About Sam
I have a Bachelor's Degree in instrumental music education, which I earned in 2016 - I spent almost four years STRUGGLING through music theory, so I understand what it feels like to need help. Once I received that help, it all started to click, and I was finding interesting connections between musical concepts and ideas all over the place! I then took seven consecutive semesters of music theory, including every advanced music theory class offered at my university, and even went on to present music theory research at the Texas Society for Music Theory (TSMT) Conference.
I also co-founded the music theory club at my university. I am geeky about it. I find the most simple concepts fascinating, and I absolutely LOVE helping other people see just how cool music's structure and form can be. Understanding music theory is like understanding a new language - it has rules that you can follow or break, structures that mimic conversation, and when it gets more complex, it's metaphorical in how it makes us feel.

I take a hands-on, student-centered approach to tutoring. I tailor my lesson plans to each student individually and go at the pace of the student. I use the Socratic Method of questioning to help my students think critically and grow as learners. I foster independence and encourage metacognition to help boost students' confidence in themselves and self-efficacy.
Okay, what does all of that mean? My lessons are unlike other teachers' lessons because I take into account your specific learning style and play to your strengths before we tackle your challenge points. I incorporate many interesting and fun methods that might surprise you!
However long it takes to understand a topic, I will be patient with you and affirming that you are capable of so much more than you feel you are.
I will be asking a lot of open-ended questions that lead you to the answer...but YOU will be the one who comes up with it.
We will examine your thought process while you're learning music theory to help you understand your capabilities, and with time you will learn to accurately assess yourself. You won't even need me. That's the point. Good teachers are always working to become obsolete.
All ages are welcome to come learn music theory and sight-singing/ear training with me!
