VCE Maths Methods can be a strong choice if you are comfortable with algebra, enjoy problem-solving, and are prepared to practise consistently throughout the year. It may also be useful if you are considering university courses where Mathematical Methods is listed as a prerequisite.⁵ Before choosing it, check the requirements for the courses you are interested in rather than assuming every STEM, commerce, or health course asks for the same maths.⁶ If you are choosing Methods only because of scaling, it may not be the best fit.

Exam 1 and Exam 2 Need Different Practice

The Maths Methods exam structure rewards two different kinds of preparation. VTAC explains the ATAR as a rank used for tertiary selection, so scaling should be understood as part of the broader ATAR process.⁷ Don't use this to choose maths subjects. Instead, think about your strengths and weaknesses, as well as your career ambitions.

Scaling Is Not a Shortcut

Maths Methods often scales up, but scaling is not the same as free ATAR points. VTAC uses scaling to compare results fairly across different VCE studies.⁴ Your final benefit still depends on how well you perform in the subject compared with other students. Choose Methods because it fits your strengths, goals, and prerequisites, not just because previous scaling reports look appealing.

You can review the scaling data from the VTAC process. This should be used for context, not to make a decision. Remember that the scaling process can't be used to predict what students will be given.
