It's not easy to be the best. But it helps if you're willing to buy your own trophies.

Jarod Kintz

We have little information on this American author, save for a broad social media presence. And his writings, of course. This Book Is Not for Sale is chock-full of witticisms, such as the one above. His sentiment in no way applies to Logie Award winners. They work hard for trophies, sometimes going their entire career without any recognition - well, of the statuette type.

We, the viewers, love our celebrities, particularly 'television's most axed man'. Much to our glee, he finally got his due, and the Logie Hall of Fame made a splash, too. This list-view of the top Logie Awards winners gives you the results in a nutshell. Read all about them, and the night's highlights, below.

Let's go

Rebecca Gibney: the 2024 Logie Hall of Fame Inductee

Rebecca has been entertaining us for more than 40 years, in a variety of formats. She's done drama, comedy, documentaries, and adverts. She's made films while appearing in television series, and made guest appearances on assorted shows, throughout. We can safely say Rebecca has earned her win, but...

I’m so shook this is only the 4th woman to ever be inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame. ... Do you know the other three women?

Jared Richards

For the record, Jared, we agree with you. And, the other three women are Ruth Cracknell, Noni Hazlehurst, and Kerry-Ann Kennerly.

Larry Emdur: Gold Logie Winner

This night was all about hilarity, and no one did hilarious better than our Gold Logie winner. Or, better said: he had stiff competition in the hilarity department. Still, that bit about breaking a promise to his wife so he could get his tattoo... He had us all in stitches with that one.

All that came later in the night. Before he claimed his Gold, he stood up for the Bert Newton Award for the Most Popular Presenter. It's about time that Larry authors one of the top unforgettable moments in Logie history! All over social media, fans, friends and colleagues proclaimed their delight.

person
Why is Larry television's most axed man?

Over the years, shows he's hosted got cancelled, for one reason or the other. But being television's most axed man isn't a suitable description. He's more of a comeback kid because he keeps landing new gigs!

Ally Langdon: Best News or Public Affairs Presenter

Ally's been on the Logie stage before, as one of a whole reporting group. This year marks her first individual Logie win, as a member of the Current Affair team. After more than 20 years in the business, and reporting from far and wide, we'd say it's well-deserved.

Ally's popularity overrode other Logies nominations for the category. Those include:

  • Sarah Ferguson (7.30)
  • Peter Overton (Nine News)
  • Michael Usher (Seven News)
  • Liz Hayes (Under Investigation)
  • David Speers (Insiders)

Kitty Flanagan: Best Lead Actress in a Comedy

Kitty is no stranger to awards ceremonies, nor is she averse to receiving awards. Over her 30+ year career, she's earned quite a few. Still, what's amazing is that she's always looking out for others. In fact, her Logie acceptance speech touched on the importance of giving young comics opportunities to shine.

I think it's very difficult for young comedians to get a chance.

Kitty Flanagan

Robert Sitch: Best Lead Actor in a Comedy

With Robert and Kitty winning Silver, and Celia Pacquola receiving a nomination, we might safely say that Utopia is on solid ground. More importantly, we're thrilled that Robert claimed Silver for acting. Considering his last nomination was way back in 1998 (for Frontline), we'd say this award is long overdue!

It's actually a thrill after all this time.

Robert Sitch

Robert has received awards for the production side of his work. He's stood on stage with his ensemble to claim their statuettes. So, it's no stretch to believe that receiving a Logie in his name is thrilling.

Let's go

Sophie Wilde: Best Supporting Actress

Sophie's a relative newcomer to the industry, but she's been diligently applying herself. Taking on project, after project, and throwing in a few films, besides, Sophie's had a busy last four years. This year has been particularly fruitful, where awards are concerned.

Of the seven nominations she's received, she's won four times, including at Cannes! Clearly, she was born to entertain, and Boy Swallows Universe is just the vehicle for her. In fact, it may that show's year to shine, too!

Bryan Brown: Best Supporting Actor

It must be tough beating out two co-stars to claim the Silver Logie. Maybe not tough for Bryan; he certainly deserves the award.

