Tutoring Qualifications for a VCE tutor

how to become a vce tutor australia

What qualifications do you need to become a VCE tutor?

The first step before advertising your services is to understand what you want to teach. As a private tutor, you’re expected to be very savvy in the subjects you teach. While having a college degree isn’t a requirement for many tutoring jobs, it is important to have at least some formal education or training in the subject you choose.

Once you’ve decided on a subject, you will need to become an expert in the VCE curriculum you’ll be teaching. It is important that you understand the standards and methods of teaching that students are getting in a classroom environment.

You can find plenty of excellent online resources for the VCE studies and units as well as some exercises and suggested syllabus that could help you set your course schedule accordingly. Remember that creating outlines and lesson plans is a great way to plan out a tutoring session and refer back for a refresher.

Next, you will need to define your personal teaching method. This will vary depending on the subject you are teaching. Some subjects might benefit from a theoretical approach while others might need more educational games and activities during your sessions that can turn learning into a fun and interactive experience. PowerPoint presentations, coding exercises and even social media can bring a regular lesson to life and capture your student’s attention.

For more demanding tutoring jobs, communicating regularly with your student’s teacher also ensures that your lesson plans are consistent with what your student is learning in the classroom. Since a VCE tutor needs to adhere to a specific study plan, it is a good idea to be in contact with educational institutions in Victoria in order to make sure that you are following the steps and can bring your students to success with your tuition.

Tutoring Skills You Should Have

what are tutoring qualifications

If you want to become the best possible VCE tutor and find more tutoring jobs, it is important that you work on building the tutoring skills that will drive you to success:

  1. Be flexible: Tutors need to be adaptive. A successful tutor seeks out and discovers their student's needs and then adjusts instruction to fit those specific needs and learning styles. It’s also helpful to be flexible with the location of tutoring. Decide whether you’ll go to a client’s house, a local library, tutor from your own home or another specified location. Online tutoring also offers a lot of flexibility since both you and your student can conduct tutorials from anywhere you'd like.
  2. Be patient: Patience, the ability to remain calm and respectful, is an essential skill for tutors. This is because tutors have advanced knowledge in a subject and need to help someone with little-to-no knowledge. By staying calm, you can not only ensure that the session runs smoothly, but you can also help your students practice self-patience to conquer challenging subjects.
  3. Work on your problem-solving skills: As a tutor, you have to have great problem-solving skills. It is important to remember that most of the people seeking a tutor are ones who are not learning like they should with the standard curriculum. Because of this, it’s up to the tutor to come up with new ways of teaching that will reach students in ways that standard ways of teaching don’t. Being able to see a problem that isn’t being fixed by normal procedures, and thinking outside of the box to find new avenues to address it is an extremely sought after skill in the job market.
  4. Encourage independence: You do not want the student to rely on you at all times. Let them know that they must put forth an effort to benefit from tutoring. Give students strategies to be independent and more effective learners by having students look at how they think and learn, how they study, and how they manage their studies for the rest of their life.
  5. Be organised: As a tutor, you have to coordinate schedules, keep homework worksheets in line, and systematically organise each of your students’ needs. As a consequence, you develop stellar organizational skills by balancing all of these areas. Organisational skills are a must in any job.
  6. Learn communication skills: Tutors should have excellent verbal communication skills to help their students understand complex ideas. However, written communication is also important as tutors might have to contact their students by email or write comprehensive notes for their students to use in the future. It’s important that you are able to explain information without backtracking, sidetracking, and fumbling around a lot as that can confuse your students.
  7. Motivate your students: encourage students to strive to be the best they can, to reach their goals, to recogniae their strengths, to focus on learning how to learn so that they will be successful in the future.
  8. Have good time management skills: Another useful skill for tutors is time management. Being able to manage their time productively means they can make sure tutoring sessions don't go overtime. Additionally, staying on task ensures they can cover everything their student wanted to accomplish during the session.

How to find tutoring jobs
There are many excellent tutoring jobs and opportunities. Source: Pexels

If you are looking for opportunities to start your tuition journey in Victoria, this might just be what you are looking for.

In 2021, the Victorian Government invested $250 million towards the Tutor Learning Initiative which enabled all Victorian government schools and qualifying non-government schools, to engage over 6,400 tutors to provide students, who struggled most during remote and flexible learning in 2020, with extra targeted learning support in 2021.

In October 2021, the Victorian Government has invested an additional $230 million of funding to extend the Tutor Learning Initiative for the 2022 school year, which will continue to provide school students with targeted learning support.

These extra resources help to support the learning and engagement of students who struggled most during remote and flexible learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

You are eligible if you:

  • are currently registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)
