Even though tutoring between savvy students across the whole subject range - from English to maths to science to university entrance exams like the GAMSAT - is still very popular between private tutors and students face to face in larger cities like Sydney and Melbourne, online learning is really taking off in Australia.

And just imagine what happens when a pandemic hits...

What is the best of time for a child, high school student, or university student and how can they achieve the optimal results from the academic support they receive with internet-based tutors? And are there tangible benefits that one can find have an impact on education skills?

If you are at school in Sydney, Melbourne, or any of the states who use it, are you thinking about your ATAR?

Superprof is here to answer these queries and others you may have about private online tutoring.

Probing Online Education Issues

In Australia, as well as in other countries, a platform like Superprof, where tutors can offer their services entirely digitally, benefits from a stringent reviews system and is one of the most effective means of being able to find teaching support or a private teacher to bring up the average quality of your work.

This might sound biased and anecdotal, but research into online tutoring conducted by Cherie Mazer, an educational expert at the Kaplan Institute, has shown that pupils actually take incredibly well to digital and blended learning in particular. This latter term refers to when there is a healthy mix of digital and in-person education in a given classroom environment.

Mazer's Best Practices in Online Tutoring research took a sample of 350 sessions, and randomly analysed a number of factors, with maths, English, and science as the main core subject range between students and private tutors.

To ensure that only the most useful data would be scrutinised, Mazer restricted her research's focus to three core subjects – Maths, English and Science.

The study's primary focus was to distil best practices across this subject range for any academic year and sought to provide reviews and information on pedagogical practices to find the top methods for this.

It will come as no surprise that the data varied from subject to subject but there was a high correlation across maths, English, and maths in terms of coefficients in terms of base skills like spelling, arithmetic, and primary scientific phenomena like sound waves.

It should also be noted that this took place in a US context but given that it applies to web-based tutelage for pupils generally, it has been assumed that it can apply to education broadly.

Find out the best reasons why you should use online tutoring.

Best Practice for Online Tutoring

The cost-benefit analysis of the private tutors and their students in Mazer's findings showed a high yield (even when lessons were free) for the math, science, and English services.

There was also a strong correlation in tutor quality assurance for student satisfaction, near in scope to the kind of services Superprof is known to offer, wherein tutors are vetted and reviews posted before your first lesson (which is often also free).

The numbers rarely lie

The average price of tuition is what you would generally call reasonable in the study, and the average years of study of the tutors in the field were also taken into account.

In order to reach the top-level quality tuition that learners expected, whether at school or university, the cost and quality need to be measured against student results as well as perceived satisfaction in order to have a higher average quality level across the field.

Have a read of this article that proves that online learning works.

Takeaways from Mazer's Research

Learners of all years of school and university were asked to call upon their experience with the tutor to rate their satisfaction.

Whilst only around 12% of those surveyed about their tuition experience actually responded, some surprising results were shown:

  • 96% of students said the online tutor was able to effectively help them complete their homework
  • 96% of students said the tutor helped them improve their grades
  • 97% of students commented that their self-confidence in education improved thanks to the tuition

It goes without saying then that the students who used the piece of their free time to help provide some responses showed a satisfaction rate of:

  • Excellent – 43,855 responses – 79.8%
  • Very Good – 5,937 responses – 10.8%
  • Good – 2,505 responses – 4.6%
  • Fair – 1,110 responses – 2%
  • Other – 1,533 responses – 2.8%.

Just Why is Online Tutoring So Effective?

We're going to call it - Mazer's study came very near to identifying the top ways of achieving student satisfaction with online private tutoring.

Given the increased self-confidence of respondents and their ease of using such services, it can be assumed that given the current push towards online education, the popularity of these methods will continue to grow.

This will likely be the case given the experience with computer-based work and study that we've all experienced since the pandemic, making the concept overall less foreign and will probably continue to be the case year after year into the next decade if developments in digital education continue is such a way.

Ever considered why the online tutoring sector is booming in Sydney, Melbourne, and across Australia?

Concrete Benefits of Online Tutoring

Whether you're studying at school or university in person or online, there are costs and educational benefits to switching your lessons or private tuition to improve your average scores.

Even those who are studying for an ATAR at the end of high school or preparing for a GAMSAT exam for entry into a medicine course can benefit from this kind of help, even though such academic subjects might seem counterproductive to take via computer.

Let's take a look at some of the reasons online tutoring is such a boon.

Digital Natives

The generation after 1996 is the first to not know the world without the internet.

What this means is that the comfortability they feel with doing anything and everything on a device that has an internet connection permits a whole new range of possibilities and adaptations of previous strategies that we used for training and acquiring knowledge.

These young people (and increasingly older people too) learn without even knowing they are doing it, and do so in formal and informal ways, so finding new information and bringing new ideas to life from this presents us with plenty of exciting directions when it comes to developing new methods for online tutoring.

Diverse Resources

On top of the simple comfortability of taking lessons online, digital resources can easily be used to complement material ones and are also able to enhance lessons to make them more interactive.

The main kinds of things that can be done in a digital classroom are not limited to the curriculum either - if a teacher wants to bring in new technology, even things as simple as a padlet for keeping track of new ideas can be brought into diversifying the way we learn.

Beyond actual learning-focussed technologies, such as apps for memorising language or concepts with flashcards or quizzes, the functional programs such as interactive whiteboards and breakout rooms on Zoom and Microsoft Teams mean that even when working together remotely, pupils can interact and have an impact on the classroom, meaning that it's not totally teacher-centred.

What's more is, real test conditions and timing can be simulated within a computer-based teaching environment and the access to practice tests and exams is so much easier with a shared folder on a Google drive or similar platform, wherein students and teachers alike can put their own materials in.

Some Downsides of Online Tutoring

It goes without saying that shifting pedagogy so drastically isn't always a good thing, especially when you're dealing with an older expert teacher who has a specific way of doing things.

It can also be tricky for tutors when it comes to actually find students. Not all resources are as centralised as Superprof is.

Marketing yourself as a tutor can be a tall order in and of itself, so really making yourself stand out can be hard. Once you get past this barrier, even establishing and keeping a rapport with learners can be hard, especially since it's so easy for students to rearrange their schedule at the last minute with the flexibility of online study.

Plausible Reasons for the Boost in Online Instruction

At the end of the day, it's actually blended learning that we crave

This means that students are able to engage with one another in a classroom setting whilst making the most of the world wide web - and boy is it wide! The resources and independent instruction that young and adult learners can engage themselves in are growing all the time.

The safety and convenience of studying with an online tutor are also second to none - you can do it from the comfort of your own home and aren't constrained by a commute or rigid schedule, meaning that if the time works for you and your tutor, you can do it whenever.

There's no excuse to not start learning about that niche subject you've wanted for years! Knitting? French? Music production? There is a private tutor to help you on Superprof!

Have a think about one-to-one, online teaching services and see how you can make the most of them.
