In any type of education, in a range of subjects, whether that is English, maths, chemistry, physics or biology, the most vital education resource available to you are teachers. Hence why it is so important to choose a place of study that gives you access to great teachers and their courses.

Success and failure in school exams is often a result, directly or indirectly, of your relationship with this person – teachers can be motivating, inspiring, intelligent and thoughtful, but also boring, mundane, impatient and prickly (perhaps on a Monday morning) with their students.

They are not entirely responsible for your grades, you are the main person in charge of that, though a good teacher can create the self-drive within yourself to do well at any given subject or course.

In this article, we point you to the best courses available in Sydney for studying accounting, and also where you can find the best accounting teachers!

If you are in secondary school in NSW, taking your HSC and ATAR exams, or in an earlier year, or you need help for a university exam, this article will explore options for anyone studying or looking to study for a diploma in accounting.

In a city like Sydney, you have many choices when it comes to studying opportunities.

For those that don't live in Sydney, you can find other educational articles on the Superprof blog for learning opportunities in the rest of the country, in cities like Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

Why Study Accounting?

If you are still wondering whether you'd like to pursue studies in accounting and eventually get a diploma certificate, we can offer a few reasons why it could be a good choice for you.

Assuming you are interested in accounting with the idea of becoming an accountant, let's start with that. To begin with, forget any previous notions about the role of the accountant in society because times have changed.

Not all accountants are Albert Einstein level math geniuses'. These days, computers do the majority of the maths number crunching for us!

Accountants are hired in all types of industries the world over. Accountants are wanted by everyone, from fashion design companies to film-makers, financial corporations, the real estate industry to laundrettes, everyone has an accountant.

Getting qualified is like a whole new passport! A membership to accounting bodies like the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants can open doors to working in many countries abroad. Particularly major financial capitals such as: New York, London, Tokyo, Zurich, Hong Kong, Chicago or Singapore.

Even though computers are doing much of an accountants job, accountants still have excellent job security.

Whilst new online technologies are rapidly reducing the hours at a desk making calculations, accountants now have more time to deal with clients and act in financial advisory roles.

What about in HSC, is it a good idea to study accounting?

If accounting and math is something you enjoy and are good at, then definitely it is a wise choice to do accounting in an HSC. Subjects we like are the ones that we perform well in. In terms of career prospects, it is not necessarily a prerequisite to enter accounting degrees in NSW.

If you wish to study accounting at an advanced university level, don't worry if there are other subjects or courses you prefer to do in HSC.

Though it might make your first year at university a little easier. Generally though, after the first year of university everyone is on a level playing field.

Finding the Right Teacher for Accounting Tutoring

Whether you have chosen public accounting, management accounting, business accounting or auditing as your accounting speciality, for any of these subjects, finding a tutor to help develop your studies and career could be of great benefit to you to potentially enter the industry.

That’s just good economics!

It's certainly true that accounting tutoring is available on an online platform like Gumtree, but the tutors there are usually students themselves - the question we can therefore ask is: how effective can a student really be at teaching?

Just because someone is studying their degree in accounting, it doesn't translate to being a good teacher – and it's difficult to tell apart excellent teachers from poor ones on an online platform such as Gumtree.

That is why Superprof has designed a way of linking teachers with students, in which students can read the profiles of teachers to choose one based on their needs.

Profiles include academic and work experience, so they will list any relevant certificate or diploma.  but also teaching methods, hourly rates and location of said teacher.

Moreover, you can read reviews from happy (or not) customers – an excellent indication of the quality of the tutor.

In terms of location, that is agreed upon by teacher and student. It could be done at your home, the teachers home, or a public place such as a park or a cafe, or you could choose to learn accounting online: the profile of each tutor will tell you their availability.

In Sydney alone, we can see that there are 93 tutors listed in the city area, at an average rate per hour of $33 per hour.

However, if you are interested in learning online, the whole world of tutoring is available to you, so you can find even better rates.

And, did you know that most Superprof tutors give their first hour of lessons at no cost?

Whether you work in bookkeeping management or are planning to join those who enjoy lucrative accounting careers as a certified management accountant, learning principles of accounting, accounting and business, or even just taking online accounting courses is sure to get you where you want to be, career-wise.

Should you require assistance with your course curriculum; working on your undergraduate diploma or your Master of Science in accounting, or even the preparation for an important CPA exam, Superprof tutors are available to you.

And, once you have the hang of finance and accounting; gotten some bookkeeping and accounting experience in your locker – made some headway in the professional world.

Who knows? Maybe you can start a business of your own.

Other Accounting Pathways

As you can see, entering the accounting industry is no easy task. You will have to develop different study and work experiences carefully in order to enter the world of bookkeeping management.

Those advanced in their career will tell you that which school or course you did, or which diploma, are all important in today's job market. You will also have to be prepared to pay a handsome fee in order to become an accountant, as a full-time university course can run up to $30,000 a year.

TAFE education is somewhat cheaper but is less advanced and recognised. It is a longer pathway into the profession.

A hot tip is to look up "FNS" in any course search. "FNS" is code for any finanicial based course in the Australian TAFE system. For example FNS40217 is a certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, FNS50920 is Banking Services Management, FNS51820 is Financial Services. So go check out the TAFE system online also!
