There's a lot you need to learn for VCE Biology. For some students, the education they receive in school mightn't be enough to get them the study score they feel that they deserve.

In this case, it might be worth talking to the school about what can be done. Some may recommend that the student's parents sit down with them outside of school and help them with their studies.

However, not every parent has the time or the expertise to help their child with their studies, especially when it comes to something quite specialised like biology. In this instance, it may be better and wiser to enlist the help of a private biology tutor.

Can a Private Biology Tutor Help Me Study?

Private tutors can be hired for many reasons. Some will focus on teaching students a particular subject whilst others may show students the most effective ways to study.

Generally, most tutoring will be a mix of both with tutors finding the ideal balance between guiding a student as they learn and providing them with the tools they need to do their best.

How a Private Tutor Helps VCE Biology Students

In the very first session with a student, a tutor will likely try to evaluate where the student struggles, the kind of student they are, and how they could help them.

In your typical class at school, there are several other students and the teacher rarely has the time to give each student the attention they deserve. Similarly, the teacher can't tailor their lessons to each individual student so a lot of compromises have to be made.

While it can be very easy to blame the teacher when a student struggles, it's sometimes just an issue with the system of teaching several students at once. The teacher has to make each of their lessons as useful as they can to as many of their students and this means that certain students mightn't enjoy the full benefits of their teaching.

Whether it's a student falling behind or a gifted student feeling the pace of the lessons is too slow, there's not much your average teacher can do without reducing class sizes or being provided with more time and resources to help their students. Unfortunately, this isn't something that can be done on a student-by-student basis in your typical school classroom.

Private tutors, on the other hand, have the benefit of working with smaller groups and having much greater freedom to teach in the ways that they feel would be most beneficial for their students.

Let's see exactly how students can benefit from working with private tutors.

A Better Relationship with Learning

A private tutor can spend more time making learning fun or beneficial. Once a student starts enjoying learning, they start learning much more.

It can also help students to see that they're making progress in biology, too. Getting the right answer or just understanding tricky topics can really motivate students and every subject is far more enjoyable when you understand it.

Tutors can work with students on developing the relationship they have with learning to make them more engaged with their school lessons, too!

Become an Independent Learner

Tutors shouldn't really be looking to permanently each any student and, ultimately, they should be working to provide students with the skills they need to be able to learn effectively without the tutor there.

In addition to teaching their students about biology, VCE Biology tutors should also be providing them with the skills to study biology effectively outside of their private tutorials.

Challenge Gifted Students

Tutoring isn't only for struggling students and tutors can help keep gifted students interested in their biology lessons by taking their lessons further.

For students who find VCE Biology too simple or boring, they can work with tutors to satisfy their interest in biology and go beyond the curriculum and the VCE Study Design.

Boredom can very quickly make a good student lose interest in a subject they were once passionate about so it can be really useful to have a private tutor there to remind them why they love the subject by taking their learning even further.

Help Struggling Students Catch Up

Tutors are also there to help struggling students catch up with the rest of their class. In a lot of cases, students only fall behind because they need more time on a certain topic, they've missed some lessons, or the lessons haven't been taught in a way that works for them.

A tutor can work with students to show them topics and concepts in a different way. There are as many different ways to teach as there are students and sometimes, all it takes is a new approach to help a student understand.

For some students, VCE Biology can be quite difficult but tutoring can help make it easier.

Improved Academic Performance

Whether a student is struggling or ahead of their peers, the main reason to work with a tutor is to improve their current academic performance.

By spending extra time working with a private VCE biology tutor, any kind of student can get better results in assessments and exams than they would without a private tutor.

Learn in a Comfortable and Safe Environment

Some students don't get the most out of their classes at school because they're shy, nervous about getting the wrong answer, or are in a disruptive environment with other students who mightn't be as engaged with the learning process as they are.

With private tutors and one-on-one tutoring sessions, in particular, students should feel comfortable asking questions, raising issues when they don't understand something, and fully engaging with the learning process so that they can study VCE Biology as effectively as possible.

Tailored Learning Experience

We've already alluded to it, but private tutors tailor the learning experience to their students. In school, students are subjected to the one-size-fits-all approach that will get the best overall results for the class, but in private tutoring sessions, they can enjoy educational activities that were planned with them in mind.

Tutors Are Specialists in Their Subject

Whether you get a tutor for biology, VCE Biology, or study skills, you'll be paying to enjoy the benefits of an expert.

Generally, it makes sense to find tutors who are experts in not just the subject, but the exam as well. It's all well and good learning from an expert in biology, but if you don't learn how to do well on the exam, all that expertise may go to waste.

Tutors can help you find the right VCE Biology past papers and other useful resources, too!

What Are the Disadvantages of Working with a Private Tutor?

Obviously, we think tutors are great, but for the purpose of fairness, we should highlight some of the disadvantages of private tutoring.

Cost

Unfortunately, private tutoring isn't free and while there are tutors for all levels and budgets, it's still a cost that you have to consider and the very best tutors naturally come at a higher price than those with fewer qualifications or less experience.

In tutoring, you get what you pay for and if you can't afford the best, you'll unlikely be able to get the best. However, that doesn't mean that a cheaper tutor isn't worth it, it just means that the results you get from them mightn't be the same as you'd get from some of the most expensive tutors.

Tutoring Can Feel Like Punishment

For kids and teenagers, being told that they're going to have to give up some of their time outside of school to work with a private tutor can sometimes feel like an insult or a punishment.

Students must understand that the tutor is there to help them get the best possible results they can in their VCE Biology exam. If you're looking for a tutor for your children, it's probably a good idea to talk to them about getting a tutor and the reasons for it rather than surprising them with a private tutor and running the risk of them misunderstanding why they have to work with a tutor.

Working with the Wrong Tutor

Every student is different so even a tutor with glowing reviews and a lot of experience might still be wrong for a particular student.

It's much better to change tutors if they're not working and look for a tutor that's a better fit than wasting time and money.

Is Private Tutoring Worth It?

For us, private tutoring is definitely worth it if you take the time to find the right tutors at the right price.

Students of any level can improve their academic performance through tailored tuition and if they're serious about improving their VCE Biology results or looking to go to university and ultimately work in a career related to biology, they must get the best Study Score they can!
