The Best Websites for VCE Biology Practice Papers and Resources

For any student, the internet is an incredible resource for everything from information on their course to resources like past papers.

To save you some time, here are a few of our favourite websites for VCE Biology past papers, practice papers, and other resources.

VCAA

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) is the authority behind the VCE and you can find a plethora of useful information on their website including things like the Study Design for VCE Biology, the VCE Biology Exam Specification, and revisions and study resources including past papers.

Since the Study Design and Exam Specification were changed in 2022, there's technically only one up-to-date past paper available, but you can still use the past papers from 2017 to 2021 to help you with revision provided you check them against the Study Design or you use them just to practise exam technique.

ATAR Notes

ATAR Notes is an excellent website for Australian secondary school students and you should consider using it to help you with your VCE Biology revision.

There are lots of free VCE study notes available on the website as well as lectures, videos, and articles on lots of different VCE subjects.

The videos on their YouTube channel also include lots of useful explainers with advice on VCE exams and Study Designs.

You can also buy VCE study guides and topic tests from their online store.

Free VCE Notes

As the name suggests, Free VCE Notes is a website with exactly that. You can find notes on VCE subjects organised by unit.

There are also lots of practice questions to help you test your knowledge of the various VCE Biology topics, particularly the ones in Unit 3 and Unit 4 as these will be the ones on your end-of-year VCE Biology exam in Year 12.

Revise Online

The Revise Online website has several topic tests, exam builders, and full exams for several VCE subjects including VCE Biology.

The resources are for both Year 11 and Year 12 VCE Biology across all four units and while this isn't a free resource, students can expect to pay $44 per course, which is similar to the price you'd pay for a VCE study guide.

Of course, before you open your wallet and pay for a course, you may as well try out some of the other free resources first. If you still feel like you need to do more revision once you've exhausted the free resources, it might be worthwhile investing in some premium resources.

Studyclix

The Studyclix website has a very limited free version, but the yearly subscriptions at $59 and $89 a year offer a lot of useful resources for VCE students.

The Plus+ subscription, for example, covers all subjects for 12 months and offers exam reports, an exam builder, and a limited number of quizzes.

Exam builders, for example, are particularly useful when you're in the early stages of your revision and haven't covered everything to be able to do a full past paper or practice paper.

The All Papers

While none of these websites is winning any prizes for original names, it's unlikely you'll be confused as to what's on offer.

The All Papers is simply a large archive of past papers from various exam boards and bodies including the VCAA.

While the past papers on this website aren't very clearly organised, they're very easily downloaded and the date of the exam is right there on the cover page so you can check which ones are right for you before printing them off and using them as part of your revision.

Advice for Using VCE Biology Past Papers

Check the Study Design

We can't stress this enough, but the Study Design for VCE Biology changed in 2022 and while there's still a lot of overlap with older resources, you need to look closely at the current study design and compare it to the older resources you want to use.

VCE Biology can be quite difficult but you can make it easier by knowing what's expected of you.

There's little point in sitting a past paper that features a lot of questions on topics that you're not going to see on the exam that you're taking.
Of course, these outdated past papers can still be useful for practising exam technique and doing practice exams in exam conditions, but you have to remember that the actual content of them mightn't appear in the exam that you sit.

Review the Exam Specifications

The Study Design explains both the VCE Biology course and the assessments, but for more details, you'll want to look at the Exam Specifications. With a new Study Design comes new exam specifications so make sure you've read them and are fully aware of the changes.

The previous exams, for example, counted towards 60% of the VCE Biology Study Score, but the current Study Design only gives the exam a weighting of 50% in favour of a greater weighting for coursework for Unit 3 and Unit 4.

The end-of-year exam for VCE Biology covers Units 3 and 4. This includes:

  • Unit 3: How do cells maintain life?
    • Area of Study 1: What is the role of nucleic acids and proteins in maintaining life?
    • Area of Study 2: How are biochemical pathways regulated?
  • Unit 4: How does life change and respond to challenges?
    • Area of Study 1: How do organisms respond to pathogens?
    • Area of Study 2: How are species related over time?
    • Area of Study 3: How is scientific inquiry used to investigate cellular processes and/or biological change?

Work Towards Doing Full Exam Practice

In the early stages of your revision, we wouldn't recommend sitting down for nearly 3 hours and doing a full past paper.

For one, you mightn't even have covered everything you need to know in your classes at school. Doing a full VCE Biology exam would not only show you lots of topics that you haven't covered yet, but it'll just provide you with unnecessary stress at all the questions you don't know the answers to.

It's much better to start with sample questions and parts of the exam that you've already covered in your classes or have revised first. You can always split past papers into parts and do them in several sittings.

There are even resources to help you put together your own sample exams on particular topics so you can always put together a custom exam featuring the topics and concepts that you've already studied.

Use Past Papers as Training for Exam Technique

Past papers and sample papers aren't just a great way to test your knowledge of the questions that you'll get on your end-of-year exam, they're also an excellent way to hone your exam technique.

50% of your Study Score for VCE Biology hinges on the exam so you must perform to the best of your ability on the day. While this isn't a particularly fair way to test your knowledge after 2 years of studying VCE Biology, exams still remain one of the best ways to standardise tests for large groups of students across the state so you're stuck with them.

The reduce your chances of having a bad day on the exam, you need to study the topics that the exam will test you on, but also practise exams so that you manage your time appropriately, know exactly what kinds of answers examiners are looking for, and reduce the risk of any surprises on the day of the exam.

Your exam technique should also extend to how much time you spend on each question, how you manage your time across different sections (they're weighted differently, after all), and getting into the habit of focusing for longer periods as you'll have to do the same in your exam.

Schedule Your Practice Papers

You'll know the exact date and time of your end-of-year exam so you should also schedule when you do your practice papers.

Get into the habit of telling yourself when your "practice exams" are and sitting down to them, ensuring that you'll have no distractions, and emulating the exam conditions as closely as you can when you do past papers.

Admittedly, a room in your home won't be exactly the same as where you'll take your end-of-year exam, but it can help to set it up with a desk or table, remove as many distractions as you can, and let family members know that you're doing a practice exam and that they shouldn't distract you or enter the room.

Get Help with Practice Papers from Private Tutors

If you're struggling to organise your revision or find practice papers, look for help from a private VCE Biology tutor.

There are qualified and experienced tutors all over the state and they can help you with exam technique, doing past papers, and revising for your VCE Biology end-of-year exam.

There are tutors for all levels and budgets so be sure to check a few out before trying the ones that are likely to be the best fit for you.

Good luck!