Tough for the voters, though. How can one choose the best supporting actor of what might be the year's best show, when they're all so good?

In fact, Boy did win the Best Miniseries award. But that's another category. Besides Bryan, the Best Supporting Actor category listed two more contenders from the same show:

  • Travis Frimmel (Boy Swallows World)
  • Lee Tiger Halley (Boy Swallows World)
  • Guy Pierce (The Clearing)
  • Jay Ryan (Scrublands)
  • Stephen Curry (Bay of Fire)

We can safely say that Boy Swallows World will go down in Logies history as one of Australia's best shows. The number of nominations alone is enough to ensure that face

Deborah Mailman: Best Lead Actress in a Drama

Deborah claimed her sixth Logie Award with her performance in Total Control. She must have a large shelf to store all those statuettes on! She's been racking up awards since her breakout role in Radiance (1998). No worries; they're all well-deserved.

Logies 2024 had a special meaning for Deborah. She was the first Aboriginal actress to win a major award. Her role in Control allows her to highlight Indigenous issues. This is important to her, particularly after the failed Voice referendum.

Felix Cameron: Best Lead Actor in a Drama

Imagine for a second, that someone slept through the Logie Awards show. And then, when they woke up, they paid no attention the news or social media. Such a person might head to work and ask "Who won the Silver Logie?" Anyone gushing about Boy Swallows World has a long list of Silver winners to detail.

They might start by mentioning Felix. This rising star had competition from fellow Boy cast-member Simon Baker for this award. Simon, with a long list of credits (and nominations!) to his name, could hardly be mad at losing out, this round. Besides, he shares a distinction with Felix: he too claimed the Most Popular New Talent award when he started out, in 1993.

Graham Kennedy Award

At just 15, Felix already commands respect, both for his acting chops and his good heart. Didn't we all tear up a little when he did, while thanking his family? This quip was another gotcha soundbite that audiences loved, at home and at the event:

She never clarified whether it was Everest or the Dandenongs, but I think we got there.

Felix, on how his acting coach motivated him

We'll note that Boy Swallows World isn't Felix's first acting job. In 2020, he shared a screen with the legendary actress, Jacki Weaver, in Penguin Bloom. Still, as a breakout role, Eli Bell seems tailor-made for our rising star. Look for greater things from him!

A Nod to Sam Pang: 2024 Host of Logie Awards

This spectacle is all about the stars, but we have to give Sam his due. He did such a great job hosting the Logie Awards last year that he got to do it again.

He kept things moving and kept making wisecracks, even making a serious jab at Seven, at one point. Was he trying to bite the hand that fed him, or was it all in fun? In any case, here's to a job well done, Sam.

Logie Awards 2024: Closing Thoughts

But for the final chapter, the 64th edition of the Logie Awards ready for the history books. However, summarising such a spectacle is no easy feat. We had tears and laughter, gaffes and lucky saves. What else is there to add?

The show ran very, very long. Around 11:00PM, notable voices and home audiences alike were taking so social media to express their frustration:

In part, this expanded broadcast has to do with TV Week revamping the show's format. Before, the Best Actor category might have been from any type of show. Now, we have '... in a Comedy' and '... in a Drama' categories to vote on and award.

Some speculate the intention was to make our Logie ceremony more like The Emmys. That US awards ceremony even subdivides categories, which makes its broadcast even more expansive. Do we need our Logies to follow suit?

Our Australian entertainment industry is rather insular. Furthermore, the guidelines for a Logie qualification are fairly narrow, and rigid. So, it's no surprise that the same names, and the same shows, feature across multiple award categories. Adding more distinctions does little to broaden recognition, but it does take more time to acknowledge them all.

And, there you have it: everything you need to know about the Logie Awards, 2024 edition. Which were your favourite parts?

The Best of Logies 2024 was:

Larry's Gold... And his speeches! 0%
Rebecca's Hall of Fame induction: more, please! 0%
Felix's two awards: he's the one to watch! 0%
The entertainment: Jessica Mauboy and Guy Sebastian rocked! 0%
