal's colonial influence in Africa, Asia, and South America.

5. Ferdinand Magellan (1480–1521)

Fernão de Magalhães was another famous Portuguese explorer, more commonly known in English as Ferdinand Magellan.

He embarked on the first successful circumnavigation of the globe. Magellan died in the Philippines before completing the journey, but the expedition proved the world's roundness and highlighted the interconnectedness of the oceans.

People knew the earth was round long before Magellan's expedition, but this was the first time it had been proven first-hand with a voyage.

Magellan, though a famous Portuguese person, led the expedition for Spain. The journey was long and treacherous and involved mutiny, starvation, and conflict.

Despite all this, the voyage changed history, providing critical insights into the world's geography and influencing future explorers.

6. Luís de Camões (c. 1524–1580)

Here, we have our first Portuguese person who isn't technically an explorer.

Luis de Camoes

Often considered Portugal's national poet, Luís de Camões still wrote about the voyages of Portuguese explorers, particularly the aforementioned Vasco da Gama.

Similar to Homer's Odyssey, Camões' epic poem Os Lusíadas recounts Portugal's heroic past while capturing the spirit of the Age of Exploration.

Despite not technically being an explorer, Camões led an adventurous life, spending years in exile, serving as a soldier, and even ending up shipwrecked.

June 10th, Portugal Day, also celebrates Luís de Camões, as this day commemorates his death on the same day.

7. Catarina de Bragança (1638–1705)

Catarina de Bragança, Catherine of Braganza in English, was Queen of England through her marriage to King Charles II.

She introduced Portuguese customs, including tea drinking, to British aristocratic society, which has become an enduring aspect of British culture.

Her influence on the English court helped strengthen Anglo-Portuguese relationships and England's acquisition of Tangier and Bombay, which were part of her dowry.

Although her life was full of political challenges and personal tragedies, her legacy is that of a bridge between Portuguese culture and British culture.
