• When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  I developed my current interest in science from a very young age, whether it was reading about dinosaurs or watching the blue planet documentary as a kid. I always had an interest in the subject, however the first grade I really began focussing on science as year 10 where my teacher really helped me understand the concepts we were learning. without that extra push I don't know if I would be where I am today.

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  I teach mainly science with superprof it is the subject I am most interested in. within science though I really enjoy tackling subjects related to biology whether that is evolution, genetics or even plant biology. with chemistry I really enjoy teaching how to understand the concepts of organic chemistry this I the subject that I have the most students in, (its a good thing I enjoy teaching it). I would like to work with students on inorganic chemistry as it is a subject I really enjoyed learning at uni. one subject that I do struggle with is physics, its not a subject that I studied in school however I am able to get my head around it a bit more now.

• Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  My year 10 science teacher and my year 11 biology teacher were both people who inspired me to excel in science. both of their approaches were enjoyable and matched with my learning style in a way that hadn't happened before.

• What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  I think the most important qualities a tutor can have is to be empathetic, because without this understanding then you're not able to help your student to succeed in their chosen subject. the only ay to foster a strong relationship with your student and help them learn is to understand why they are struggling and how you can help them to achieve their goals.

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  What I remember most about university and school was being able to work with my peers to learn and understand the challenging concepts, that's what I like about being able to tutor with superprof. I orient my sessions to feel like to friends working on the content together. that way my students know that I'm always on their side.

• What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

  Some of the difficulties I faced when I was learning science, both at uni and school, was the amount of content I had to remember. If there was ever a time that I wasn't interested in a topic it became an absolute slog to get through the content on my own. But being able to work with my peers and tackle the workload together made it much easier.

• Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  My passion is teaching its the thing I enjoy the most out of my weeks. I currently work full time in hospitality however I make as much time as I can alongside that to tutor students. its what I look forward to each day that I have a session and is the most fun to sit down with my students and learn with them!

• What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

  What makes me a Superprof, is that I enjoy everything I do when I tutor. I enjoy the struggle with a new concept, I enjoy being able to impart my knowledge onto someone else and I most enjoy when a student achieves the goal that they set out to achieve. Everything is enjoyable and exciting for me. apart from enjoying the journey I am patient and empathetic and these two qualities really allow me to excel with my students.
