About Harry

I’m an 18-year-old part-time musician with Honours in Grade 8 Comprehensive Practical Piano and am preparing to achieve the AMEB Licentiate Diploma in Music next year. I have been accepted into Berklee College of Music with a scholarship and have graduated the International Baccalaureate with a 7/7 in Music Higher Level and a grade of A on my thesis. With over 14 years of experience, I’m deeply passionate about all aspects of music, from performance and composition to theory and history. I currently perform as a classical and contemporary soloist for a Symphony Orchestra and am the conductor and arts administrator for the Presto Chamber Orchestra, a not-for-profit organization that I co-manage. I’m also a part of the Melbourne Youth Orchestras and perform in my school’s top Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra. I’ve had the privilege of doing masterclasses with the internationally renowned concert pianist Andreas Boyde. Next year, I’m excited to be performing a solo recital at the Melbourne Recital Centre, where I’ll share repertoire from various musical periods and provide an educational introduction to each piece. I love connecting with students of all ages and am committed to making piano learning engaging, comprehensive, and inspiring.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

My favourite instrument is the piano, though my journey with it wasn’t exactly love at first sight. Like many kids from Asian households, I was pushed into lessons at a young age. I honestly hated it and even quit for a while during primary school. But during the COVID-19 lockdown, stuck at home and bored out of my mind, I sat back down at the keys—and something just clicked. For the first time, I played because I wanted to, not because I was told to. That was the moment my passion truly began.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Rachmaninoff. His music is everything—romantic, dramatic, technically dazzling yet emotionally raw. I’m currently working on his Second Piano Concerto, and even though I’ve listened to it a hundred times, it still gives me goosebumps.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or 'riveting' lesson you could personally give to one of your students.

One of the most powerful lessons I give is on storytelling through dynamics and phrasing. It’s where technique meets expression—how to make a simple melody weep, or turn a chord into a question. Teaching students how to go beyond the notes and find their voice within the music is both challenging and deeply rewarding.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I’d have to say the piano. It might seem straightforward at first—just press a key and it makes a sound—but mastering it is a lifelong journey. You’re balancing ten fingers, two feet, complex polyphony, and layers of emotional nuance. And once you add in interpretation of works by composers like Liszt or Rachmaninoff, it becomes both a physical and psychological challenge.
  • What are your keys to success?

Practice smart, stay curious, and be patient with yourself. Progress in music is rarely linear—it’s about embracing the slow grind while keeping the joy alive. I also believe that connecting with others through music, whether performing or teaching, keeps the passion burning.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Chopin, for his lyrical genius and expressive sensitivity—I'd love to ask what emotions lie behind his nocturnes. Rachmaninoff, because his powerful yet melancholic style resonates deeply with me, and I’d love to hear how he approached performance. And John Williams, because I’m also passionate about screen scoring, and it would be surreal to talk about the stories behind his iconic film themes.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your musical journey, or your days at 'music school'.

In one of my early performances, I was so nervous I blanked out mid-piece. But instead of stopping, I improvised in the same key and style until I could rejoin the score. That moment taught me two things: music is more than perfection—it’s about presence. And second, creativity and composure go hand in hand.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I tailor every lesson to the student’s goals and personality. I might break down a difficult passage with a quirky analogy, or rework a piece into a duet to help with rhythm. My aim is to make music approachable, inspiring, and deeply human—because everyone deserves to feel the joy of playing from the heart.
