How Does The Voice Work?

The Voice as a worldwide series operates in a few different ways, tailored to the local audience.

Sometimes, the rules also change from year to year to help make the competition more streamlined and interesting for viewers and participants alike.

The central idea of The Voice is that already-famous recording artists take talented unsigned/undiscovered artists under their wing and help them become better singers over the course of the competition, leading to victory for both the contestants and the coaches.

Phase 1: Blind Auditions

Auditioners perform their piece on a stage in front of the judges and a live audience.

The four judges are facing away from the person auditioning. This is a unique twist for singing competition shows since looks really do influence how people perceive a person’s singing! Without being able to see the person, the judges must rely only on what they hear; if they turn around, it means they really like what the contestant is bringing!

As the contestants audition, the judges can either press their button to turn their chair around and see the singer, not press their button and pass on the singer, or use a “block” which prevents one of the other coaches from selecting the singer (a strategic move for the coaches, since they are in competition with each other).

If more than one judge wants to recruit a singer, the singer has the final say in who they get to go with.

The judges each build a team of 12 singers before moving on to the next phase. The number of people who get to audition depends on how quickly the judges fill up their teams. If each person who auditions gets chosen, there will only be 48 auditioning acts. But, many people audition who end up not being chosen by any of the judges, meaning more people can audition.

Another unique feature of The Voice is that contestants can audition solo, or as a duo, trio, or group!

Phase 2: Callbacks and Battle Rounds

As of season 12, the Callbacks consist of each judge coaching their team members before they perform again to show off their improvements.

The coaches sort their team of 12 into four groups of three and give each team a different theme, like “Michael Jackson” or “Greatest Collaborations of all Time.” The singers collaborate and compete, performing again in front of the judges and a live audience.

Based on these performances, one artist is chosen to skip the next stage of battles to the Battle Rounds, one is chosen to advance to the Ultimate Callbacks, and one is eliminated.

By the end of the first round of Callbacks, each coach has eliminated four of their singers.

In the Ultimate Callbacks, the singers for each team are sorted into two groups of two for a sing-off.

The two singers sing head-to-head for one more shot to advance to the Battle Rounds. One artist advances while one artist is eliminated.

In the Battles, singers perform a duet together (or, in a rare case, a triplet). The judges can advance two winners directly to the Semifinal per day (four artists in total). Typically, one of the duetters is eliminated and the other advances either to the Semifinal or the Singoff round. In season 12, there were a few instances where none of the singers in the duet/triplet were eliminated, and another instance where both singers were eliminated.

In the Singoffs, artists are paired off and sing a solo song they’ve prepared. Only four artists can advance from the Singoffs to the Semifinals.

Only four artists can advance to the final stage of The Voice.

Phase 3: Semi-Finals and Finals

There are now 8 contestants left in the Semi-Finals.

Each singer performs one solo song they’ve prepared, and the judges can only choose one singer from their team to send to the Finals. (At this point, each judge had two singers remaining on their teams.)

Therefore, only four singers advance to the Finals.

In the Finals, each singer performed one solo song they prepared and one duet with their coach. The winner of the competition was determined by votes from the public sent in by text message, and the winner was announced the same night as the Finals.

The Winner of The Voice received $100,000 and a recording contract with Universal Music Australia.

Who Won The Voice 2023?

So, who won The Voice Australia in 2023’s competition?

The contestants were all powerhouses of skill and sound, showcasing incredible raw talent combined with hard work and training.

While every contestant who made it past auditions consistently impressed the judges and/or audience with their singing, ultimately there can be only one winner.

In 2023, Tarryn Stokes won with her performance of “All By Myself” by Eric Carmen and her duet of “The Best” by Bonnie Tyler with coach Rita Ora. This was Ora’s second year in a row of being the winning coach.

Who Won The Voice 2022?

Season 11 of The Voice Australia, which aired from 18 April 2022 to 29 May 2022 saw singer Lachie Gill win with his performance of “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper and duet with “Always Remember Us This Way” from the film “A Star is Born” (2018) with coach Rita Ora.

The judges on The Voice, no matter what country, are always talented artists who already have a successful music career. They become judges on The Voice to help budding musical artists hone their talent and learn how to become a performer ready for the fast-paced world of professional music production.

It’s not easy to be a commercial musical artist, so having a coach who can help prep newbie singers for all the aspects of being in the biz in addition to learning how to make their singing better is a great gift!

Even singers who don’t progress very far in the competition benefit from the instruction and coaching from the judges, as well as exposure on the show, and may even make life-long connections with the other contestants.

If you’re chosen, you’ll be invited to the Blind Auditions!

How to Prepare to Audition for The Voice

Before you send your video submission to be on The Voice Australia, there’s one main thing you can do to help increase your chances of being chosen and making it far in the contest - maybe even making it all the way to the Grand Finale!

It’s a good idea to seek out singing lessons and coaching from a professional singing teacher and/or vocal coach before you audition so you can put your best foot forward in your video application and your blind audition. While the coaches on The Voice will give you some instruction if you’re chosen, in order to get to that point, you have to already have a lot of talent and skill.

Learning how to control your voice and sing in a way that protects your vocal cords is paramount if you plan on singing a lot! Plus, you’ll want to be literate with singing terms and concepts before you step on stage.

Many of the auditioners for The Voice already have a lot of experience singing; they just haven’t been signed by a studio or record label yet. To have a chance of competing with experienced singers, you also need to be an experienced singer, so train with a professional for as long as possible before audition season!
