There's a range of ways that learners can go about learning new languages like Hindi, from using apps or online resources for self-study, to completing a certificate at university. All of these processes have their own advantages and disadvantages, as well as their own costs.

For example, while using apps like Duolingo for beginner vocabulary and grammar or to start understanding the Devanagri script usually costs next to nothing (or is even free), students need to be extremely self-motivated and disciplined to be able to move through the levels.

Some might prefer to learn by doing- travelling around Indian territories and learning words and phrases as they go. While this is sure to be a wonderful experience, it definitely won't be a cheap way to learn.

Another downside is that, as they travel, people will start to understand that different languages like Urdu or dialects are spoken across different territories. You'll find differences between the script and alphabet, pronunciation and more.

While this is great for learning about the range of people and cultures across India, it's not quite the best way to learn how to speak the Hindi language or write in the Devanagari script and alphabet.

The fact is that, for most people, one of the best ways to go about their study and practice of a new language is through a good mix of learning tools, of which classes with an experienced teacher are key.

For many people who are at the first step of their Hindi learning journey, the idea of paying for classes, especially private ones, for the next few years is a little bit worrying. Before deciding to pay for classes, it's helpful to think about how serious you want each lesson to be.

This helpful guide will look at the cost of each of the different ways students can learn, understand and practice Hindi.

Before we continue, it's important that people understand that you get what you pay for and that you'll never be able to get a decent education in languages without spending a little bit of money, especially if you're a beginner level student.

So without further ado, let's see what you can expect to pay for each type of course and class for the language of India...

Let's go

Group Hindi Classes at Language Centres

Lessons for beginners will start by teaching the Devanagari script as well as the pronunciation of consonants and vowels in the Indian language of Hindi. The next step will be building vocabulary word by word. They may also cover very basic grammar rules and speaking.

Each lesson will generally help build on a good range of skills, with audio materials for listening practice and contemporary materials to read.

In each city in Australia students can find a small selection of classes for both adults and children for beginners to advanced-level students. Group classes are generally run by a language school or other types of education centres.

Costs will vary based on many factors, from the hours included in the course to the number of students in the class. Here's a roundup of some of the most popular courses in different Australian cities:

Centre for Adult Education, Melbourne

This centre is a popular option for adults wanting to learn languages like Hindi and Urdu and offers mostly beginner-level courses for groups of usually around 10 students. Course duration varies, but they usually run for about 18-20 hours with 2 hours of teaching per week.

CAE Hindi courses currently sit at around $35o for 18 hours of teaching, plus the cost of materials like textbooks (usually minimal).

Sydney Langauge Solutions, Sydney

This is another school that mainly offers lower-level courses for groups, for adults and children. Courses at this centre generally run for about 10 weeks, with 2-hour lessons every week. The fee of $330 for 20 hours of teaching also includes free training materials.

Topics that are covered in Hindi 1 include learning helpful phrases for things like giving basic personal information, telling the time. Hindi 2 allows students to expand their vocabulary with more complex phrases and help with basic sentence structure.

Hindi Samaj, Western Australia

Hindi Samaj is one of the oldest language schools in Perth currently teaching the Indian language. While the school mostly focuses on classes for school-aged kids that feature fun and play, they also offer lessons for adult learners at a range of levels.

The basic fee is $75 per term, but there are usually some extra fees for adults that can vary based on demand. One great feature of this school is that they organise plenty of cultural events, from reading competitions to musical events.

ANU Centre for Continuing Education, Canberra

A popular option in Australia's capital, CCE offers adult courses mainly for beginners, with both face to face and online versions available. While prices for 2022 have not been released yet, language courses generally cost around $360 for an 18-hour program, 2 hours per lesson.

Like other beginner programs, CCE gives special attention to challenging aspects of Hindi, like learning the Devanagari script as well as basic grammar and phrases for everyday conversations.

So, we've seen that the average cost for a group Hindi class sits around $18-$20 an hour, which is probably the cheapest students can find while being guaranteed a professional and qualified teacher, most likely a native speaker.

Hindi Degrees in Australia

For some English-speaking students, learning the basic vocabulary and grammar needed to have everyday conversations in the Indian language isn't quite enough to help them reach their goals.

If you're looking to work or study in India, or simply want to be able to read and write Devanagari like a native speaker, further study is definitely required.

Unfortunately, there aren't so many options for Australian students looking for standalone further education in Hindi. While Hindi is often available as a language elective for degrees in Arts, Asian Studies, International Politics and more, few universities offer full language degrees.

In saying this, one great option to consider is the Diploma of Languages offered by ANU in Canberra, which is also offered in an online version. To apply, students need to be currently studying or have completed a Bachelor's degree.

The course lasts for one year of full-time study and students can study step by step until reaching advanced courses. While not listed on the ANU website, Diploma of Language fees generally reaches around $5000-$6000 per year.

Average Cost for Private Classes

Tutoring isn't always the most expensive option

The last type of study for English-speaking students looking to speak, write and read Hindi is tutoring with a private teacher. Some people may automatically assume that this type of individual help would be the most expensive version, but that's not necessarily true.

Prices for private tutoring vary based on so many factors that you can find a range of prices from $15 to $80 an hour or even more. The good news is that the average price of a private session in Australia is about $23 an hour.

So why can prices vary so much from teacher to teacher? Here's a helpful list of factors that speak to these differences:

  • Teaching Qualifications: Not every tutor you come across online has a teaching degree, which will affect the cost of their time. Someone who has studied teaching methods and knows how to help pupils will be more effective, but also charge more.
  • Teaching Experience: Besides qualifications, the years of experience a tutor has can affect lesson prices. A tutor who has spent years honing their skills can help you learn more quickly and comprehensively.
  • Class Type: Remember that you're not only paying the tutor for the time they spent with you in lessons but also the time spent preparing. The less preparation they have to do, the less they'll charge. A Hindi conversation class to practice spoken skills like fluency and pronunciation costs less than in-depth grammar instruction.
  • Location and Travel: Some tutors will add an extra fee if they have to travel to reach their pupils, especially if they're far away. Others may reduce fees for online lessons.

Superprof is a great resource where you can find all types of tutors who charge a range of fees for their services. When making your decision, think about your goals and what qualities you need in a teacher to help you achieve them.

If you simply want to practice speaking and gain fluency, you probably don't need a teacher with a Master's degree in education. However, if you need to complete exams in Hindi, a very experienced teacher will probably be the most effective.
