Tutoring is gradually becoming an increasingly popular profession. On the one hand, university admissions are more competitive than they used to be, so students need to have a good level of knowledge to enrol in a bachelor's degree programme they want.

Private tutoring can be very effective in advanced level studies because we don't learn the same way when we are face to face with the tutor or when we take lessons in a group with other students.

The tutor can answer each of our questions on English, Maths, Science or other subjects and tailor their approach to our learning style.

On the other hand, thanks to the Internet and online tutoring, it became very easy for a tutor to find students. Tutors can share information about their classes through different channels of communication and organise their classes when it best suits them.

Students may need help at any point of their education, whether at primary and secondary school or university. However, an especially stressful moment for a lot of us is the preparation for the HSC exam that will directly influence our ATAR.

The topics that we study in high school become more difficult compared with the previous stages of our education and we feel a lot of pressure as the school year advances.

Some of the subjects in the highest demand at high school are English, Maths and Science. The first one is compulsory for students in year 11 and year 12, so all of them need to reach as advanced a level as possible.

The second and the third one are not mandatory for every student but will be required to study engineering, science, informatics, medicine and many other prestigious professions.

If you choose to become an HSC tutor in any of these three subjects, you will be sure not to run out of work, so it can be an excellent side job or even a main source of revenue.

If you want to know more about HSC tutoring in general, there are plenty of useful tips in our article on the topic.

In the present article, however, we will focus on the qualifications that can be of help in that profession.

No special qualification needed

As you may know, not everyone can teach at an Australian school. Teaching requires special skills, such as communicating with children, structuring lessons and managing stressful situations, so school teachers need to have a bachelor of education to be hired.

As a result, even if you know your subject very well, you cannot start teaching at primary or secondary school straight away. The two possible solutions are either to do a bachelor of education or to enrol in a shorter training programme in case you already have another degree.

That, however, does not apply to private lessons. In fact, for tutoring, you are not required to have any degree at all. All you need is to be good at your subject and know how to explain things to other people.

What's more, if you choose to specialise in HSC tutoring, you will work with students who are almost adults and know what they need.

Of course, depending on how organised they are, it can be more or less difficult to teach them. For example, if a high school student wants to improve their grades but isn't ready to work seriously, the tutor may struggle to make them advance.

Still, you will not have to wrestle for the attention of twenty young children at the same time, as primary school teachers do. Just try to adapt your approach a little bit and your tutoring classes will bring about results.

Try to look for information about the HSC

Probably the most important point for high school tutors is to get up to date on the HSC syllabus. Whether, you want to teach English, Maths, Science or any other subject in Sydney and NSW, you will need it to program your lessons.

This is particularly relevant for those who finished their studies many years ago. In their case, the syllabus may have evolved significantly, so they will need to spend some time familiarising themselves with it.

That being said, even those who already work as HSC tutors shouldn't get complacent. It's always better to take your precautions and double-check the HSC for small changes every year.

And then, if you master the peculiarities of your subject really well, it will help you make a good impression on your students and their parents. They will see that you can be trusted and won't hesitate to employ you.

If you want to know more about effective HSC English tutoring, you can find lots of useful tips in our article on the topic.

Take time to improve your CV

If you choose to become an HSC tutor in one of the popular subjects, like English, Maths or Science, you are likely to find a lot of students because of the huge demand. Nevertheless, spending some time improving your chances can always be worth it.

You shouldn't forget that it's students' parents who usually look for tutors for their children and you will need to convince them. The safest way to make sure they contact you in the first place is to write a strong CV.

First, you should mention all your experiences that are related to your subject and to teaching in general. For example, if you want to teach physics in Sydney, having worked as an engineer in a company can be a huge plus.

Second, you should add your education diploma. HSC English, Maths and Science courses often deal with advanced topics and students' parents are much more likely to trust a person with higher education.

Third, you should say a few words about your interpersonal skills. Tutoring is primarily about effective communication with your students, so you should stress your ability to understand other people's needs when studying and be empathetic.

If you need help with preparing a motivating maths lesson, you will certainly find useful information in our article.

The first lesson is crucial

Once you've scheduled your first lesson, all you need is to prepare a few engaging tasks to evaluate your student's level and display your teaching skills in all their glory.

You shouldn't underestimate the importance of that moment. Students' parents often contact several tutors at first and then decide with whom they will be studying after the first lesson.

If you've got there, it is not important anymore if you have a bachelor's degree or teaching experience. What will really count is whether the students feel comfortable learning with you.

Try to be positive when giving your opinion on their level. Even if you think that their knowledge of English, Maths or Science is not brilliant, you can tell them how you are planning to help them during the year and what teaching methods you will use.

If students believe in themselves they will work harder to continue their studies at the university of their dreams in Sydney or elsewhere in NSW.

If tutors see that their students need to catch up with Maths or Science, they can start by giving them easy activities at first to review the basics and then move to more advanced tasks.

As for English, it can be useful to have a look at the HSC methodology that children are studying at school. During our studies at primary and secondary school, we don't always have time to work on our English writing in detail. The help of a private teacher can really make a change.

Use different communication channels

Tutors who want to make HSC tutoring their main occupation or simply find a lot of students should consider using several media to share information about their services online.

If you are a bachelor's student or a professional working with Maths, Science, English or another HSC subject, you can post an advert on your Facebook page or Instagram and it will spread by word of mouth among your friends and their acquaintances online.

Another effective method for HSC tutors to find high school students is to start their own blog on education. You can share tips from your own experience as a student to help others in their learning.

From your blog, students and their parents will see that you have a good knowledge of teaching methods and can help them with an advanced-level subject.

Additionally, writing blog articles on teaching and learning can be a good way for you to reflect on the topic and come up with new ideas for your classes. Even if you don't have a bachelor's or another higher education diploma, you can certainly tell a lot of things based on your high school studies.

Finally, if you want your profile to be seen by thousands of students from Sydney and other cities in Australia, Superprof is the right place for you.

On our website, every teacher can create an account and publish information about their tutoring lessons. As you teach different students, they will leave reviews about your teaching style and skills and even more people will contact you.

Superprof is easy to use and you can give your tutoring lessons when and where it best suits you.

If you are interested in teaching Science to high school students to prepare for university, our article on HSC Science tutoring will certainly help you.
