5. Australian National University (ANU)

The Australian National University (ANU) is a university in Canberra. It's also part of the Group of Eight research group, all of whom made our top 10 list.

By national decree!

The Australian National University is the only university to have been created by the Parliament of Australia.

The Australian National University's most significant point of pride is likely that it has a higher number of Nobel laureates among its staff and alums than any other university in Australia.

The university's main campus is in Acton, Canberra. Still, it also has its Kioloa Coastal Campus, the Mount Stromlo Observatory, the North Australian Research Unit Campus (NARU), Siding Spring Observatory (SSO), and Spring Valley Farm.

The Australian National University ranks well in archaeology, politics, anthropology, and philosophy.

4. The University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney)

The University of New South Wales is one of the best in Australia. Formerly the New South Wales University of Technology, this university is now praised for its employability. It's ranked #2 in Australia and #27 in the world for graduate employability.

It belongs to the Universitas 21 group of research-intensive universities alongside three other Australian universities (University of Melbourne, University of Queensland, and University of Sydney).

Times Higher Education put this university 6th in their World University Rankings, US News ranked it 4th, and QS World University Rankings placed it as Australia's 3rd best university.

In terms of subjects, it ranks in the top 20 in the world for subjects like mining and mineral engineering, petroleum engineering, civil and structural engineering, law and legal studies, and marketing.

The University of New South Wales is Australia's best university for startups and number one for impact and research quality. Carefully consider the pros and cons of going to university when making your decision.

3. Monash University

Monash University is one of Australia's Group of Eight research universities. It has four campuses in Australia and one in Malaysia. Regarding student numbers, it's also one of Australia's biggest universities.

US News ranks Monash as the fourth-best university in Australia and New Zealand and outright fourth in Australia. It also ranks #37 in the world.

QS World University Rankings only placed Monash as the fifth-best university in Australia, while Times Higher Education believed it to be second. We've ranked it as Australia's 3rd best university.

According to the QS World University Rankings, it's considered to be one of the best universities in the world for fields like pharmacy and pharmacology, second only to Harvard University in the United States. It also ranks well for anatomy and physiology, engineering, and nursing.

2. The University of Sydney (USYD)

The University of Sydney is the oldest in Australia and Oceania and was founded in 1850.

Both the QS University Rankings and US News consider it Australia's second-best university. However, Times Higher Education placed it in third.

QS ranked it the #18 university in the world, US News ranked it #28, and Times Higher Education considered it #60.

It's praised for the high quality of its teaching, campus life, and state-of-the-art facilities. It also offers more disciplines and research areas than any other university in Australia.

The University of Sydney ranks highly in arts and humanities, endocrinology and metabolism, electrical and electronic engineering, and oncology.

Just remember that the overall rankings doesn't necessarily mean that the university will offer the best degrees in your chosen subject.

1. The University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne was founded in 1853 and is the second-oldest university in Australia. It's also likely the second-largest in the country in terms of student enrolment, though the numbers are very similar to those of RMIT University (also in Victoria) and the University of Sydney. Melbourne boasts more postgraduate students than any other university in Australia.

If you ask anybody, the University of Melbourne is seemingly the best university in Australia. Various online rankings rate it as the top-ranked academic institution in the country, and we're inclined to believe them.
